This just in ~ from España • The Navajas of ArtesaniaHerreros

Well, I just received my navaja (folding knife) from ArtesaniaHerreros ArtesaniaHerreros in Spain last night. I have been carrying it all day, and I am impressed. RayseM RayseM started this thread on October 17, 2018, but I do not think I saw it. I saw a post around the end of October by the artisan José Herreros. He had posted his first blog entry from his website here on BladeForums about that time, and the knives he makes are amazing. I knew I had to buy one -- or more. This is how it looks:

The handle is a polished deer stag antler point. Just look at those lines. What a beauty!
A few more specs:
Steel: 440C
Blade length: 3.34"
Blade width: .1"
Length closed: 4.13"
Length opened: 7.58"
The bolster on this one is brass, and there are some nickel silver inlays. I believe the spring and palanquilla are stainless steel. There are no liners, and this knife is very light. Even though it is about the size of a trapper, it is much lighter, and I did not have any trouble carrying it my pocket. Hardly noticed it was there. And the blade came very sharp!
Here is a picture with a trapper for comparison:

The blade has a notch in it and locks in place when fully opened. To close, just lift the palanquilla about 90 degrees to release, and close.

I think the artistry is superb, and this will not be the last knife I buy from José Antonio Herreros.

Buenas noches y vayan con Dios.

Bravo!
A beautiful piece. And a unique piece.
Thanks for sharing the news with us.
I love the sweep on that clip-point blade. Your pictures are very nice. It must've been fun to carry this around today.
Cuchillo precioso!
Well done ArtesaniaHerreros ArtesaniaHerreros !!

Prester John Prester John - have you taken this beauty out for some slicing or is it still too busy posing for glamor shots? :)
Curious if you've given it some pocket time.

You took some spectacular photos of it Vince.

... and then, what is it about José's Navajas that they just look so great standing?

Enjoy, Ray

Thanks for the compliment. It has been in my pocket since I received it. I will carry it often, I am sure. You have a lovely specimen as well, as done Pinemoon Pinemoon . Hope to see others on this thread.

I have just noticed that Vicent posted his folder here as well! I am quite a disaster with the computer so please, let me apologize if I miss some tags and post here and there, if I see them I answer them.

I just wanted to thank you Vicent and you all for being continuosly supporting me! Thanks a lot for giving me the opportunity of showing my folding knives here and there, and more than that for trusting me as an artisan.

Thanks a lot guys!

PS: Really quick question guys, what would be the right english word to name an artesano? Artisan or craftsman? What is the difference? (now you say that they are synonism hahaa)

ArtesaniaHerreros ArtesaniaHerreros - José - I think we would use both words interchangeably though more correctly you are an ARTISAN. You are an expert in a skilled trade working with your hands. The word ARTISAN - to my mind also suggests that there is art and intricacy involved with your skill.

On the other hand CRAFTSMAN - also refers to someone skillful in their handwork but I think (these days in particular) is more likely referring to less complex work than that of an ARTISAN. They are both accurate and yes - synonyms. I call myself a craftsman (as a wood furniture builder) who exhibits occasional ARTISAN flourishes.

Does that explain?

Ray

I think Ray and John are correct in their definitions. You are an artisan, Jose'.
You are also a craftsman, but artisan is more appropriate for your level of work.

Another word that comes to mind when describing you is bladesmith. It would help in narrowing the focus of your craft.

Perhaps Artisanal Bladesmith would be the ideal English term you are looking for ??

I thought I'd post some pics of my beautiful piston navaja (slipjoint folder) for those just discovering your work.

Presenting the gorgeous work of artisanal bladesmith ArtesaniaHerreros ArtesaniaHerreros :
