two legged snake problems in the woods

... and we bought Alaska from the Ruskies later anyway. So we have cold now for those that want it.

We already had cold. I know people who moved from Minnesota to Alaska because the winters in Alaska are warmer. :D

Seriously, if you stick to the coast, Alaska winters ARE warmer than Minnesota. But move 20 inches inland in Alaska in the winter time and you'll freeze important body parts off....

Yeah, but folks there talk funny too. Unlike people in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee.... besides... when it snows here, it is pretty for a few days, then gone. Snow shovels? Snow blowers? Why rearrange the stuff if it is going away in a couple of days? And Cape Breton? Gimme a break! Leaving your house from the second story window and walking across the snow? Why? Dayum! I get chilled just thinking about it! Reminds me of that scene in Dr. Zhivago!

The only times I ever encountered ANYONE in the woods was the local sh!theels on their quads. They're loud, so I had warning, but I know for a fact they'd have no problem running me over if they could.

You know, I never had a problem in the woods. I don't carry a gun, unless hunting, and never felt the need to either. But please don't jump all over me about being anti-gun, in my country I can't legally carry one unless with a hunters permit, during the right season and it pretty much has to be a rifle or a shotgun. Thats just how it is over here!

Where I do have problems, it is usually in the public campsite parts, where some goofball tries to take half your campsite and then act like you are the one with a problem. Or the lady beside you, taking her young'uns out, tries to light the old wet stump using copious amounts of gasoline.

That was uncalled for and very jerkish.
But back to the actual issue you were supposed to be addressing, $80 isn't much,

$80 is an OUTRAGE...........at least in the USA.

Why should anyone be forced to PAY A FEE before exercising a RIGHT ? (at least it's a Right in the USA)

That paying $80 doesn't bother YOU speaks volumes.

.

You know, I never had a problem in the woods.

I have only had one, and it was at a public, but isolated boat ramp. About one in the morning and a couple of drunk rednecks wanted to get to know my wife better. No one got shot but I was glad I was armed.

I am not advocating everyone carrying a gun, I am advocating everyone having the right if they chose. I don't care if someone is anti-gun as long as they don't try to make me anti-gun. Chris

1. Guns are made to kill things, and I don't like to killing things. Now I'm going to contradict myself some when I say this I do own bows & crossbows, I collect swords and other period weapons and have trained period fighting styles (think of it as western martial arts.) But, to me there is a skill and an art to use these and use them effectivly--any idiot can use a gun (I'm not calling anybody here an idiot, but many of you have relayed stories on this thread of said idiots.)

2. I dislike handguns more than other types of firearms as handguns (at least the vast majority) are designed to kill people, and I don't think that there is a need for the average citizen to be able to own handguns.

Now I say all this being very firearm educated and not ignorance. I come from a family of hunters and my father is a retired federal agent. I grew-up with guns, learning: safety, responsibility, identification, and how to shoot.

Dude, you're a classic case of "doesn't know what he doesn't know." Your ignorance is appalling.

Sure, any idiot can press the trigger on a gun and make it go boom. It takes about the same amount of skill and gray matter to swing the swords that you think are so much more acceptable.

On the other hand, the use of the handgun for self-defense and combat is one of the few genuinely American martial arts. Your message indicates you have no comprehension of the level of skill some people have with firearms and how much effort it takes to develop them. The fact that grew up in a family of hunters and your father being a Fed apparently taught you very little.

If it weren't so sad, your repetition that guns are for killing so they are bad, but you think all of your favored weapons are good would be laughable. You're either delusional or your intellectual dishonesty is impressive.

Sir please don't be a...we'll just say jerk for the mods sake. I work 3 jobs & I have a sick animal whose care is also taking up a bit of time.

SIR? I work for a living.

As for being a jerk, I didn't call swordsmen idiots.

I commend you for working 3 jobs and certainly hope that your animal enjoys a full recovery, although I am not quite sure how that applies to your earlier comments. Chris

The Appalachian Trail and all national parks are "gun free zones" -- so the locals know it's safe to rob, rape, and assault hikers and campers there. I've heard stories about hikers passing some guy on the trail with no gear standing in a pile of cigarrette butts who winds up following them after they pass..

You mean........the hikers aren't carrying their sword or crossbow ????

:D :D :D

Guys, what the hell? Do personal attacks get anyone anywhere? This is a very interesting and necessary conversation to have, but only if its done intelligently. Maybe another thread should be started so that this one can talk about assholes in the woods?

I might get into the crossbow thing, what do yall think would be better for one shot stops, 2 or 4 blade broadheads?

Maybe I should study up a bit more on the 100 years war it seems that the french tried crossbows and we all know how battle tested and ferocious the french are.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hundred_Years'_War
The most famous weapon was the English and Welsh longbow of the yeoman archer: while not a new weapon at the time, it played a significant role throughout the war, giving the English tactical advantage in the many battles and skirmishes in which they were used. The French mainly relied on crossbows, often employed by Genoese mercenaries. The crossbow was used because it took little training or skill to operate effectively.

I'd carry a handgun in the woods if legally obtaining a permit for one on in my area was remotely possible..took me a year and a half just to get a rifle/shotgun permit. If I'm hunting I bring an appropriate firearm for the quarry. If I'm woods loafing I sometimes bring my recurve just to stump shoot. as far as self defense goes.. I carry bearspray and a stout walking stick. If I could bring along a handgun I probably would but it would be something that could double duty to put some bunnies in the pot.

Ok, now THAT is funny !

:D :D :D

.

I do my best.

Curiously, I forgot you were in this topic before I posted my message. Our fact-challenged correspondent's claims that any idiot can use a gun are exceptionally ironic with respect to you or someone like you.

Here's a way to look at it: any idiot can murder someone with a gun or be the cause of a tragedy through their negligence. It takes skill, judgement, self-control, and awareness to use a gun effectively for defense.

Well, unless you get lucky (which happens a lot).

Now, we can cut and past "sword" or "bow and arrow" every place I used "gun" above and it's equally true.

And of course, those who are actually think for themselves will think, "Duh, of course." Those who regurgitate the fear-inspired anti-gun propaganda without question might not get the point as quickly.

What a crock of shiite, this media brainwashed attitude is the reason that we will lose our gun rights, it is inevitable as the sun coming up tomorrow. It boggles my mind that anyone would be able to draw a distinction between a sword and a handgun yet here we have it in black and white. Chris

I agree with you 100 percent! And you know as everyone else does that swords don't have a sporting value as do handguns and oh yeah knives are just as deadly as handguns in the hands of maniacs... go ahead and tell me that you can't shoot everyone in the room with a knife and i will probably tell you that if i am in that room and you don't choose me first...well then my 2cnd amendment rights will take care of the rest! Every sane human should go armed.... it's proven time and time again that armed citizens are safer citizens. I have had to wield my 1911 in defense of my life against a knife attacker! Guess who won? Let's just say that a .45 is pretty darn convincing! no i didn't shoot the idiot as i didn't have to. I collect guns of all types, knives of all sorts and yes swords too and i am unwilling to hand my rights to do so over to my government or anyone else's. I vote carefully as i will not take part in the further destruction of my country's constitution and the rights of all her citizens even the idiots that don't know the first thing about the politician they vote for.
