Uh, oh! Not a knife, yet.

I'm sorry to hear about your dented pipe, Will. Wrath of GOD or somesuch.
I'd really be interested in getting my hands on some of these ninja monkeys I keep hearing about. They could really come in handy, you're a lucky guy.
I'd like to hear how you came to acquire them, was it one of those flea market finds? Or were they imported at high cost and under the cover of night?

I'm afraid Canadian Customs won't allow the import of bladesmithing ninja monkeys to an individual. I'm sure if you wanted to become the Canadian distributor of trained ninja monkeys something could be worked out with my source at the Santuck Flea Market held on the first Saturday of each month, March through December :p Gotta get there early or all the good livestock is gone by 8 am or so. I wish I was kidding about the farm animals at the Santuck flea market. :(

i cant believe were disgracing Loriens wonderful thread / tutorial with this nonsense.....:barf:

Lorien please bring it back to reality...:D

Will....does tha santuck flea market got any possums for sale, and how much for you to ship them me prioritity , in a flat rate box, keep it small like a video box and just poke a few holes in for air.:p

They have possums... seriously. It's better than Wal-Mart at 2 am to see strange people. They also have a guy that sells knives made by the greatest knifemaker known to man. They're made out of files so you know if they cut steel they'll cut everything. The guards are brazed, yes, I said brazed, to the blade and since he doesn't heat treat them you get those purty colors as part of the blade design. He asked to see a belt knife I was wearing one day and told me while it was nice it wasn't as good as these knives for sale. He'd never heard of the W. Leavitt factory, I told him it was a small factory just South of Mobile and wandered off.

Lorien, you going to do a wrap on that handle? I'll send you some hemp unless you have a bunch already :p

If you can't bring us back to "realitity" then I'll settle for just reality. :p

realtitty sounds good:p
and no, I have zero use for mall ninja monkeys.
Will, I am going to do a wrap on this handle and if you have some spare hemp CORD, I be much obliged if you sent me some. I've had that stuff in mind for awhile, I think the color and texture would jive really well with the wood. Don't try sending that other kind of hemp, it usually doesn't make it much past the customs people. Besides, this is the land of plenty in that regard:p:D
And guys, don't worry about having fun in this thread. I'm amazed it's even gone on this long, seein as I didn't even know for sure that I was going to make a knife until I actually started doing it.

thanks, ya'll:D!

I'll get a little something done this week. Not sure what yet. You'll know when I do:).

speaking of rolling...
Got rolling on the handle today. Not much time for it, but I got a little done. I'm not going to go too crazy on shaping this handle until I have the blade back, but I did want to get it more or less hand-sized.

I'm not really happy with that big crack in my wood, but I think the wrap and tons of epoxy will nullify my concerns. We'll see. I am definitely going to put the knife to task and find out whether it falls apart or stays together.

I adjusted the ferrule and its seat to the handle and it's a nice tight fit. Maybe not Mayan masonry tight, but good enough for me;).

Next task will be doing something with the ferrule. I have a fondness for turtles and I love the indigenous art from this area, so I'll see what I can come up with.

I love turtles!! You're good to go.
Have you read, Year Of The Turtle, by D. Carroll?

always lookin for good books, thanks for the tip, Rolf:thumbup::)

turtles, always liked them, even more than possums, and hey ninja turtles would really give ninja monkeys a run for there money :)

so, a ninja turtle vs. ninja monkey theme then?

well I hate to admit it, but I'm getting cold feet on screwing around trying to either carve or etch the ferrule. Besides, I can't think of anything that wouldn't look 'tacked on'. I've looked all around and just can't think of something original. Perhaps I'll be inclined to embellish the ferrule once the knife is together, although I can imagine that wouldn't be ideal.

There is a nice chunk or two of abalone kicking around the homestead, maybe a menuki or inlay of sort sort would be neat.

So, what I'm going to do is learn how to blue steel, and do that to the ferrule and just finish it really nice. With all the darkness in the handle, it might be a nice balance between the bright blade and the stainless pin(s).

I always believe that less is more and that when there isn't anything left to take away, you're pretty much done.

I did a little work today, and learned that the wood I'm using polishes up really, really nicely. I'll be sad when I'm finished with this block.

This will be a good harvesting season for future projects. I'm especially going to look out for maple burls and maple in general. There ain't to many hardwoods out here, but I'm looking forward to the research of finding out what might be suitable:).

Check out the tree my buddy found the other day;
