Views on TEOTWAWKI: US vs. Canadiens (& Others)

You can put me in the pessimistic, paranoid, no faith in the future crowd. I don't know that there will ever be a TWOTWAWKI situation here but if it happened I wouldn't be surprised.

Lots of us believe America, in its current form, is so perverted from its intended form, and so beyond hope of repair that it will take something very drastic to return us to our founding ideology.

I agree 100%. I'm so disgusted with what we've let ourselves become that I would leave this country if I could figure out where to go. I never thought I would ever say that but it's how I feel at present. The thing is, for all it's faults, it's still the best place at the moment IMO.

Is that a real question XMP? where are the hidden webcams?.... lol.

Of course its a real question. Its easy to say that you'll just handle things passively when very little is really at stake. I think your scenario is unrealistic because it doesn't mirror a situation where things of real value are at stake: your life, the life of your loved ones, liberty, honor, etc.

None of the issues related to the original question are just pancakes.

All joking aside... those last two are the ones that scare me the most. They tend to get really blurred between Altruism and Egoism.

See, I think that is the real difference in perspective: purely practical concerns versus attachment to abstract ideals (in the Jeffersonian tradition). I don't want to say that this is the stereotypical difference between Canadiens and Americans, but I do think traditional Americans (especially rural, southern, and western) are more inclined to fall into that last category than most other people groups.

I was busy yesterday, so I just got to this thread today. All I can say is wow: some of you put a lot of thought into your posts, and provide some real food for thought.

Just a few things that occurred to me as I was reading this thread.:

First of all is TEOTWAWKI: what is that? Yes, I know what it stands for, but what is it really? TEOTWAWKI could be something as large as a global disaster, or as small as a family catastrophe. Either way, it could be TEOTWAWKI for some folks, and either way — or something in between — it can’t hurt to be prepared for it.

Those who say “it can’t happen here (wherever your “here” may be) are in denial and living in La La Land. It has happened throughout history (Black Plague, anyone?), and it will happen again. It’s just a question of when — and what — it will be, how severe it will be, and how large it will be (family, regional, national, global). Many scenarios seem more likely here in the US, but our brothers and sisters in Canada — or Great Britain, for that matter — are not immune. I don’t care who you are, or where you live, It can’t hurt to spend a little time becoming prepared. I can’t predict the future... and neither can you.

Those who say it will happen here (wherever your “here” may be) are also living in La La Land: you can’t see the future any better than any of the rest of us. At least you have probably made some preparations for a SHTF scenario, and that’s a good thing, but you shouldn’t live with a constant fear of global collapse: it really screws with your head.

A TEOTWAWKI/SHTF scenario can happen but — with any luck — won’t. Being prepared — just in case — is not a bad thing, simply because IT CAN HAPPEN HERE.

Here, for me is San Diego, California: bright, sunny, mild temperatures: what could go wrong? Well, actually, it wouldn’t take much, really, to radically alter life here in sunny San Diego. A tsunami (unlikely, but possible) would do it; so would a large earthquake. Or — as someone who works for the local power company pointed out — an attack on the power grid would — excuse the pun — shut San Diego off. We have no water of our own: it has to be pumped in. Should the grid go down, there will be no food, no transportation, no communications, etc., etc., etc. Panic in the streets; people dying; a breakdown of society within days. TEOTWAWKI? Yep. Could it happen where your “here” is? Yep, it sure could. Oh, the cause might be different, but it really could happen to any of us anywhere at any time.

I don’t know about you, but I would rather be prepared as much as possible, and hope that nothing ever happens, than to be caught without any preparation at all.

I don't think who's tougher is the real question; the real question is whether there are things worth fighting over (and if so what are they). Sure you might not fight if some guy took your pancakes, but you wouldn't just sit there if he hauled your son away from you.

It wont be about " fighting... lip service.
It'll be about BOOOOOOOM.
MY PANCAKES ? BOOM !
In these times it'd improve the gene pool by eliminating a Bic lighter or a pancake thief.
If he asked ? He's probably be given it.For sure.Anyone would.

