My mother is a good (strict) Christian woman and would not be caught dead sullying her ears with Elvis - that said, I did get a rare admission many years ago that she thought he had a nice voice. I don't know why but I got a huge kick out of that - she was so sheepish about it.

In any group there's always someone who enjoys raining on the parade.
I'm ecstatic that Bill Howard has elected to do one of these for us, and that we've had the right forum characters to get this accomplished.
I don't care at all about SFOs, but the forum knife is meaningful to me because I like these forums and 78.7% of the folks who participate.
If I give you a big grin, will that raise it to 78.8% ? :D

Didn't Elvis record something like a dozen gospel albums? :D

and for the made in America contingent... Three Mile Island ;)

As Rachel pointed out, you have to count the Made in Japan element too and not just because of Fukushima...plus everywhere else in the world due to the previous insanity of atmospheric testing, spreading the love ;) equality!

Anyway we aint need no stinkin' glow-worm handle :D :D

This thread is heating up all the time, stacking up, ratcheting up, IT CALLS FOR STACKED LEATHER HANDLES! Cool Factor or what? But, on a Barlow they hiss...

I hope it's not Dollar Bill.

That was nice, wasn't it?
Probably why it was the very first Forum Knife I purchased while passing on the previous ones. It felt more like a representation and celebration of the forum, rather than just a chance to grab a hot commodity that nobody else could have.

I love the brand... but absolutely hate the availability and lolliscrambles... enough to keep me away.
So, I'm a little disillusioned as a whole, but still look at them with lust in my eye. :D

The 2020 forum knife was my first experience with the process, admittedly I thought that was how it had gone in the past. Some of the vitriol that's been spewed here has quite honestly surprised me on a forum that is supposed to pride itself on courtesy and decorum. I gave my viper away, and I'm excited about the possibility of getting a forum knife this year, because I love a single clip point pattern. The manufacturer matters little to me. I stumbled across gec looking for a particular blade pattern and then found my way here. I love trying to contribute in a worthy manner and reading the contributions of those that have been around longer and share my enthusiasms...

To be frank, a lot of the heat tends to get generated by the simple fact of whether the proposed knife is a GEC or not. Last year's knife discussion was rather tame by comparison and it was simply because a GEC option was not on the table. (Also, the more options that we have, the more passionate we tend to get (2018 Buck).)

Those of us who are excited about a GEC option get painted in a poor light by those who are disillusioned with the brand - I've never understood why and no one has been able to explain this articulately and without obvious malice. These days, GEC has become a controversial topic and, by default, will extend into our Forum knife discussion as well. Plenty of us are seasoned enough at this point to expect this so it really isn't all that big of deal but it can certainly be off-putting to newer folks.

Ultimately, you either buy the knife or you don't - kind of simple, really.

I think that your point adds to part of what I was saying; that the more people care, the harder it is to keep things civil. A lot of people love GEC, a few people dislike GEC, and a good number of people are discouraged by how GECs have gone from being relatively easy to get without hassle to being a mechanism for mad rushes and profiteering.

I prefer civil, I accept that human nature will often fall short of that, and so I try to interject now and again in the hopes of not alienating the folks who matter most in the annual process--those who are making it possible.

Last year had a great vibe, and I think in part because no one expected it. This year there was more anticipation and clamor, and I think all of the fomentation from the recent GEC madness on the secondary only soured the pot for a GEC forum knife. I am hoping that once the raucous dies down a bit folks who enjoy GEC will be thankful that they can get one without the same scramble that has been the case in the last year or so.
