Toohr #3 knife sharpener

May be my english.... , 100$ is Hapston diamond start set, electroplated, 5 pieces set, 200-1200 grit, 15x25mm
Whoops, my mistake, morning brain misread the post. I don't have any experience with the Hapstone diamonds so I can't comment there.

While thinking about what sharpening system to choose I pulled out my old thrusting Japanese stones and sharpened few knives from my kitchen. Still don't like water and mess that manual natural stones sharpening is producing but very happy with result....

At the screen where you create password etc. it will not let me proceed (I double, triple checked that I was meeting the password requirements).
If my memory serves me right i had the same issue. I think i just kept trying till it went through, i think.

This is probably the only part I am a little concerned about with long term use. I can already see a bit of wear on my brass bushing, and it seems that yours is also showing slight signs of wear.

I'm expecting the steel balls to eventually wear out grooves in the brass and for it to pick up slop in the nice solid stops it has right now when you rotate the bar.

If this part was hardened steel as opposed to brass, then it would have been great.

Edit -typo
Wow, that’s concerning. Coming from a person that is well astute on knife sharpeners such as yourself, I hope mine doesn’t wear any time soon also., :(

It still has a bit of wiggle, enough to throw it of by a small fraction of a degree.
Yes, in many other systems typically the part where the bearings slot into a bushing (similar to this one) it is manufactured from hardened steel.
I hope mine doesn’t wear any time soon also.
For now, as these are new / almost new, how about a consumable periodically changed out , like nylon film, film of ivory soap like lubing drawer runners n hinges, plastidip, etc? I remember after about 900 sharpenings, Pete demonstrated his KME's nylon stone holder guide for rod needed replacement as the press fit would fail and pop out of steel stay sometimes, with wierd torquing forces. And in the 60's, Nylock nuts were the answer early on for poorly spec'd foreign bolts, etc...

Oh, ok. I see what you’re saying. I couldn’t help wonder if I should spent an extra 100 for better sharpener lol

Well I'm hoping one of our contributing expert chronicalers will respond, I'm a hobbyest.

The question is never "how fast do you want to go", but "how fast do you want to spend." I have more time now in retirement, then extra C notes. Still blessed beyond belief for the things in life that really matter though.:)

Lol I hear you on that one! :)

Yup, we don't know how well parts will hold up at this point. Hardness of the brass is also an unknown as a softer batch could wear faster than a harder one. How will it act as it wears, will it really be thrown off or become hard to use? These are all questions that will need months of good use to find out.

I have a machinist friend I can bug about seeing how much it would cost to have a part made from steel, perhaps even fit with a bronze bushing for the bolt for a really tight fit.

I would not be overly concerned about it, especially if you're not going to use it as a professional sharpener. It would have been nice if it was not brass, but time will tell how it holds up. To date, I've done about 25-30 knives on my TooHR. I can see slight wear in the brass part, but nothing excessive.

What I have done, is loosen my spring tension nut all the way (and it's still more than enough tension for sharpening any knife). I also lubed my brass part and its bearings with white lithium grease for good metal on metal lubrication.

I also don't "whack" it back and forth while rotating the clamp bar, I slowly turn it and let it settle into position every time I rotate.

Ok, I will take heed to that! Thanks for the tip

I stumbled across this thread from reddit. I'm new to sharpening, have a few whetstones and enjoy having sharp kitchen knives. Started sharpening family and friends knives, the latest 2 that were put in my care are pocket knives. I told my wife I really need this system to up my game. Put an order in last night, 128.00 cad, 90.00 shipping, 10.00 discount. I'm travelling to the US in December and am looking to have some accessories sent to my daughter's residence to avoid Canada shipping hassles. I've gone through this thread and it sounds like I would benefit from the Hapstone R2 lite clamps, R2 clamp adapter for KO3, stones, and an angle finder. It looks like I could get everything from Gritomatic. Would their 6" Edge Pro Diamond Matrix stones be a good match for this sharpener. Also looking at their digital angle guage.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks to everyone who has posted information about this unit!

Welcome to the forum D downdog !

Yes, any of the 6 inch stones that Gritomatic sells will work with this model TooHR, and their digital angle cube is great value for the money.

If you end up getting the Edge Pro diamond matrix or CGSW stones, be aware that their top surface has a layer of resin that needs some lapping with silicon carbide or similar powder/grit to remove it before use. The Venev diamond resin stones are ready to use as-is.

You guys sparked my interest.
Just ordered the red one, to try it out...

Ordered on Nov. 13, my unit showed up today, 5 days ahead of the estimated delivery date. Not bad KPXIN Tool Store, not bad at all. 👍

Everything was intact, and all parts were present and accounted for.
The only nitpick I could find, was a minor amount of wear to the red anodizing, on one of the sliding table end caps.

Several of the various fasteners were found to be loose, and were snugged up, prior to assembly.
Due to the great pictorials posted on this thread by B Bdtry , I knew exactly what to look for, ahead of time. 🙏

The parts of my unit were clean, for the most part, and everything seems to be functioning smoothly, after assembly.

First impressions:
Construction appears to be pretty solid. Everything seems to be relatively simple to work on, and replaceable, if the need arises.
(I know a couple of really good machinists) ;)

The fit and finish isn't on par with my Kadet Pro, but then, the Toohr is a quarter the price of the Kadet Pro.
For the money, I think it's a killer deal on a guided sharpener.

Looking forward to doing a sharpening on it, and I'll post more pics and impressions, when I can.

Enjoy your weekend! 🍻

Yes, he is to be congratulated for spending the time to point out possible glitches, will save a lot of time.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Impressive looking unit, looking forward to more pics and a road report.

Did a first sharpening with my new Toohr #3, on this dismal, rainy Sunday morning.🌧️

Sharpened my S45VN DLC PM2 work knife at 15.5 dps. 15.5 is where the factory secondary bevel was at, so I left it as found.
I used only two stones, 120 and 400 grit Poltava CBN stones, for a very nice, sticky sharp working edge.
Finished with a .5 micron diamond emulsion loaded strop.

No real issues to speak of, while using the Toohr, other than having to bring the sharpener to the very edge of my desk,
to allow unimpeded rotation of the blade clamp assembly.
Will definitely be looking for that 3D printed riser, from 777 Edge 777 Edge , in the future. ;)

The parking hook for the guide rod worked great for me. I simply set it where I wanted it, snugged the screw down,
and then bent the hook to where it would easily and repeatedly accept the guide rod.

After setting the sharpening angle, I flipped the blade clamp assembly over, re-checked the angle, and found that it repeated perfectly, with no adjustments necessary.
When going from stones to strop, the thickness difference was easily checked and adjusted for, using the angle cube. No big deal.

Overall, I'm glad I picked one of these up to try out.
My primary use for it will be sharpening larger fixed blade knives, while my Kadet Pro will be used on smaller folders and fixed blades.

I think it's a great sharpener for the money, and look forward to using it more in the future.
As long as the price stays around $100-$120, I will certainly recommend it to friends that are in the market for a guided sharpener. 🍻
