The upcoming, anticipated, way-too-excited GEC 85's Thread!

Mike if only I had a grinding stone! Unfortunately I'm afraid if I put the knife on a grinding stone I would end up with a very pretty paperweight!! Ahh

I only reserved one this time around but I am very glad I reserved the one I did. Great bone and love the Scandi/Spear, something different.

I literally held the two I own and said to the GF 'Right or left?' She chose left and that's what I'm going with. After its full spa treatment, for its first week of carry.

My canvas micarta with its friends. Great quality on this SFO - makes me want to get out the magnifying glass to see if I can see any fault. Thanks much, Mike.

Man, I am a Huge fan of that clip shape.

Just got mine in from, it's "EDC" condition due to minor imperfections, marked "S" on the secondary blade. First thing I notice when I open the USPS package: the knife is rolling around in the bottom of the box, outside of it's tube. I doubt this is Mike's fault, but rather USPS or a faulty tube cap (it's slightly bent). I believe it is EDC because of the black lines you can see on the shield-side bone.

Now comes the ugly part. I started to sharpen the knife, and after only a couple times open/closing, I notice a chip had formed on the main blade's edge, and a little notch where the blade was hitting the back spring.

I'm not sure what to do. I only have a sharpmaker, so re-profiling it really isn't an option. Any ideas?

Use it like you would anyway and sharpen it as well. After a bit you will have plenty of memories of this knife. One of those memories will be that the blade used to rap the spring and cause a ding.

Just use it and sharpen it as you need it.

Couple ideas, Mike has contact info on his site for apostlep. I think he charges $15 or so..don't recall exact amount. Another option is get a spyderco med ceramic or DMT diamond stone and fix it yourself.

I'm with NJBillK on this. I'm guesstimating that the ding on your blade is somewhere around 1% of the cutting surface and this isn't going to have a noticeable impact on performance. In a couple of months of regular use and sharpening, the ding will disappear.

Yes I sharpened it completely away took about an hour on my sharpmaker and I will have to admit is now razor sharp however after opening and closing a couple of times the picture i posted is the result.. Though it probably will dissapear after a few months of use and sharpening.. I didn't want to take away so much edge that it becomes much thicker behind the edge.. So I sent it back to GEC and let the professionals handle that! Now the wait for the return?

But eventually I will have to grind the kick a bit to keep the tip down when closed, and then it will probably juat hit the spring again. Can I file down the little bump in the spring a bit?

It isn't so close that the tip will be proud. I personally wouldn't want to touch the spring due to not wanting to affect the mechanics.

That being said, if you would feel more comfortable sending it in, feel free. I can understand why some people would send it in due to that issue, even though I personally would not. Mind you, I have no qualms about fixing or modding a knife I plan on keeping.

Ok, so with my stag "EDC", it came with some fairly thick polished stag for a single blade knife. I wanted to thin it down. So after careful work using my orbital sander and finish sanding by hand, I was able to thin it to my liking without grinding off the pins. The center pins were touched but not to the point that they won't hold the covers down. I also used CA (super) glue to fill all the little voids around the stag and liners/bolsters. I also filled in one crack that had a little surface opening.

It is now finished and I couldn't be happier. I'd even have to say it's the nicest 85 that I now own. It probably won't even become the dedicated "EDC" that I intended it to be!
