Useless knives

My "noblesse" is a pretty decent knife. Boker magnum is a bit hit and miss to be sure but certainly not "useless" (especially for the price).

Worlds worst lock combined with other useless features.

I hear if you devote your live to fixing the maker's mistakes you can cut the cheese with it but "Ain't nobody got time for that".

I had no issues with them or their locking ring.

Love all mine. Best cutters I have. Whittling, carving, etc

Here is one with a free hanging hair whittled. Easy to keep sharp. The lock is meant to keep it from closing on my fingers, which it does...it is not a fighting knife. Or a tactical knife....

Probably the most useful knives for actually cutting things I've ever owned.......and I've owned a lot...

That's not the exact one I was looking for but it's close enough. Yeah it can catch the sword but then what?

IMO it's more of a "fantasy knife" than anything else anymore.
It was for fencing/fighting. They were used back when sword fighting was still common. When you caught the sword in the teeth, you killed them with the sword you were holding in the other hand. Once a longer blade is locked in, it is actually hard to pull it back out while the user is twisting/putting pressure on it.

Looked through all my knives, that’s a fair amount. Let’s just say I could probably use a different knife each day of the year and never use the same one twice. Not a single one is useless. Some cheaper than others, some made from questionable materials but everyone could certainly cut thereby making it useful in some manner. I mean they’ll all cut and essentially, isn’t the function of a knife to cut?

I’ve got some novelty knives, some shapes like shoes, some shaped like a 57 Chevy. Yup I got a few Franklin Mint knives as gifts too but everyone I was able to put an edge on that will cut. It’ll dull too but that doesn’t make it useless, just high maintenance.

My question to you folks who have “useless knives”, why would you get one?

Another question is an art knife? Some of them could get pretty pricey. Ever seen a HH Frank Knife?

Is that a useless knife? Would you use a knife as beautiful as this for cutting? I woul, would you use it for prying something open?

Just because it’s useless to you, doesn’t mean it’s useless to someone else. Some folks enjoy a knife without ever cutting a thing, just the joy of of the knife itself.

I have knives that are primarily stress rocks/rub stones but they cut like a knife and calm me down too. ;).

To sum it up, I don’t think any knife is really useless. Ughly maybe but not useless. ;) I believe you have the right to buy any knife you like, it’s your money but inasmuch as you can buy what you like, I don’t have to like it.

Have been using these opinels since I can remember for everything from kitchen and food prep to fishing on the rocks or on boatsz and they have held up wonderfully.
The lock does its job and honestly, with a knife such as this the locking mechanism is barely necessary if so at all...

Any knife that sits unused and in mint condition in your safe is by definition a “useless knife”.
No it's not. By that definition, any knife that hasn't been sold yet is "useless." Any tool on a shelf in a home depot is "useless." The knife I have in my pocket right now is "useless." It's not actively cutting something, right?

You’v got it right! They are inanimate objects until the user picks them up and makes them transform into a now useful object. Anyway it was a simple comment meaning knives are meant to be used not sit on a shelf somewhere not being used for what they were made for. Edited as to not offend!!!

Whale dick cleaver folder with huge flipper tab in the way. The cutouts on the grip also look Useless.

I’m sure you can find something more “useful” in your life to apply your critical thinking too.

You are relatively new, and may have missed that, repeatedly, we have been asked by the mods to limit our discussion here to knives not members. Maybe you can apply that to your replies.

As for your claim that knives that sit "unused" are useless, I, like SpySmasher SpySmasher , disagree. A knife on a shelf that is admired and enjoyed has been used. Its is useful.

I think my original comment was spot on the thread topic, was it not? Maybe you should ask them for a job as a MOD and in regards to your comment maybe you should listen to yourself. Good day.

Your feelings about what knives are useless was on topic.

Your feelings about other members' capacity for critical thinking is not, and what we have been warned against doing.

Feel free to ignore my friendly advice, and good luck.

Not useless enough there is a usable blade, one continuous edge at that too. Design though is bad I give you that.

I believe it is "ditto" not "diddo". But, enough of grammar/spelling. An unused knife can be quite useful if/when one chooses to use it or just admire it. Insulting each other does NOT help further discussion and could very well turn forum browsers off. :( There are many superior intellect people on this forum who are humble enough not to denigrate others, please follow their example. Thank you.

Particularly when you are "into" knives enough (like most of us are), to appreciate the beauty of a functional design and realize that knife makers do much more than just crank out cutting tools - they are artists AND craftspeople.

Of course, de gustibus, and one is certainly free to feel that if a knife is not cutting something then it has no function. I just happen to believe that looking good is part of a knife makers' intent.
