W2 Tool Steel 2" Rd

to get those crazy hamons what the steps? u guys using water or oil. i know w 2 is water quenched but dont some do fast oil? Or are u guys using brine? Not if it will make any difference but i have access to r/o deionaztion water. if brine just reglar salt. im sure i could search this out buy way easier to get from the experts here.

Parks #50 quench oil. Give the best and most consistent results. Dakota it does take a little practice to get a good hamon. It took me almost 6 months before I was happy with what it was giving me. Try a few times and see what happens. Look over some of the o;d posts from Don's previous sales and glean as much info as possible then ask more questions if you are still having trouble or even before. Another key thing usually only 1/8th inch thick on the clay is all that is needed. Good luck

I checked and I do in fact have every size other than this new 2 inch stuff....lol

Now that I have 12 bars of the 2" I have every size too. The others are just hidden inside the 2". (I LOVE MY HAMMER, I LOVE MY PRESS, I LOVE MY HAMMER, I LOVE MY PRESS...):D:D

Looking at the bundles, I bought heavy on the 7/8 and 1 1/4 sizes. I fifured that 7/8 would be the ideal size for 7-8 inch fighters and 1 1/4 would be good for decent sized bowies.

I wish I had started earlier and got a few of the smaller sizes at least the 3/4. Oh well life goes on... I still have the hammer and press....

Dakota, as Chuck said, a fast oil is recommended (Park's 50 is the fastest), thin clay and lots of practice.

Joe, I thought you had every size under 2''. :) You need to get that press going.

Chuck, carry on and keep up the good work

I'm not sure if you had any 1 1/2. I don't have any as far as I can tell. It looks like I doubled up on the 7/8 and 1 1/4 and of course, I bought that extra 9 feet of 3/4 from you at Batsons and those 3 flat bars you pounded out.. 2 feet of each of those round bars are long gone and I have I 7 inch peice of the flat left....lol. I doid one balde from 7/8 and ended up with tendonitis. Everything else I have done so far has been flat or 3/4 round.

I had really bad tendonitis but it went away, but then I did get my press up and running just before it healed up. When I did my JS test I had an elbow brace on both arms. Not fun..... Take care of it. mine was so bad i could not pick up my arm for a week.

I wasn't able to forge for 2 months. Now i always use one of those velcroed straps with the little gel pad. Works like a charm, but I keep it pretty tight when forging, so I get Popeye arm worse than usual...lol.

Hey Don

I sent you an email with a picture of a kitchen knife set I made from your W2 - came out pretty good I think, although my foto skills are

I used 1" round and 3/4" round - the 1" is definitely a workout to do by hand!!!

Hi Bill,

I got the photos, great looking knives. I love good kitchen knives, been wanting to make a few lately.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks,

Don

Man I hope you are making good money on this W-2. I have a new appreciation for the time and PITA it is to wrap this stuff up. Not to mention cutting it into 11" lengths to save us money. I have only gotten 3 box's ready and don't want to do any more...... I will be ordering 2 more box's from you right away to replace 2 of the ones I sent out. Then will be wanting 2 more after that, probably after Blade...

Thanks again for all your work

Chuck, lot a work ye? :)

For 8 days, 8 hours a day after starting this thread, I cut, wrapped, boxed and shipped W2. That was avg 5-6 boxes per day. I'm down to 1-2 boxes per day now and can work on knives a bit.

Hopefully the orders will be slow from now to Blade, I got to make knives :D

Thanks Man!

Don Thanks for all the work put into this. For those who took me up on the offer of the trade your 1.25" is either in the mail or will be on monday. For those who were waffling, SORRY I have withdrawn the offer. It is such a pain I will be keeping the stuff I have and ordering what I need from Don.
