Looks good Frank.

That photo made me smile, too. Light sabre and snow on the ground.
I am also glad to see another smithy that looks as neat and tidy as mine:)

decided to make mine a takedown.......

WAAAAAAAAAH!
Looks like there were a bunch of cracks in the spine........still unsure what caused them. Grain size is fine...........didn't start from any obvious stress risers. The only thing I can think is I did some straightening at a low heat.........maybe too low........may have been too much for it.
Back to the forge for me I guess.

I got the main parts of the scabbard fabricated this morning,.. not the final finish. I'm still going to add some silver details etc. I left the wood un-sealed for now in case it needs touch up before final assembly. The ebonization (wood "patina") went well, (done with a solution of steel wool dissolved in vinegar, brushed on).

Thanks PanchO. It's all been pretty much touch and go. I bought a box of rubber gloves this morning, so as not to mess up the ebonization while I'm working on the fittings.

... so far so good, I guess. Knock on wood. :)

let me just add that everyone who is making something for this challenge is extremely talented and makes beautiful work

Well finally got some free time to work on it some more!

Handle shaping of black g10 (I live in louisiana so swamp country and all requires waterproof and g10 works well for this application)

… Still working on the scabbard. Slowly but surely, I think I’m through the worst of it,… still have to get a belt loop gobbed on the back and finish fabricating the tip.

Once I saw it, I decided to change it a bit from the original sketch. I figure about 1/3 of the entire project is in the scabbard… It’ll be nice to get through this part.

Well, it is spring, and summer will soon be here. Camping and time in the woods will be a part of many of our lives.

A good way to have all the folks here on Shop talk get involved in a Virtual BBQ/Hammer-in Get Together is to have a simple challenge build.

In response to some recent inquiries, it seems that small swords/choppers are always popular. A camp sword is not out of the range of most makers with even the most basic equipment.

Lets all make a camp sword with the following specs range:
Blade Material - anything you have around. Simple 1075/1084 steels work very well for these.
Blade Shape - Whatever trips your trigger. Simple shapes cut as well as fancy, though. It is hard to beat the classic Bolo shape.
Size - Again, your needs will vary, but a blade from 12-18" long, 1/5-2.5" wide, and from 3/16 to 1/4" thick will be a good size for a camp sword.
A sheath would be nice,too.

Tools for such a build can range from files to CNC mills. HT can range from a fire pit to sending it to a HT specialist. Finish can rage from Brute-de-Forge to a full Japanese togi.
It's all up to you!

Lets see some camp swords built. Post them in this thread. If this sounds good, chime in now. No prize, now winner...everyone have fun.

If there are enough participants, I'll make it a sticky for a while.

your post about Camp sword is very impressive. Really I like your post. Thanks for your posting.

Sarah,
Glad you like it. You are now in charge of baking cookies for the BBQ. An anvil shaped cake would also be nice :)
If you decide to make a camp sword, we can cut the cake with it.

Welcome to the Bladeforums, and especially to Shop Talk.
You are in good company, and will find that there are several chefs and former chefs on Shop Talk.
Also, some of the finest cutlery makers for chefs, as well as the guys who sharpen their tools, are to be found here.

We need the presence of a female ( I hope I am getting that right) here, as we often get so testosterone charged, that we forget there are ladies who like knives....and read our forum.
