traditional knives in movies

I noticed two traditional knives in movies recently. The first was last week, when we went to see the 70mm roadshow version of Quentin Tarantino's new film, The Hateful Eight. At one point, Samuel L. Jackson's character holds a large folding knife to the throat of another character (played by Michael Madsen).

It's difficult to find an image of the scene that shows the knife well, as the movie just came out in theaters. I was able to get this screenshot from the trailer. When we were watching it in the theater, I noticed that the knife had a fairly large clip point blade, and the handle appeared to be mostly black (like ebony wood), with a good-sized bolster like a barlow. It was definitely a folding knife, as in the film you see Jackson fold it shortly after this instance.

The other I noticed was in The Silence of the Lambs, when Hannibal Lecter manages to escape his cell by killing two police officers. After attacking them, there is an overhead shot showing an officer lying on the ground with items presumably from his pockets strewn about the floor around his body. You can see a folding knife with light colored covers and what appears to be some sort of engraving or scrimshaw. To me it looks like the shape of a trapper, although when Lecter picks up the knife, opens it and then snaps it shut, it appears that it only has one blade and not two.

Imaged removed per moderators request due to graphic content (blood, etc.). You can see the images of the knife as it appears in the film here and here

ah, what memories, thats one of the reasons i made this account, to ask about that knife in silence of the lambs

Maybe we could do without the gore? Family friendly?

My apologies, Frank. Should I remove those images from my post? Perhaps a URL link to them with a content warning would be better?

Edited to add: That's what I've done for now. Hopefully it's acceptable.

I'm sorry I didn't want to browse through this thread but lately I was just hanging on my couch and watching telly, and Titanic was playing in there. Anyway, in the beginning of the movie where Jack (I think it was, DiCaprio's character anyway) was gambling for the tickets to the Titanic, there was some sort of easy open tear drop slippie on the table.

So this is one I saw on a TV show and not a movie, but I think that's close enough to the idea of this thread (and hopefully preferable to starting a new thread).

I was watching the new episode of Duck Dynasty last week, and at the beginning of the episode, Jase can be seen using a massive slipjoint to cut up a 6-foot sub.

I did a little searching and found this article about that exact knife. I mean, who doesn't need a 15 lb "pocket" knife? :D

I'm no expert on Buck knives (in fact, I only just got my first 110 recently), but I think the Buck knife that The Bride uses in Kill Bill is a 112. That, or Uma Thurman has huge hands.

Nice knife but it doesn't look too pocket friendly.

I haven't browsed through the entire thread either, but I remember in Titanic, DiCaprio's character has a spear-point bladed pocketknife visible a couple of times. Later in the film, men are seen opening their jackknives with their teeth in order to cut the ropes holding the lifeboats.

I'll also mention the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre; the guy in the wheelchair has what looks like a Camillus(?) scout knife. It's the character's most prized possession.

Another one from a TV show. I've finally been catching up on the last season of Boardwalk Empire. This clip point folder appears a couple times in the second to last episode. This is the best shot of it.

I thought of this thread today at lunch. We set up TV trays and eat in the office in front of the TV to watch Bonanza or Gunsmoke. I have seen most of the characters use slip joints from time to time. Ben used his to dig a bullet out of a wall on the episode today. They never show the knives much, just open them use them then slip them back into a pocket, usually on the vest.

Chris

Also the Big Valley had several over the years.

I've seen Phil sharpening what appears to be some Schrade knives on several episodes, and Si is always playing with either a pair of scissors or a folder, that looks like an old Gerber maybe.

A knife maker that claims to be a neighbor of the Robertsons says he has made some knives for them, and the man that relayed this, claims to know them well, he is a resident of West Monroe. FWIW, I talked with the guy on FB in one of the knife groups. I've never seen those Kershaws they partnered with to make on the show.

The knife from The Silence of the Lambs (mentioned a few times in this thread) was brought up in the off topic thread today, and after looking at it more closely, I think I figured it out, so I figured I'd post it here as well. Pretty sure it's a Schrade Scrimshaw. Here's a highly cropped photo from the movie, and the only photo I could find of the particular Schrade I'm pretty sure is a match. (Sorry for the poor photo quality/size on each.)
