W2 Tool Steel 2" Rd

cant wait
i hope to get a few razors out of it and maybe a kitchen knife or 2:eek::D

did you post a heat treat for this batch or will i be playing a bit for what i need

Butch, you may modify this to your needs but here's what I do.

After normalizing 3 times, I soak for a few minutes at 1450f in my forge (if elec. oven is used, soak for 10 to 15 minutes), then quench in Park's 50.
I temper at 450f for 1 hour twice, for a Rc hardness of 61 to 62.

This should get you started.

Thanks,
Don

I am not currently going for those funny stains on my blades like Don does...lol. What I do is spheroidize anneal for 2 hours at 1250 (just used foil for the first time and it works much better than PBS which tends to flake when left in the oven for that long) and cool like any annealing job. Then I put it in the oven and bring it up to 1475, let it soak for at least 5 minutes and then stick it in the Parks #50 for a full quench of everything except the tang. I have found that if you gently agitate the blade for about 10 seconds or maybe a bit less, it comes out still above the magic 400 degree number so you can straighten out any little warps to the tip. I do it by hand on the anvil using tongs holding the tang and the welding/kiln gloves that came with the Paragon. I temper in the Paragon for 2 hours at 475 once the oven gets up to temp. I have no idea what the hardness is...lol.

seeing how im used to tempering at 400 or 425 that works for me
the kitchen knives and razors shouldn't have much problem at 62 (least for the guys that will be buying the kitchen knives) i ll have to test the razor RC to see what works best but the kitchen stuff should be fine (running cpm154 at 62 no problems ) those guys like there knives thin and hard as hell and are not worried about a little micro chipping

You can ignore everything else that anyone as said as long as you buy Park#50. Even a semi-fast 11 second oil like Tough Quench will likely not fully harden the thicker parts of a big W2 blade.

Good info Joe, I forgot about the sub-critical anneal. Is good and I sometimes do 1300f for 1 hour.
At 475f, you should be at 60-61 Rc.

Butch, I love very thinly ground kitchen knives. The smaller the carbides and finer the grain of the steel, the better these thin blades will perform. W2 is perfect for these types of blades IMO.

al i can think of right now is making a veg. cleaver and gettign some kind of unearthy hamon on it but that 4x8 blade size and thin stock will not be fun least i ahve a kiln and parks 50 to try with

Are you still peddling this stuff? How about in July? I believe I've tapped out my metal budget until then.

Hi Phyl, yes I'm still peddling and will have this 2" W2 available for a good while. I have shipped a bunch (at least a ton) to you part of the world. So the Postal service knows the rout. :)

Folks, I've been too busy getting ready for Blade lately and have let the W2 selling slide a bit. After the show next weekend, I'll be ready to start loading up the Postal service with these heavy boxes again :D

Thanks!

Back from the Blade show. What a Super Show!

I've had a few emails from folks asking if I still have W2. Yes I do, I have around 3500 lbs of the 2" left, out of 8000 lbs at the start of this thread.

When it's gone, it's gone for good. So let me know and I'll be glad to get some out to ya.

Thanks guys,

I know, probably too hot to forge but this W2 will most likely be all gone when it cools down later this fall, so stock up now :)

Thanks,

Folks, I'll be out of town and out of touch from July 10th through the 17th. Will answer emails and be able to ship steel when I return.

Thanks,

Well, folks, the hot weather is almost over, time to start forging again. Actually, it's been very nice here this week.

I have a good bit of 2" W2 left but this is the last and I don't expect it to last long once cool weather finally rolls around.

I can't find any more this size or smaller. So when this is gone, I will most likely be out of the W2 business. Unless y'all want larger sizes :)

Thanks,

Don I'm gonna want a minimum of 120 pounds once I get some more money together. I hope you will still have some in mid september. :)
