• Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! I hope that you all have something to be grateful for this year and for many years to come
  • America has reached 250 years, and I am grateful to be here, in the best country in the world. Thank every one of you who helps make this country a better place, those who have gone before and risked it all, and those who've paid the ultimate price to make the United States what we are today.

    Happy Birthday America! Let Freedom Ring for all time!

Uh, oh! Not a knife, yet.

Ha! I don't know, David! But I sure am having fun!
I think some of my enthusiasm comes from that know that I'm using quality, (and my personal favourite) steel, and that it will be ht'ed properly once I am done by a professional. Making this an actual, useable tool.
That and all the great advice and encouragement I've received, that is!

I love making things:).

Lorien! You Rock!

Hmmm. Special tools? Expert advice? Raw talent?
This would make a great tutorial.

Cheers,
Dave

I, personally, think you should feel bad that there are a lot of guys with the "knifemaker" title next to their name on this site... that don't even come close to doing work that looks that good. ;) :foot: :)

:thumbup: :cool: :thumbup:

Andrew, it's top secret, so I can't tell you, but the handle material he's going to use rhymes with Lignum Vitae :D

Nick... that's even better than sending him a piece of hardened steel :p I had a First Sargeant in the Army that had a piece of that he had from a college art class. He'd been sculpting on it for nearly 30 years off and on with hand tools :D

Lorien, when you get tired of that lignum vitae I'll send you some hemp cordage :p

Andrew, orange and purple rhyme with lignum vitae.. :rolleyes: sheesh and y'all call rednecks stoopid. :p

:barf:I'm gonna puke. I cannot believe I just read that, and all of this.
I'm going to kill it at the race this weekend boys. I am so stoked!
Have a great weekend!:)

great looking so far. you have made really quick progress on that blade. I would hate to tell you how long it took to make my first and only (the itty bitty blade little ugly), in the few stolen moments I had to work on it.

Lorien I would say you are ready to HT. that blade . And it is looking good. If you can do that well on your handle this will be a killer first knife. O and nice wip thread.

Thanks Dave! I still have to sand the other side and get rid of some file marks, but she's getting there. Once I get the blade all cleaned up and ready to go, I'm hoping to start the handle today.

Well, I started getting the handle going;

I have this neat wood, and I'm going to use this piece of titanium tubing, (a bicycle seat post:D) as a ferrule(?) to keep the wood in good shape.

And I got the blade pretty much sanded up. It was a real b!tch trying to get all the file marks out, but I figured it would be easier now that the steel is 'soft':rolleyes: than after I harden it.

Thebasardfiles5005.jpg

I put tape over the side I already sanded, in order to avoid marring the surface I so painstakingly prepared;

I thought I could save some time using this diamond hone. I was wrong.
File, all the way!
