Thrifty Thursday... Cheap Traditional Knives

but I've never spent more than $40.00 on a pocket knife
Spendthrift!
Here is a picture of all the knives I have paid more than $35 for:

Sorry no...my fishing days are behind me.
On the other hand two weeks ago I was on an overnight charter to Moloka'i and my 11 year old nephew got a 111 lbs marlin!
I of course had my cheap Victorinox with me:

Not exactly traditional but plastic fantastic for sure

Jefferson Airplane had a song called Plastic Fantastic Lover. That's traditional almost to the point of antiquity.

Although it is important not to be limited by the quality of the equipment, the skill of the photographer is the most important factor in an excellent photograph. This is especially true of film photography, in which one does not have the freedom to snap away at random until a good photograph appears..

I get equal joy from my Case knives and GEC knives.
I enjoy all sorts of knives, from different points of the price spectrum. Once I’ve shelled out the money I no longer really think about it.

I enjoy them differently though. For my more expensive pieces I often find myself turning them around in my hand and marveling at their beauty and craftsmanship. For the budget knives, I simply appreciate their humble, yeoman capabilities.

I'm not sure how "thrifty" my carry is this week. All four that I'm carrying this week were around $23 ~ $24 and some odd change each, with tax and shipping. :(

EDIT:
Just after posting the above, I noticed one of the bail rivets on the (BTI) Old Timer 23OT Scout/Camp knife is missing.
I have replaced it with my Marbles MR278 ($6.99 with tax plus free shipping from the big river site) so I have at least one "thrifty" knife on me now.

No sign of the missing rivet. It wasn't in the pocket lint or in the blade well of the other two knives in that pocket.
I didn't see any reflections from a bright flashlight checking the carpet, and it wasn't in the box. No doubt I'll locate it the next time I go barefeeted in my room.
It has to be in my room ... I haven't taken it out of my pocket anywhere else today, and it was there this A.M. ...

I guess I'll find out how bad BTI's warranty department is to deal with.

I have a number of Okapi knives, and while I respect the tradition of the Ring-Opener style, I don't particularly like them for carry, preferring the non-locking versions, such as this Biltong Knife, which was very kindly gifted to me by @r8shell :) I hope she doesn't think I'm being cheeky carrying it for Thrifty Thursday ;) Like the other Okapis, it has a lot of character, with great 'peasant' style, and a cool blade stamp I think  The steel isn't the best, but it still gets sharp :) I'm going to enjoy carrying it today, I might even show it to the South African butcher in the market

Measuring 3 3/8 inches, with the ring, a Shapleigh"s EVERY BOY and a Shapleigh"s GENERAL UTILITY. And notice the closed backs. I wonder if the guarantee still applies? Have a Thoroughly Thrifty Thursday! T-A

its a shame they never made it to these shores - I bet they would have filled many a boys pocket

I like my little sheffield folders but the old Shapleigh"s realy do tick the boxes for me especially the EVERY BOY

Thrifty Thursday Carry
Case Boys Knife in Yellow Delrin
It's a 3" knife and has super slim handles.
I can just imagine a boy in the 50's saving his money to buy one.

Another absolute classic for me

wish these would come out of the vault at some point - exactly like that too :D

Nice!
For a while these were available on the big shopping site, and I got several. I gave some as gifts.

A few I got seemed to be a newer version than these, with a different blade steel (stainless?), and the chisel grind going all the way up to the spine. My dad really liked his, but mentioned on several occasions he prefers something with a point, so I made him this:

He gave the un-modified one to his friend who thought it was cool.

MY thrifty carry for today is this cheap Pakistan Barlow, which has a surprising amount of character and has pretty much been my constant companion since it arrived a couple of weeks ago. The bone on the side not pictured here has some color variation and a hairline crack, which gives it a well-worn look. I’m not a fan of stainless, but this is not polished, at least, and pretty sharp once I finally got the wire edge off it. It is a little thick behind the edge - I took some sandpaper to the pen blade to redo the bevel a little but it still needs some work. I had to take a file to the pen blade kick because it rode too high and got in the way of the main blade’s nail nick. Anyway, I feel like it has already provided me with 8 bucks worth of tinkering and amusement, and it just goes to show, you never know what will strike your fancy.

That's interesting Tom, I'd seen that there were stainless models, but didn't realise there was a difference in the grinds. Nice mod on your dad's knife  Here's another that someone bought me back from a trip to France

Bargain Barlow there

I bought a whole bunch of Okapis while they were easily available - most as re-handling and modification projects - but I did keep one each of their current offerings un-modified, just to have the full set:
