Traditionals and Cast Iron Cookware

I've got a few pieces, mostly wagner ware of various ages from 8" skillet through 14" skillet, a chicken fryer that still has the original glass lid (all with the smooth interiors), a Lodge dutch oven that also has the machined interior. No ring on the lid, it's just a lid. A 12" no name dutch oven that does have the cooking style lid. It also has interior that was machined smooth. There's also a small deep fryer pot and basket think it's a Lodge too. I use the smaller stuff and the Lodge dutch the most. Someday when I get the gumption, I'll take some pictures. As it happens, I've got a tuna casserole in the oven right now in the 8" skillet.:)

Noooooo!!!😠

Yes. Went on a camping trip with friends. The griddle was very disgusting and I was too lazy/tired to clean it, so I just threw it in the fire. I figured since it was an overbuilt, modern Lodge it should be ok. I was wrong.

I now have firsthand knowledge of why cleaning cast iron in this manner is ill-advised. At least I did it with a modern Lodge and not one of my vintage Griswolds or Wagners.

Still not something I'd want to have happen to mine, I'd still be devastated.

It's just stuff, and readily replaceable.

I don't know what's worse, stupidity or carelessness. I left my first piece of quality CI behind in a cabin we rented once. I assumed my wife had packed it up, and forgot to check the stove prior to leaving.

Never done it with cast, but carelessness has cost me other things, and you're right, it can be replaced. Nonetheless, it stinks.

This is why I always take to task the "throw it in a hot fire!" cast iron advice and advisors. Absolutely no advantages over chemicals or elbow grease, it's all risk, no benefit.

Steel wool and some canola oil will make up for a multitude of sins when it comes to cast iron. So will just boiling plain old tap water in it before the steel wool program.
