Thrifty Thursday... Cheap Traditional Knives

Strangely, I don't remember them as a kid.
It's a fond memory for me.
As a kid, visiting my Grandmother, ina small town.
While the older people were visiting, they'd give us restless kids a few dimes and send us downtown.
I'd spend a dime for a soda at the diner, and another dime for a yo-yo or top at the Five-and-Dime store.
They both had those display cards full of knives, and I'd wish I had enough dimes to buy one for myself. :(

Hey I like this one John... good idea! Looks like I will have to take some time at lunch to look through this thread  Often times I will be certain I am going to make an offer on a knife and I will also take a look through to see what other knives the seller may have. One of my favorite "cheap" knives are Thornton USA or Johnston USA, if I remember right they were made by the same manufacturer. You can get them for $15 or less from most sellers. Yes the scales are usually hideous :D but all of the ones I have take a really sharp edge and they have great snap and full half stop. You won't ever worry about losing one but you'll be happily zipping through your pile of Amazon boxes that need to fit in the recycle bin :)

Not the cheapest thing you'll see in this thread, but the Ontario 498 can't be beat for $50 if you want a real deal US made Mk2.

And you can put a little work into them to make them great.

This one here is going to my buddy, because I've got another new one on the way to put a little work into.

Do these count as "thrifty"?
Mora 511 or 611, I forget which. Carbone Blade is about 1/4 inch longer than the Mora Number 1 (Carbone Blade)
Cold Steel FINN BEAR
I believe all are under $20 each.

The FINN BEAR and Number 1 are always in my primary rollator's tote bag. I'm not sure if that makes them part of my EDC.

Another 20% discount thrifty knife from my 2018 Black Friday binge. (My go-to dealer from those days never offers more than a 5% discount anymore, and no longer has the best deals I can find online. :() This full-size Rough Rider faux tortoise shell canoe was $4.80 + tax:

I’ve never been one to say this is a good knife “for the price.” It’s either good or it’s not. I may have to amend my thinking. I’ve sung the praises of the RR swayback work knife in mystery black micarta. Recently I’ve noticed shrinkage of the micarta where it meets the bolsters. It’s not a big deal mostly because of the price. It would be upsetting if I’d paid substantially more. It doesn’t affect the function so it’s still a good knife.F1632246-0E06-4A38-ADD8-E92680443401.png
