The "Whatever" Thread

Police cars are kept running for several reasons and it is likely departmental policy. Keeping the car running provides power to maintain the vast array of electronics in the vehicle and ensure the officers can respond quickly to an emergency. Most police vehicles have a lockout system that prevents the vehicle from being shifted into gear even though it is running, so theft is not a big concern.

I've heard the "thanks for wasting my tax dollars" comment several times but I've heard the "thanks for your service" comment 10X more. I like the second one better.

It surprised me that 7 of them were on break at the same time. As for quick response time, when I hit the deer several years ago it took them an hour and fifty minutes to respond.

Will is a gigantic county and very spread out. I guess if the call was "I hit a deer" and there were no injuries it could take some time to see a response depending on what else was going on. I'm not exactly sure how many units WCSD would have on a given shift but likely in the 20-30 range.

Very nice, thanks for the pics Jeff.

I've seen those squared off holes in trees over here also, I want to say it's Wood Peckers that peck 'em out, not positive though.

Thanks guys, it was a beautiful afternoon in the woods (no fire though). I believe those holes were made by a Pileated Woodpecker.

Jeff

It seems like I have seen more Pileateds recently then I can ever remember in the past. I always forget what a large bird they are. Sometimes they can give you a spook as they move from tree to tree. Looks like a damn chupacabra leading through the trees.

I had no idea what a Pileated Woodpecker was but I thought the holes were made by a Woodhen. Mark it up as another thing I learned from being here.

I knew what made the holes. I didn't know what the proper name was. They're everywhere in the mountains around here. They are impressive when flying through thick timber. Can be aggravating in the spring when you're hoping to hear a gobble but only the distant echo of the Pileated Woodpecker cutting a hole into a hollow tree.

Goofy birds, all the way around. I couldn't tell you how many hours I've spent listening to their call during deer season. Some of the ones I've seen are pretty plump little bastards. It is amazing they are able to fly at all.:D

For anyone unfamiliar.

Hey guys. Its been awhile since I seen these parts. Life has a way of pulling you whichever direction it wants you to go.
The direction ive been is dealing with wild hogs in my woods. They have completely destroyed about 2 acres of my yard. I set a trap a couple of weeks ago and Sunday was the big night.
I caught 8, count 'em, 8 hogs in one trap! It was two females with six little ones. I still think they are more out there because I don't see just two females doing all the damage that was caused.
My uncle help me dispatch the catch and we split them up equally. He took a female and three little and I took the same.

John, if this pic is too graphic let me know and ill remove it.

Here is a pic of the haul.
