That's a neat looking bag you have, what is it?

Great place, too. Wish I was back on the farm again, I miss being able to do a hike like that by just walking out the door.

Sorry, I just caught this post. It is a Frost River large Field Satchel. I scored it on Ebay a year or so ago for $20 I believe. :D

Hey Arne

Yup, took those on Friday morning [19/02/10]. The cloud was starting to well up by mid day. You can get a glimpse in a couple of pics. By 16.00 it was just sheep cloud and showers but by the evening proper rain. It has been raining ever since, still is. They've got a bit of snow up north but nothing fun – too warm, mostly just sleet.

The coat in that one is an old US fishtail parka. Pretty hopeless as a parka although I do like the hood and the pockets. It's nice for loafing and thrashing about in the brambles though. Glad I bailed when I did 'cos it would be a miserable thing to be inside in the wet.

Hey everyone! New guy to the forum here, just wanted to say that I love this thread! Your pictures are all so great.

I thought I would share a few of my pictures from a somewhat recent overnight hike in the snow and rain. There's no such thing as bad camping weather!

-------------------

Here I am at the side of a little highway - the road to the trail wasn't even open! Oh well, that just meant more hiking. If you look very closely you might see a Ka-Bar strapped to my pack. Didn't feel like bringing an expensive knife on this trip, heh.

A little ways in I found this little river and refilled my bottle. The real hike up the mountain would start soon.

Here's some pretty typical terrain on the way up. After a few hours of this, there's a nice little sub alpine lake.

Nearing my destination now...

There's the lake! Looks nice.

It was getting late so I didn't take many more pics. Here's one looking out from my little make shift camp in the cliffs above the cold lake chilled air. I slept in a hammock under a tarp... that was a fun 14 hours of pitch black! The sun went down around 6PM and didn't illuminate this valley until about 9AM.

When the sun finally returned, I took a picture looking towards the lake from my hammock. Looks like I got a bit of snow that night!

Overall, it was a good experience, albeit a bit cold. But I blame that on being ill-prepared. It was a totally last minute trip. But for my first time camping in freezing conditions, I think I did alright! It definately reinforced my love of the local wilderness; BC looks amazing during any season. I feel that I'm fortunate for living here.

Just some woodwork and having a nice fire this Thursday.

Used my Burger Large EXK.

With all the talk of spring lately, I thought I might share a picture that always makes Spring seem a bit closer for me. Took this one quite a few years back when I was in High School on a hike at a local park. It was taken on high speed black and white film, and obviously it got a bit out of focus. It's one of my all-time favorite pictures, though. Have it set as my wallpaper, maybe until I find some more little flowers poking through the leaves.

And a clearer picture of a similar flower

Elephant Seals at Ano Nuevo State Reserve last weekend. There were some big boys still there, even though it's the tail end of the mating season. Lots of pups hanging around the beach. Some of them were quite healthy and are going to make it into the ocean, some will never leave the beach. Fascinating creatures, and we know so little about them still. Pics aren't stellar, as we were respectful of their space. And I wouldn't want one to charge me anyway....:)

The houses on the island in this picture are the remains of the Ano Nuevo Island Light Station. Very interesting stuff. Apparently, it was constructed by the government after ships kept wrecking in the area during and after the gold rush. The station was retired when a sea mark buoy took over its job, and now it's a scientific preserve. The houses belong to the elephant seals and sea lions now. All the doors and windows were removed. Supposedly, a foot or two of decaying biological matter has accumulated in the houses...must be pretty foul smelling.

We were even lucky enough to witness two big boys going at it. Pardon the grainy video, it was taken with a digicam.

We stopped by Half Moon Bay and watched for the 2-3 ft tsunami surge that was supposed to hit the coast (originating from the Chile earthquake). LEO's were clearing beaches, but we didn't see anything out of the norm at the predicted arrival time from our vantage point on the cliff.
