Ivan51 deserves a full refund.
That Envelope is a Document Mailer as specifically stated in the packaging description on the USPS order page.

Poor choice of packaging for a knife regardless of how it was padded before sealing it up.

Man up and refund his money.

I was at the PO shipping a knife yesterday. Apparently, they were out of #3 boxes, which I normally use. So, the lady at the counter tried to pull out one of these document envelopes and suggested I ship in that. Needless to say, I just sucked it up and paid for the bigger box. This is the first time I've got to inspect one of these envelopes in person, and I've got to say... there's no way I would ship a knife in one. They thin, and flimsy.

I hear you. I ordered a wallet one time and they sent it one of those. The wallet was hanging half way out the gash in the envelope by the time it made it to the front door. I don't know how it managed to stay in the package at all. More heft and it would have been a goner.

The new soft envelopes that USPS offers for both Priority and Express are made of a special fabric that is extremely resistant. I tried to cut through one with a small SAK and had quite a hard time. The regular cardboard envelopes offer no protection at all.

It's not just the outer package, it's the packaging that counts. You need to wrap the item well and pack around it inside the box (or envelope  ) so nothing inside moves when you shake it.

Then imagine your package being tossed into a bin from several feet away, run through sorting machinery, falling off the moving belt and getting caught in gears. Boxes don't get caught in gears ...

Tyvek is tough but filling it with documents compared to putting a knife inside is the difference between a static load and the sudden shock of a hammer.

I did paypal and i tryed to dispute it but since it was not bought on ebay they said there is nothing paypal can do? i just contacted my local post office inspector and was told since it was not insured there was not much they can do. man ive never had to deal with this before:mad::thumbdn: pisses me off

Never ship a knife in an envelope.

You are missing the entire point. He can ship any way he wants, as long as he replaces whatever is lost. If the customer is willing to go to Hawaii he can go to small claims court and get his money. The sum is not large enough to hire a lawyer so the bad guy slides. This man has obviously never read the Commercial Code and has no idea that he has done wrong.

Once he takes your money it is his responsibility to get the knife to you. He has failed in his duty.

I agree.
It just seems strange to me that anyone would use one of these envelopes to ship a knife in.They might hold up to 4lbs if it was spread out like a shirt or papers but they will not hold it if it is a small dead weight. The priority boxes are free, they are a flat rate shipping.Win Win in my book.
The only time I have ever used a envelope was with an overseas deal,an envelope was 10.00 cheaper to ship.I put the addressed box in the envelope to save on the shipping.I figured if it did come out the box still has the correct info on it.
IMO the money should be refunded on this deal.

That's it in totality. One can ship in a tissue box sealed with paper masking tape but best be prepared to replace what does not arrive.

Could you imagine buying a $1000 item from Crutchfield/Best Buy/CompUSA/Dell/HP/Toshiba, etc. etc. whoever, who use USPS to ship. Then, only an empty box arrives, and with no insurance. Seller tells you to pound sand because they met their total responsibility by shipping it and once it left their hands the deal was done. You call your CC Company to open a dispute but they say "too bad so sad, seller presented proof they DID ship the item so you are SOL."
You call the Post Office who inform you that they are blameless.

So, Seller has your $1000 and you have nothing and that's OK?????

Nah, I did not think so..................REFUND THE MONEY!!! (Do the right/only thing)

He may not care today what becomes of this but his bad reputation will show up when googled for years to come.

Might just bite him in the butt one day, bad reputations can do that......................

Here is the top hit I got when I Googled Verpus (without the 77):

Verpus, adjective and noun, referred to a man whose glans was exposed, either by an erection or by circumcision...

At this point, if I were you, I'd hound him relentlessly. Send him daily e-mails, and if necessary, carefully worded, as in non-threatening, letters. As much as you might want to call him a few nasty things, don't do it, it won't help much.

Well said!