If he didn't ask, and chose to "sneakily steal it "? I'd waste the S.O.B.

I live and travel down this way. The old ladies and such get something.
The little kids get " Tell your mom or dad to come and ask me'
They seldom do.
BUT. I had a guy ride up on a bicycle and say " That was my son that asked".
He had one leg from the BS war in Nicaragua. The guy could pedal in these mountains with one leg like you cant believe.
I handed the dude the equivalent of $20.

I sent the bill to a Nazi , with Alzheimerz,. Ollie North.:mad
No. I wasn't paid.

Toucan really likes his pancakes... and has a strong sense of right and wrong.

Once the pancake thief realizes that you will just roll over and give in, why would he not come back and take your waffles and bacon as well? Why not all of it including the orange juice?

He can then make you dance like a puppet on a string by offering to "give" you what was rightfully yours in return for your total cooperation.

This is where the USA is today. And this is why we are quick to fight when someone starts eyeballing our breakfast!

The guy can have my pancakes but if he touches my porridge it's game on........

Sometimes you have to think in a different direction. What if the guy who is taking your pancakes is not even eating them... but giving them to an even bigger bully who is threatening him? If you read deeper into it only to find that he is actually targeting you to eat only your pancakes, then yes you are forced to take it further. If he is doing it to others as well, you have a greater chance of detering him as a group.

Taking action might stop the immediate threat... but it breeds revenge. When was the last time you got your but kicked and did not want to take revenge?

Pride can be as blind as Faith.

where i live, its pretty hard to get a registered firearm, and as such, i dont have any ammo or guns stockpiled.. i also dont have a whole set of BOB's laying around, ready for any eventuality, i dont even have a few months of food stockpiled... what i do have however is the knowledge to survive in the wild here for weeks-months on end, with nothing more than a knife. i know whats edible, i know where to try and find water, i know how to start a fire, i know how to make a bow, i know how to catch fish/crayfish/crabs.. because in my opinion, the ONLY way to be prepared for any eventuality is to have the knowledge needed to survive for an undermined period of time on nothing more than what you may have in your pockets.

id much rather be able to get 5 or 6 chickens than a rifle, and id rather a couple seeds to plant than a box of ammo...
You're in Barbados !
I don't think they have long term formulas for stealing the natural resources of other nations !
Plant some papaya and yard long green beans and be done with it !
Don't forget to stash a couple of cases of rum !

I can understand letting the thief have the pancakes if it serves a larger strategy of totally destroying the entire cabal of breakfast thieves so that revenge is not a concern.

One must keep in mind though that victory in future confrontations with the breakfast thieves might prove difficult to achieve without the yummy nutritious nourishment of the pancakes that were lost.

MODERATOR. Please warn me and delete first. I like the site.
What you posted was written by a brainwashed, glassy eyed, idiot that was trained to say this type of thing.

Yeah, the guy is pretty much a loon, even if the idea that going it alone is unrealistic.

Further, it doesn't really explain much as far as the OP was concerned. Just more evidence supporting the OP's observation. We have several of our own who seem to take the apocalypse as a foregone conclusion. I stand by my earlier theory.

My son had to sit in the corner at school because he felt the toy he brought to school was HIS toy. He was right... but he was worse off for fighting. I have been trying to teach him that things are just "things" and having fun is more important than being right. Sometimes being right sucks... ask my 4yr old.

Mag
It seems you are teaching your son that his belongings, even though they are only "things' have no value and that it’s ok to let people take from him, teaching him to be a victim. Right is right and wrong should punished regardless of "fun". You let someone take your pancakes, then where is the line drawn where do you stand up? Your son’s breakfast? Your family’s car? Your daughter’s innocence?
Or is this just redistribution of toys instead of wealth like the U.S. is trying to do now...

that's how I live my life.

You are not allowed to start a fight.

But you are allowed to end one.

And I really don't give a sh** how big the guy is. I will use whatever at my disposal to win INCLUDING my brains.

I have had my butt kicked by a bully before.

On a larger scale, My life you may take, my integrity...NEVER
