traditional knives in movies

In Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison, it is 1944. Robert Mitchum plays a marine stranded on a Pacific island. Also shipwrecked was a nun played by Deborah Kerr.

Tropical paradise, beautiful girl, shack by the shore—it was a tough job, but somebody had to do it. You gotta respect Robert Mitchum.

Private Allison’s only tool and weapon is his Kabar Mark II. He uses it often, for many purposes, throughout the film.

Haven't seen this thread in a while.

In the movie Insomnia with Robin Williams and Al Pacino, the character Pacino plays uses a small traditional pocket knife on several occasions.

Just recently saw that movie on Netflix. I must admit that I cringed a bit with some of applications that knife was used for and realized I've done the same myself. Good movie though.

Yes indeed! :D I'd seen the film before, but not for a few years

I noticed some are mentioning shows as well. I recently was watching a episode of the new "Hawaii 50" and the character played by Scott Caan pulled out a slip joint which really shocked me as I was expecting the usual tactical type! It looked like a GEC jack of some kind like a #15 or 85!

It took me a good while before I realized that Scott Caan was James Caan's son...

I wonder how a slipjoint holds up in Hawaii?

I grew up with a couple of bayonets in the house. Dad took them as part of a trade; stuff for construction work. There was a lot of barter during the depression.

The bayonets were German, with fourteen inch blades. The scabbards were the military, steel, rattle-your-saber type. That model was around before their use in WWI. One of Dad’s pair had a crosscut saw filed into the spine. That was called a pioneer bayonet. http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=pioneer+bayonet&qpvt=Pioneer+bayonette&qpvt=Pioneer+bayonette I claimed them when I left home. Alas. If I hadn’t, they might not have been lost to a burglar.

In the Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, Series 2, Episode 4, Deadweight, the murder weapon is the dead spit of my old pioneer bayonet. One character said, “The last time I saw one of those it was stuck in the belly of my mate.” Look about 15 minutes in, though it’s shown again.

If TV shows count:
On "Sleepy Hollow" a few weeks ago, Ichabod was in a farmers market, and pulled out what looked to be a granddaddy barlow to cut an apple.

In 'Frontera' Ed Harris tosses what looked to be a sowbelly when he went into the police station along with his keys, seem so matter of fact kind of thing, made me look at the sowbelly's a little closer :)

In TV shows, Last night I was watching a Andrew Zimmern rerun from 2013, in Alabama. They went hog hunting, and some guy hung up the hog they shot and skinned it clean in a few minutes with what looked like a well worn yellow handle Case trapper. Very well patined CV blades.

The wild hog BBQ looked delicious!!

Andrew Zimmern uses several pocket knives on the show. I've seen him with a swiss army knife a patada and a mora fixed blade .
Late last season he switched to a Kershaw Leek

Not really a Movie, but I saw on the TV-series "The Walking Dead" at the 3rd season someone using a Buck 110 while they were in prison. This was the time when the disease was raging there.
Or at least it was a 110 style of knife, but I think it was a real 110.

Buck 110 near the beginning of Kill Bill. 'The Bride' uses it to effect. Lots of traditional blades in that one ;)

The bowie Sam Elliot wields in "The quick and the dead" really makes me want one of this kind. That's a knife ! Mineral Mountain Hatchet Works had a set of two very similar to sale two years ago. I was too tight to jump, regrets...

I thought of this thread today at lunch. We set up TV trays and eat in the office in front of the TV to watch Bonanza or Gunsmoke. I have seen most of the characters use slip joints from time to time. Ben used his to dig a bullet out of a wall on the episode today. They never show the knives much, just open them use them then slip them back into a pocket, usually on the vest.

I love it when this thread pops up! The other day I was watching the pilot episode of "The Man in the High Castle" and one of the main characters used an old scout pattern to open a box and twist some screws. The show has some traditional knife potential, taking place in the 60s. I hope it gets picked up.

I thought it look like a trapper but could not tell for sure. I have done a couple searches but can not find any more information.

Sonnemann mentioned this knife earlier in this thread, although with a mis-typed movie title so it's not readily found via search. The knife's a beaut!

If I recall correctly, it's a 'regular' Victorinox Climber-- note the hook (not in the above image, but in the film)-- re-clad in stag and bailed (with an awesome shield). :)
