This just in ~ from España • The Navajas of ArtesaniaHerreros

Well it's arrived from Spain...
"Combined slip joint folding knife American buffalo and deer stag with plaited brass cord."
A little Christmas present to myself. I know some others here ( Prester John Prester John ) are thinking about ordering from ArtesaniaHerreros ArtesaniaHerreros so I'm happy to share my thoughts.

First off, knife maker Jose' is a pleasure to deal with. His customer service is excellent.
I had some questions about customizing my knife and he was very accommodating.
Anyway, I'm still feeling my way around the new knife and will write more details later (also traveling for the holiday) but she's a beauty.
Rock solid lockup; no blade play. Really nice!

I asked for a lanyard hole and received copper cord instead of brass (he had this knife in stock and I love copper).
Thanks Jose' for a very beautiful and unique knife !!

Concerning your inquiry, the blade is made on 440c :) I always use 440c; but I can do custom blade made out 1.4116; 12c27 or böhler n695 !

Let me take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas! I wish for you and your family the best and a new good year of blades :D

José, thanks for specifying that the steel is 440c.
As I learn/use my new knife more, I am curious about the lock.
Your website says it is a piston type. Can you explain how this works?
I have not encountered it before.
To those wondering, there is no lever or button to press. The slipjoint blade opens with strong pressure, probably a 7-8, and is extended firmly in place with zero play in any direction. To close, you just firmly close it like a regular slipjoint.
The blade is never truly locked, but is held open with good force, more than a regular slipjoint (if that makes sense).
At any rate, perhaps you can explain it José. At least the "piston" referenced in your website description.
I will wait on posting more pictures until I return from my holiday travels.

Navaja de pistón = slipjoint.

Dear Don,

As Llasi pointed out, a piston folding knife is slipjoint folder, on Spain they are known as "navajas de pistón" since the "pistón" (backspring) biases the blade towards the open or closed position. It is similar to the penny folder (those folding knives without any blocking system) since they both do not have any locking mechanism other than friction, but in contract to penny folding knives the slipjoint or piston locks the blade in position.

There is no difference between a piston and a slipjoint, however, I like to make mine extra tight, so if you want to close it you need to make more strenght than a regular slipjoint. The problem with mechanized slipjoint are they are cut by laser and mounted together by an operator, they don't actually adjust the blade to each handle, each handle is identicall as well as the blades, and since there is one human that has to mount thousands of them at one time they don't really make the effort of tighten they all.

I guess this is a matter of tastes, I like the tight and robust folding knives and so I try to make mine that way.

You shouldn't have any problem with it (at least for now :P) but if you have any inquiry about the folding knife do not hesitate to reach me back as much as needed!

Have a Merry Christmas Pinemoon and Llasi :)

Thanks for explaining Jose' & Llasi.
My international knife vocabulary is improving!
The blade in its open position is very stout. Probably the most stout slipjoint I have encountered. Yet the pull is not a nailbreaker. I think I may have misrepresented the pull earlier at 7-8. It's really more like a 5-6.
I'm back home now and just cleaned and oiled the knives pivot. This has improved it even further.
I noticed there is a small notch on the rear of the blade tang. This must mate with the backspring and make it feel so stout when opened. Yet being a slipjoint, there is no lever to release, etc. A neat design.

Thanks again, Jose' !

Looking forward to seeing the knives of others who placed orders with Herreros!

I hear we could be seeing another ArtesaniaHerreros knife soon here on BF!!!

Hint hint Prester John Prester John :D

Looking forward to it.

I'm one of those guys who've tracked down the mailman midday for a package. Always for a knife. The first time I kinda freaked him out, but he knows me now :thumbsup:;)
