So this is definitely in the "whatever" category.
I have had a pretty much life-long love for Buck knives, starting with the folding hunter (110) when I was young. In my high school at the time, a lot of the fellows I hung with had a sheath knife of some sort on their belt every day (things were very different in the early 70's.)
I initially carried a Buck 110, and then later a 112 as that was a little smaller and even then I just liked the look of the slightly smaller "Ranger", or 112.
Fast forward to 2015. I am much older, and a lifetime member of the Buck Collectors Club.
Over the years, I have admired the work of one David Yellowhorse, who is one of the penultimate customizers of the Buck 110 and 112, amongst others.
David is of Navajo descent, and he has been producing, from his home in Southern Arizona, beautiful art including buckles, lighters, wall hangings, and of particular import to my story, Buck knives, since the late 1970s.
Nowadays. I am teaching Concealed Carry and Firearms Safety classes in Illinois. I always show my students a few knives, and have several knives laying on a demo table on the second day of class. One of my students came up to me a couple months ago and said something to the effect of "So you like knives, ever heard of David Yellowhorse? He is my father in law!!"
Wow -
So - last weekend I was honored to meet and have dinner with David and some of his local family. David is very down to earth, and he is not only a knife guy, he is a gun guy, car guy and all around friendly guy!
So there it is. I ate dinner and shot the breeze with David Yellowhorse, and established what I am sure will be a long friendship with the man.
I did not take any pictures, since I thought that would be out of line, but I did talk to David about customizing one of my Buck knives.
John will be interested to know that the knife I am having David customize is the Buck 55 that I bought at a gathering at Mokena long ago.
Just a cool story with a knife undertone that only my true "knife buddies" would understand and relate to.....
I will take pictures of the 55 after David has worked his magic on it, and will post them here for sure.
In the interim, here is a picture of David and myself from Blade this past June - David is the fellow with the hat ;^)
