Uh, oh! Not a knife, yet.

Yep, 1084 is just full of eutectoids, that's what makes it a great steel. Now to take full effect of the euctectoids you need a special molecule smooshing hammer (please pardon the technical jargon and I just so happen to have some molecule smooshing hammers for sale). Using the special hammer to break the eutecctoids into smaller molecules is the key to getting a sharp edge.

Sorry....

Joe, you missed my "tang stretcher" comment in post #94.

The ninja monkeys are on strike. They're not happy with me hitting metal poles with their almost completed work :( I'm having a crate of bananas delivered tomorrow.

Looking great.

dammit, now I need an anvil, a forge and some hammers. Blasted eutectoids!

Will, your fruit filled attempt at redemption will get you nowhere, you have forever betrayed the skilled vine swingers..mwaaahaha ....mwaaahahahah:p

Lorien, good stuff anxious to see how you embelish the ferrule, great stuff

Hey Ding Dong, you better not send that to me for heat treat with a handle glued on it!!! :p

It's coming along really well Lorien :)

(glad you didn't need any guard shoulders filed in.... ROFLMFAO :D ).

If you decide to put fullers in it, you can rough it in with a dremel tool, but to get them really consistent and smooth... You'll need to make a tool to clean them up. It's a lot like the sen that Will mentioned. You'll want a HSS square ground tool bit that's the same width as the fuller you want.

You can get HSS square tool bits from just about any tooling supplier (MSC, Enco, Travers, etc.)

You'll have to grind the end of it on a bench grinder to the radius you want your fuller to be.

Rig it up like an edge scribe so that you can drag it along the spine, or a fixtured plate, or some such thing, and get a repeatable motion.

The HSS will cut into soft 1084 like butter. :)

thanks for the tip!:p:D
I've got just a bit more finishing work to do, and then I'll send her off to you for some hot hot love.
I really wanted to make sure I could do the handle the way I envisioned it, without screwing it up, before I sent the blade off and waste your time. It looks like it's all going to work out, (knocking on wood) and I got the tang to fit neatly into my block of wood. It's a very tight fit which is what I was going for. As for fastening, one or two stainless pins, epoxy and some kind of wrap over the wood.
I hope this thing works.

If just arrived at these forums and this is a great thread...

Made me go out and order some 1095 and a few files to start draw filing until I get my belt sander in and start messing up steel with that over and over again.

Can't wait to see this knife finished.

I think I'll be ready to send the blade away for heat treating early next week. While I'm waiting I'll fit the handle pieces together a little better and work on that ferrule. The little knifelike object is the first one I put my hand to, and learned most of the bigger mistakes on. It was a Nicholson file in its former life.

Well, Lorien, the little knife-like object isn't bad, but that big camp/trail is really a good-looking design, and you've done an equally good-looking job on it. It's obvious you don't mind hard work, and obvious you've got an eye for shaping a knife. Now the bad news...This stuff's addictive.

John

Wow! Thank you very much, John. It means an awful lot to me to hear that, especially from you:). I just love your knives!

These past nine days of going from holding a bar of steel in one hand and a bigass file in the other, and scratching my head as what I was going to do with them, to fulfilling a vision have been incredibly inspiring. I could really see myself investing in some more tools as I can afford them, instead of knives:eek:. Among the first of them;

drill press, (I've been wanting one like forever)
toaster oven, (keeping an eye open at the Sally Ann)
scrapers, (I'll make these next)
handle digger-outers, (makin those too)
some fire bricks
a rock saw, (might have one in the pipe)

I figure with these things, I can learn how to heat treat my own tools, and make the kinds of tools that will allow me to carve annealed steel with more creativity and speed.
The rock saw is so I can make handle slabs for this really nice handmade blank I was fortunate enough to receive. Lots of beautiful rock up here as well for future projects.

dlfleetw- I was inspired by your post. Good luck to you! Have fun!

thanks Doug, me too!

Well, she's on her way to Winlock! Sent via mail, so I'll likely have lots of time to fiddle with the handle before she returns.
Can't wait!
:)

December?!?! That's only like 9 months away! What do you think this place is Will, the express line???? ;)

thought they were on strike or protesting??? Something about bad economy, recession, and you bashing there work off the fence:confused::p

It wasn't a fence, it was and still is the 4" metal pipe that is part of my muscadine trellis of hell. It's just dented 4" metal pipe now.
