Three Weapons and You're On Your Own

The 527 FS ( mannlicher ) is drop dead gorgeous and can be had in 223. I got one and then had to sell it at a big loss before the scope rings came in. It was still virginal - unfired!!!!

( Sobs, wipes tears from the corners of his eyes. Sorry boys, sometimes I get emotional like that without warning. Please forgive me? )

Those Springfield Sog's seem to be catching on.

The standard M1-A is what? 22 inches I think? Then they just came out with the "Scout" version that is 18" that I was looking at as a good compromise. Now I see that they have this "Socom 16" with only a 16 inch barrel that is ported. I don't know. With that short barrel and that round it seems to be it's going to be a lot louder and have much lower muzzle velocity to boot.

Anyone have any experience with these new models? I take it they will accept the standard M1-A mags? I was talking to my gun dealer who I bought my Bushmaster AR and Garand from, and he said he could make me a good deal on this 16" barrel version only, as he has several in stock, but I'm not sure about it. My AR is also 16", but I know from experience that out to 200 yards it shoots just like a 20" barrel, and that's about my limit with that rifle anyway. I suspect with the heavier .308 it will be more pronounced, esp. as you are losing 6 inches off of the standard barrel length.

Any info is appreciated!

Very nice! Have you noticed that many of the walnut stocks advertised now are Turkish walnut? Has our own domestic supply dried up that much? I recently bought a 12 ga. coach gun through the NRA foundation that was advertised as having Turkish walnut, and it is some of the prettiest wood I have ever seen. Beautiful figure to it.

Norm, I think that it is two fold. Good walnut in the US is a little harder to come by, but I think it is mostly that we are seeing a lot more eastern european guns (and quite a few turkish guns) coming to our shores. Where was your coach gun made, out of curiosity?

I think those 16" carbines look neat, and would be handy, but now it isn't a battle rifle in my book. I think a 20" is about as short as I would want unless the focus of my work was CQC.

Munk, don't worry ~ I was being facetious. I don't truly want what I said anymore than you do :footinmou :barf: :D

I have been looking at the czech made CZ 527 and the yugoslavian made Charles Daly mini mausers lately. One thing I like about the CD's is the flush mounted magazine, but I prefer the rest of the CZ's styling.

Oh, the little sporters. Yeah, I've had my eye on them for a long time. We've come a long way from when the Sako vixen was the only soviet short bolt- and hard to find.

Norm, yes, you will lose some off the round. There are models to estimate how much but because it's a semi auto that's kind of out the window, and they are estimates only. They're using good barrels, and the 308 is an efficient round.
I'm quite happy with my full size. Depending upon how much, if I didn't have a M1a, I'd be tempted.

If they're not thrown on the top of my desk all hell breaks out and a massive search begins.

But loosing the checkbook is even more paranoic.

The gun is the Liberty II 12 ga. Coach Gun, imported by K.B.I., and made by Astra in Spain. I am a picky SOB and the work looks flawless to me. Exposed hammers and a 20" barrel. All color-case hardened metal work. They also had a very few 24" models available, but I liked the looks and the portability of the shorter gun. At 6.75 lbs. it kicks like a little bas^%$d, but it's not too bad after a while, and you get used to it. I could put a rubber recoil pad on it, but that would kinda screw up the old west look to it. I'll wait it out for now. Of course the load makes a big difference and you could probably shoot #7 1/2 target loads through it all day without it bothering you.

Regards,

Norm

Yep, that's the guy. Good price on that one too, as mine was just a bit more new. I was thinking about getting into Cowboy action shooting someday, and this would be good for that, but mostly liked it as a defensive weapon that could be easily handled.

Jeff Cooper says that next to his 1911 the gun he grabs at night is a 12 ga. coach gun with exposed hammers, with a few extra rounds strapped onto the stock. Does have a kind of old-fashioned intimidation factor to it!

Norm

I can't get past the transfer bar safeties. But I always wanted a double with exposed hammers too.

Here's mine http://www.eaacorp.com/firearms/longguns/sidebyside/cowboy/izh43kd.shtml

But I just found out some news.

1) Baikal:
On November 6, 2004 we let the cat out of the bag, so to speak. All of the guns we had been importing from Baikal of Russia (IZH models), will now be sold under the Spartan by Remington” name brand. We will continue to perform warranty work on the Baikal line. Spartan by Remington guns will be at a slightly higher price than similar EAA models, so buying an EAA model is a good investment since the price will only increase. If you are a dealer, stock up on all the EAA Baikal guns you can find and enjoy the profit. The change to Spartan by Remington was a positive change for the Baikal line and fully supported by EAA Corp. The Baikal plant in Russia will now be working with one of the oldest and largest names in the USA firearms business and we are proud to have had a part in this historic event.

We will keep all our IZH / Baikal models on the website for the time being while inventories are being sold off.

In the, 'what's in a name," category, they'll be worth more imported by Remington.

Norm, maybe you could try some of those Aguila mini shells in that double. I can't remember for sure, but I think that they are only like 2 inches long and are designed for low recoil. One of the gun rags did a review of bird shot through slug on these that seemed favorable.

BTW, I've always liked those old timey SbyS shotguns.

Yours will last but a brief period. Mine have last for months, at least!

I was thinking about Robinson Crusoe, where he talks about finding the carpenters chest.
