Traditional of the Month: Barlow

Great color, I'm impressed.

Well, I'm late to the party. Started carrying Dad's old Barlow in my pocket on the 1st. In honor of Barlow Month and Independence Day, my wife and I watched the 1970's version of "Tom Sawyer" with Jonny Whitiker as "Tom" and Jodie Foster as "Becky" on the 4th. Great movie, made me wish I could run around everywhere barefoot and live on an island in the middle of the great Mississippi river. Ol' Tom and Huck both were quick to pull out their own Barlow knives and swear blood oaths or build a little shelter to sleep under. Those boys were really onto something, I'm beginning to like this Barlow pattern pretty well, a pattern I never really had much interest in until I started carrying it. Opens up a whole new problem for me because now I want another one with a few less miles and not quite so loose scales. Danged ol' disease!!

I cut them only on the nail nick side like most of the older barlow i've seen...for both side swedges I have used the thicker bladed sunfish (and went full blade on back side and half swedge on nick side).

That's what I thought. You know, back in the day some companies only polished the mark side of the main blade and left the pile side of the main blade and other blades in the knife with a brush finish.

Anyway, great job on the swedges - really sets the knife off.

This Sabre barlow used to be my Dad's. I found it rusted up a few years back and cleaned it. I don't use it since the main blade spring is quite squishy and the pen blade is nigh on immovable. It has a great deal of sentimental value though so I'm content to leave it as is. I'm hoping to find a good carry barlow of my own sometime in the near future.

The barlow i have been carrying today is well used and if it could talk I am sure it could tell some interesting stories.

C'mon guys. We can't let the Traditional of the Month knife slip off page one. Here's another one of my Barlows.

CV Case cut red bone Barlow from the 1940 - 1964 period.

Note, the main clip blade is assembled behind the secondary pen blade. By doing so, Case had to move the nail nick far forward on the clip blade. This was a somewhat un-common arrangement of the blades but by no means a rare arrangement.

Thanks for highlighting that, I would have missed it. I'm finding I prefer the nicks more forward regardless, for better leverage (when a blade isn't pinch-able).

My little GEC (my only Barlow) is seeing daily duty. I need to take some more pictures!

Finally got a pic of my GEC, but it isn't the greatest:

I like this single blade Taylor's Eye Witness, flush tang when closed:

I really like this Queen Dan Burke, but the blade edge grinds are horrendous, took me hours to fix the wharncliffe.

I just finished cleaning up my Imperial, it's worse for the wear but now the blades are sharp and the walk n talk are back. Now I need take a pic.

Amazing barlows on this page. I'm still hanging in; day nine - one barlow. Saves me a few minutes not having to decide what to carry.

Funny, I've kinda been ignoring this knife but I'm really getting to know it now.

I'm out :-( I lasted a week which is very good for me, but then I got a Buck Canoe through the post and had to carry that. Today it's a slimline trapper by Case.
I'm just not a one knife guy much as I'd like to be. I will say if that canoe hadn't arrived in the post I think I'd still be EDC'ing the Barlow, I was very happy with it.

Yeah if my new GEC half congress arrives today, that may be it for me...

Aw. I'm going to miss more pictures of the little green Hulk this month!

But, if it's not a fun challenge, it's not a fun challenge, so-- better happy than grimly trying to see something through!

I look forward to the pictures of the other knives, elsewhere.

Meanwhile, in the interests of barlow solidarity, I have shored up the ranks with reinforcements.

Well, one reinforcement, anyway.

Kinda have a thing for that tree.

I am still going strong with my Queen Dan Burke, so far its been pretty easy, but my 2011 BF knife keeps calling my name every morning

Congrats on the new knife. I agree about the tree logo. Did yours come with the paperwork that tells about the origin of the logo? If not, it can also be found on Boker's website along with the history of the company.

Thanks for that link, dannyp! Boker has quite a history. I have an Arbolito Boker (Argentina), and the quality is excellent.

There's a Barlow style out there right now (from a mega knife dealer/distributor), that's offering one with a locking mechanism similar to that of the iconic Buck 110.

Have any of you seen one of them???
