The Sharpening Thread

If I ever get a decent camera, I might do some sharpening videos. Need to get a belt sander that doesn't shock me every five or ten seconds first though.

:D

Alright guys -- so I know everyone raves about the Spyderco Sharpmaker -- but my experience has been mixed. I've sharpened my Kershaw switch blade (minimal success), my Victorinox Swiss Army Knife (Very Successful), a totally dull blade (no success), a kitchen pairing knife (successful), and my Ka'Bar USMC (minimal success). I want to sharpen my Busse knives, but I feel I don't deserve to sharpen them yet since my skills have been inconsistent. I have excellent muscle control and I can keep a consistent angle and sharpening pace. I would need to actually see someone sharpen a convex edge on the Sharpmaker to properly understand -- but more importantly why am I not succeeding with such an "easy" sharpening mechanism??

The sharp maker should really be called the sharp keeper. It basically adds a micro bevel to a knife that is shady sharp to keep it sharp. that is if you are using it as intended. You can always turn the stones flat on the back of the SM and then just free hand sharpen the entire bevel, however you have to know how to free hand before you can do that. I would recommend watching youtube videos on free hand sharpening. even if you don't plan on sharpening that way, it teaches you quite a bit.

Anyone have any experience with the work sharp. .ken onion edition? And if so whats your opinion on it? I'm thinking of getting one.

Just get a harbor freight 1x30. Less money, more motor, more belt options. For the money it is the best motorized sharpener out there IMO.

The worksharp puts a very good edge on a knife. If you are not super careful though you are going to end up remaking the point on your knife.
You really need to practice on some cheap knives.

so i can use an egdepro or wicked edge system and wont be too far off of how it came from the shop?

Assuming you got one with a v edge, yes, you can match the angle and sharpen on those systems. For the larger blades it's a bit easier to use the edge pro since the wicked edge clamps down and you won't have the range to go across the entire blade. That being said the wicked edge is the better system for smaller blades IMO.

I have a lot of experience hand sharpening..about 15 plus years. .and I will be practicing before I move up to my expensive knives. ..I've just never used a grinder to sharpen..so I was a bit hesitant. ..I'm getting one for christmas that's why I was asking.

If you have hand sharpening down you should have no problem transferring over to a grinder. There is a small learning curve but as long as you practice on cheaper knives first. You should be good. Just keep in mind that everything happens much much faster on a grinder.

Thanks for the info def something I need to know about. Are the current ASHBM and TGLB non convex? I thought the former was full flat V and later a hollow grind?

The satin ASHBMLE and the 1 of 300 is convex and the CG is v, the TGLB has a v exept the CF.

My ashbmcg..looks to be pretty convex for a v grind...I guess it was a mistake

I just checked a NMFSHCG that i got a few days ago and the v edge on it is slightly convex, hmmmm Vonvex ??? :p

So since the cg ASHBM is v edge -- I can simply sharpen it on my sharp maker without any special technique? Should I only use the ceramic sticks?
