Unsecure package ... Empty

just a thought , but I know a guy who works as some kind of USPS mechanic in the L.A , ca . area . He says there is crap all over the floors . Falls off the conveyors, etc. , and there's no way to connect to orig packages .

Always a good idea to use as much packaging tape and cushioning as possible. From my experience of working in shipping, there really is no such thing as packaging too well or carefully. (Within reason obviously, you don't have to build a wooden crate with steel bands for a pocket knife.) There was always stuff coming out of parcels and bags which were later discovered and then everybody was wondering what on earth they are and who they belong to.

Well, since you paid with paypal, you should be covered even if the seller doesn't reimburse you willingly. I'd give him a chance but if a new knife or the return of you funds is not done in a very timely manner, I'd file a claim with paypal. Don't let the time frame for filing a claim pass without filing one if you haven't been made whole.

BTW, I use a small town post office and they willingly tape those priority mail box with that clear PO tape that is really sticky and stronger than dirt. A few wraps of that and a thief has to steal the whole box, not just try to get into it.

Since Insurance was mentioned in an earlier post I would like for some of you
to address the following: Since it is probably illegal to ship an Automatic thru
the post office, even though it is done, how are you going to collect on the
insurance? Granted both parties could probably swear up & down it wasn't
an auto in the box. But what do you do if the box is found, the claim has been paid, Postal inspector opens box & presto finds an auto? This may sound far fetched but I don't think it is an impossibility. So is it a good idea
to insure an auto if going thru PO?

And hopefully he will learn from this,,,call me overprotective, but I always wrap duct tape all around my Priority boxes like a madman(better safe than sorry).

Duct tape on a USPS package?

'Not Acceptable' has been my experience...

Good call Bob, i mentioned this to CM last night.

I also agree that it is the seller's responsibility to get the package to the buyer.

He will learn to take the time to package properly.

I have sent thousands of packages with USPS Priority and have yet to have one show up opened or significantly damaged (knock on wood). But I don't just close the flap with a silent prayer and hope it makes it either.

It looks like in your case that there is a delivery confirmation tag on the box. If your carrier / clerk scanned it delivered you will not get paypal or most credit cards to issue a refund. This has happened to me and I have had a long talk with my carrier about scanning damaged or opened packages delivered before I have a chance to look at them (leaves on porch sometimes).

The seller can just say that the package was delivered and you are trying to defraud them with fake pictures. Luckily, as you say, you are dealing with a straight up person and they will surely make it right.

How can they be fake pictures? The note that the USPS left in the box is proof enough.

By the way, my experience is from the Northeast and hasn't counted since I moved away from there the last few years. I've also used USPS the most, much more than UPS and Fedex even less, to 'correct the sample, in scientific terms, but even so that's what I saw.

Maybe they know you're a LEO?

when i ship, i don't do so directly with the entity.

i go through a third party at a mail box center.

with the sebenza package, it was also a pita to get information and start the insurance recovery. first off, they made no attempt to conact me nor the receiver even though there was a shipping receipt in the box which was still in tact. they just took the ripped open box and threw it in a bin, iirc.

im only basing my practices on my experience. in the case of shipping expensive items, having lost one (two if my friend's gun is counted) makes the risk too high. prior to that lost sebenza, i had shipped based on a buyers preference, and had probably used ups no more than a dozen times.

since my usps experience has been 100%, that is my shipper of choice.

Was the box re-used? In my experience, those boxes with the built-in adhesive strip don't come open on accident and I'd hardly call that unsecured.

I had a package arrive empty once. The seller use a windowed envelope and didn't cover the window. I'm sure the Benchmade Black Class box was plainly visible through the window. The envelope had been cut open and the contents removed. The package was not insured, but the seller paid for delivery confirmation and since the P.O. gave him the confirmation after delivering me an empty envelope, he refused to help.

The box was brand new and the seller used no tape. The post office taped it up after putting their note inside.

Unless the box is stuffed there's really nothing behind the inner flap to press it against the sticky strip. Knowing this I wrap tape completely around the edge and also around the belly.

One thing I've seen that is very good is to securely tape the bubble wrapped item to the inside of the box before assembling the box.

In my not so humble opinion- if an item is so poorly packed that some one can poke a finger hole in the box and have the item drop out the shipper should be responsible for replacing the item.

$50 / $500 or more I pack an item to arrive safely. Over on Sigforum guys complain about the 60 pounds of lead bullets getting beat up in the flat rate shipping boxes they use. You need to pack an item so when their 60 pounds of lead bullets drops 3 feet onto your nice knife- that it survives.

Thieves don't think like you and me; and there are plenty out there. You can custom design a red stamp with those options on vistaprint.com for cheap; then you get a stamp that has the rollers for the date. Wallah, you can just claim every box was empty when you got it and put a couple of stamps on a piece of paper. A little far-fetched for most people to think of, but paypal probably sees it every day. Any way to cheat another human being.

Please understand that I am in no way saying you are anything but completely upstanding. But I had the same thing happen and all they kept saying was "Delivery Confirmation says it was delivered to you on <date>; and since it is your word against his on the contents you are the only one without any validation". I had the pictures as well, but they still let him keep my money and told me that they had no choice.

I once had a knife stoled from a package I mailed and it was delivered without contents. From that day on I add extra extra tape and bubble wrap the knife then tape the bubble wrap multi times. If you wanna steal something from a package I ship I'm make you work at it.

Who in the world packages a $130 knife that way?
You'd have thought they were sending you a ten-cent stick of gum.
Heck, I'd package a ten-cent stick of gum better than that.

On a side note, My six year old was standing over my shoulder this am and wanted me to click on CM's EDC video.

I should have known better.. My bad.

You're a pisser CM.

So delivery confirmation allows the denial of insurance or any claim? That is the pits :(

Sounds like a dishonest person could just drop a torn, empty box into the Post Office drop box with Delivery confirmation by buying postage at one of the kiosks. Viola it is delivered and the buyer gets stiffed.
