did you pick the polished version or did you do something to the watch case? this is my hospital watch for sheer convenience

I’m not really a watch guy. I’ve had this Luminox for over 20 years, and in that time it’s been my only watch. The battery died recently (first time since we moved to MN) and I was having trouble finding a place locally that could do the battery and also pressure test. I was planning on sending it to Luminox (or rather, to their authorized US repair center) to have it done, but the watch suddenly disappeared from my bedside table. I found it in the basement laundry room on the concrete floor… with a cracked crystal. I’m guessing my youngest probably walked off with it and dropped it.

Not that big of a deal, I thought. I was going to send it to Luminox anyways for the battery, I can have them replace the crystal. Turns out they no longer make parts for my watch (despite it being nearly identical to the Navy Seal watch they still sell), so not only can they not replace the crystal, they won’t even do pressure testing because they can’t replace any seals/gaskets. 😡

They did offer me a 50% discount on any watch they sell, although their watches cost about twice as much as they did when I bought mine, so I’d still be paying the same amount I paid for mine and it doesn’t really feel like a discount. I haven’t decided yet if I’m going to buy one. In the meantime I think I might pick up an inexpensive Timex or something. Despite not being a “watch guy,” I don’t like not having one.

That’s sad. Really. But I’d go for the discount and have a nice watch for the next 20+ years. I may have a spare nice Luminox in my collection I could maybe part with but it would still be a few hundred bucks.

I probably will. Eventually. I’ve looked through most of the watches they currently offer, and would/will probably just go with the standard/“original” Navy Seal watch, which is closest to the watch I had. And at half off it really isn’t a bad deal, but it also isn’t money I need to spend at the moment. (I guess I could always find one GEC to sell and cover most or all of the cost, but where’s the fun in that?) 😁

When I have time to dig into my safe I can grab the watch and PM you a pic, and maybe there would be a way to do a trade. I'm not actively looking to sell anything, so I'll have it for a while.

It’s always sad when an old friend dies on you… but I find this story a bit too sad. Watch crystals can be replaced, just the right hight and diameter is needed, the same goes for most gasgets. And just a battery change should not call for a visit at an AD or manufacturer. Maybe look for a solar powered as watch next, Citizen eco drive or Casio will give you good bang for buck.

You should be able to find aftermarket parts that will fit if you want to try to fix it yourself. It might require a couple inexpensive tools like a case back opener and a crystal press, but it's not very hard to do. Or you could take it to a watch repair store like this one: https://fastfix.com/stores. They should be able to fix it up.
