Vertical blade play on sebenza? - Update

That being the case;

Well I'd rather give to charity than a community who argues over knife customer service for 9 pages.

By all means, please do.

Back on topic.

It's obvious to me that the CRK warranty is not as bullet proof as I once thought and it has discouraged me from trusting my knives to their service. Like it or not, these are expensive knives. Compare the warranty of other manufacturers in this price range and CRK comes up short.

I honestly have no idea how many edits it will take you to "complete your post" to your satisfaction, I responded to what you had written the first time.

The "rule they can't possibly enforce" is that they will only knowingly honor the warranty if you are the original owner of the knife, purchased through an authorized dealer or Chris Reeve Knives directly.

But, you already knew that, you're only here fanning the flames out of emotional immaturity.

Admittedly, you were done with the histrionics days ago, now you're just trolling.

Emotional immaturity?

I'm not the one making ad hominem attacks. Want to rethink the emotional maturity comment? That was rich!

I won't respond to you any further, so feel free to make some sort of inflammatory response to try and incite me into posting. Go ahead, you know you will!

Go ahead, take a little piece of out of context words from my paragraph long thread, I don't care.

To answer your inquiry, it's because I don't care about a picture next to my name

I'll post a sebenza sitting on the hood of the murcielago if you're soooo skeptical, I didn't realize that success = gold bladeforum membership

You've impressed us all with your money and success!

Seriously, I'm sure at least one person in here is impressed with this braggadocio..... Right? Anyone?

I think the myth of someone buying a used sebenza, sending it to the spa and peresto you have a new knife has just been broken. It's always been Buyer Beware but somehow we tend to forget that. Abused knives are never covered under any warranty at any price point nor are knives with mix matched parts or pimped knives. I believe Chris Reeve is a stand up guy with Great Product, now what happens after the knife leaves the factory is really up to the original owner or should I say owners. I will say this my 18 year old sebenza is as tight as some of my most recently purchased sebenzas, maybe it's because I am the original owner or maybe I just treat my knives with respect.

I can unfortunatly not send the knife back at the moment as I do not have the cash. I will use it till there might be a problem, but the knife still fnctions perfectly, no blade play. I do flick the knife sometimes, look at SoLo's videos, I do the same method. No wrist wacking the crap out of any knife.

Still no blade play and the knife has seen a lot of use.

To me, it all comes down to how dedicated you are to your customers. When you look at all the top companies in the country and what makes them successful, it's not the products they sell, it's the people behind them.

But experiences are not consistent, and the bigger you get, the less consistent they can be. Example: my CS experiences with Apple have been outstanding, but you don't have to look hard to find large numbers of really unhappy people.

Wolf. You do know that the warranty is supposed to only apply to the original purchaser. So that right there is grounds for not having your warranty honored.
When you buy a used knife there is no way of knowing how it was used or abused, parts swapped, etc.Looking at the picture you posted the lock bar has a gouge in it that I highly doubt is from normal EDC'ing. There could be more to the story of the knifes past that you were not aware about.
Very few companies have a "NO Questions asked Warranty." Sure it would be great but you cant fault a company for not having one.

I understand where you are coming from but I have seen and heard of stories were Mr.Reeve honored warranty on used knives to many people. If you do one person you must treat everyone the same. Its part of good buisness.

Also, the lock face was not gouged the heat treatment flaked off. The spot is perfectly flat except where the flaking is occuring. Its a hair off where the heat treatment was and that why theres a tiny blade play. Again I know the knife was not abused, it was only edc'd!!!

A knife company with a no questions asked warranty is kershaw. They by far have the best customer service.

All of the people complaining are mainly trying to argue that it should be perfect or instantly fixed because of it being 400+ dollars.

Well I'll be honest, to me 400 is nothing. So I'm not expecting it to be a god product, I'm expecting it to be good.

If 400 seems like an intense amount to you guys, stop buying them, and buy something you can afford to complain about.

Stop trying to argue that it should be this and that and that and this for 400, when a Lamborghini costs a quarter-million and is still no where near perfect, and has plenty of issues. (I know this for a fact.)

Money isnt the issue here Tim, but if $400 isnt anything to you Ill gladly take a donation.

Well?

Tripton, I think Tim616 took his ball and went home.

Besides, I have no interest in seeing his Sebenza on a Lambo. The guy could be a Valet for all we know. :D

I just posted a new thread I think everyone should read. This might be the issue instead of the lock face.

Sorry for bringing up a 2 month old thread but I felt compelled to share. I bought a brand new sebenza 21 about a year ago. When I recieved the knife it had up and down play. I sent it to CRK and they sent it back to me and told me there was no problem with it. After getting it back it obviously had the same problem as no work was done on it. I sent it in to them again and this time recieved and extremely rude phone call from Chris Reeve himself yelling at me about how I abused the knife. He told me that I surely abused the knife when I had not. He told me it would cost $185 (if I remember correctly) to replace the locking bar handle side and I decided to go through with it because I liked the knife. When I got the knife back, after I paid the money, my knife had a new locking bar and it still had blade play. I have since used the knife, but the whole experiance was disheartening and the play really irks me.

Hindsight is always 20/20 but that knife should have been returned to the retailer immediately, IMO. You said you bought it new and it had blade play, why would you keep it?

This is about reputation.

5000 good experiences mean nothing when there are 5 (warranted) bad experiences, especially those of the caliber that are being discussed here. Even if CRK was to fix all of the issues that have been brought up in this thread, the sour taste in my mouth wouldn't disappear.

When I recieved the knife it only had a tiny amount of play, but after about 3 weeks the problem worsened, that's when I sent it in. At first I wasn't sure if the amount of play I was experiencing was within spec. I would rather not name names as I believe the seller wasn't at fault and I have had good experiences with them in the past and since my problem.

I would also add that I am torn because I really like the knife, I still have it and use it (it is clipped to my pocket right now), but I really dislike the play and I want to get it fixed but I am concerned that if I send it in to CRK again that they will charge me quite a bit to fix it again.

To be clear, did you buy it used or new (originally I mean)?

I own four Sebenzas, one Zaan, and a hard user Mnandi. I do use the Sebenzas but have always known that they are not really hard use knives. The design is such that there is very little room for error in terms of wear before they experience issues. Now, a disclaimer is that I've used my large Classic for 5 years now with zero problems. These days if I really need to hard work/chopping I just use a 1095 based fixed blade.
