Thinking about open-carrying a dagger

I had a CT scan today for my back; wore my Syderco Tatanka, even into the machine (so now it's got more radioactive goodness :D).

If I'd been open-carrying a dagger, I probably would have gotten unwanted and annoying attention (and cops), rather than another addition to my list of "hospital knives."

You are safer from those outlier situations where its use is appropriate.

Let me try this a slightly different way. On balance, if one is affirmatively thinking of his knife as a weapon, that mindset is more likely to cause trouble than to prevent it. That is not the same as saying that a knife can never be appropriately used for self-defense or that they shouldn't be carried. (It'd be unlikely that I'd be here if I didn't often carry a knife).

I'm not trying to argue or say what you are saying is not valid. What you are saying is true, but that doesn't mean that what others are saying can't be true at the same time.

I definitely agree that a person who is just beginning to carry a knife, or any weapon for that matter, defensively is more likely to get themselves into trouble.

Once you carry a weapon defensively every day though that mindset fades.

I was always told that when confronted with stress or dangerous situations humans generally tend to do two things.

1. Freeze up

or

2. Fall back on training.

This is true that's why I'm not a fan of lots of laws that are popular here because of training.

After reading this thread, I've come to the conclusion that I am in fact, Obi Wan Kenobi and I can just Jedi mindrape people into not attacking me. Because, somehow, I've managed to work in really bad neighborhoods, and have never once needed to defend myself against the hordes of evil Mad Max ruffians that seem to attack peole everywhere else.

Me too but I attribute it to either looking or being broke :D

I asked the question. Is a knife a weapon if used in self defense. Another member kept saying Yes its a weapon when used in self defense. If you read that thread I kept saying it is not. The point I was trying to make is A person who picks up anything with the intent to use a knife in this example to use it as a means of intimidation and potentialy injure/kill someone in the process of robbery or what ever. This person using the knife as a weapon and had/has used this to go out into the world to cause trobble. Thats a WEAPON. A person who carries the same knife for the sole perpouse of self defense. Should it really be called a weapon. As this person has/had no plans on ever using it. I dont want to start that convo again, just throwing it out there. I believe its always better to have and never use it as oppossed to needing it once and not having it. Now as EDC what does that mean? Every Day Carry. weather or not you use it isnt important. So EDCing a dagger for personal protection is for me a no brainer. I mean how many people EDC a firearm? Do these people use it everyday? All the questions and opinions about EDCing a dagger should hold same to fire arms, but for some reason on this forum that does not seem to be true. Not saying its a bad thing or good. Just an observation

as for open carry vs concelled. I would prefer to carry conceled. Why do we need to let every one know we have a weapon? Those who see it and have intent to harm you may go and get something bigger and better. Why not let everyone carry concelled? I would say that people have told me they were going to assault me but decided not to because they seen the pistol in my holster under my armpit. they didnt notice until they were right up on me. Why they told me this i dont know. All i was doing was finishing a smoke before i walked into the 711. I hadnt seen those people before never said anything to them nothing. They were ready to jump me. in the process and one of them got a glemse of the 1911 i was packing. I think it was race/gang related. Im not a gang member, but they were. So they aborted i guess. so what ever that is worth

So we know where the threats lie.

Believe it or not I don't have faith in your ability to respond to a threat no matter what BillyBob the sheriff has to say. If you're going to carry I'd rather you open carry so I know who the threats are in my attempt to escape.

So anyone carring a "weapon" is a threat? I am no threat to anyone, other than some one trying to causing me harm. I dont care who carries what, concelled or not as long as it dosnt envolve me. When I lived in AZ people from Cali would freak out about open carry. A women in a convientent store called the cops on me for having a holstered gun. I was paying for my gas and getting smokes when the officers came in the store guns drawn looking for the "threat". When all said and done. The officer said it was pretty common for that situation. I believe AZ has abbolished the need for a CCW for reason like that. Me and the clerk were looking around for the "guy with a gun" i didnt know it was me, i dont think the clerk did either. I remember the officer told me to cover it up
Here in WA it is an open carry. I seen the same thing happen to an older guy at a grocery store. He wasnt brandishing it or anything just on his hip. The Seattle PD came busting in to "take charge of the situation" Had the dude just pulled his shirt over it then that would have never happened

WA you can get a CCW all you need to do is pay $50 bucks for a background check. Never do you have to prove you can operate it safley i get where you are coming from. I just feel other people would be better off not seeing you carry it. To ease there minds i guess. I dont feel an attacker need to know you have a weapon. If they get hurt or killed for attacking you for whaterever reason then they got what they deserved. I think its called Karma

The second you respond to a threat that cases you harm you are yet another threat to me and mine. It went from one moron with a gun to two morons with a gun, so yes anyone carrying a weapon is a threat.

Anyone carrying a weapon is definitely atleast a potential threat.

Even if we edc a knife for self defense and never use it, it is still a weapon, a defensive weapon.

Wouldn't you prefer if noone carried at all then?

How's this. I'd rather you not carry at all so I don't have to feel threatened.

What you 'prefer' someone do doesn't really matter in real life. You carry open if you like, I'll carry concealed.

I'm sure the biggest threats come from people who aren't brandishing, historically, regardless.

They should just make assault, robbery and murder illegal. o_O

I suppose the police shouldn't have them either, eh? I've met some pretty dumb police officers.

Should I assume that you shouldn't defend you or your family in public need be, because you might be the second "moron with a gun?"

Please.

Cops carry open so I know where the threat is so what's your point?

Yeah i get where you guys are coming from. Two people shooting at each other. I think most people seeing some one with any weapon sees them as a potential threat. I say concelled carry would ease the minds of everyone around. I carry a fixed blade everyday, for every other reason than SD. I carry open for ease of access and well its common around here. If I were in Seattle even tho its legal people would be shitting themselves at the sight of it

My point is that you don't get to dictate who carry weapons and how, hell, not even the police do, really. Prepare accordingly and expect the worst. You can fantasy-land this all you like, but criminals are going to carry concealed. I don't like it either, but it is what is is. If your gonna carry lawfully I don't see why anyone in their right mind would want to advertise that they are armed, either.

Edit: Off duty cops generally carry concealed.

I can hang with one dumb SOB carrying a gun when you add one or two more dumb SOB's is when I get concerned.

I don't get to dictate how many dumb SOB's carry a gun but I'd prefer them carry open like cops do so I know how many threats I need to deal with to GTFO of any situation.
