Walking Dead : Daryl's Season 5 knife (Sort of) Identified.

It would definitely take a Zombie Apocalypse to make a roll full of Gerbers exciting. But... I remember the days before online knife-shopping, and Gerbers WERE exciting, to me. Those were dark times.

First blade I ever bought was a Gerber Gator JR from Walmart , followed by a Bear Grylls Folding Sheath knife. Dark Times indeed.

Gerbers are the gateway drug to more informed blade purchases...

Before Fiskars purchased the company in the 90s, Gerber was making many good knives. They would have been comparable to Al Mar, SOG and Blackjack and a step up from the run-of-the-mill Buck and Schrade stuff.

Right now, they are lower than the usual Chinese flea market specials. Just overpriced junk.

nothing. they mustah sold out or discontinued it. Even a search for "Daryl" (purses and shirts) and "knife" (cheap mall ninja "tactical" knives under $20 and probably over priced by at least $60 at that) and a katana (a wall hanger, no doubt) for $275 is all I could find.

I guess it is a good thing I've never missed an episode of that show. Never watched it, either.

In an interview Norman Reedus gave, he admitted that after the filming of every season, he steals a crossbow from the prop department and takes it back home with him.

Listening to his various interviews, he seems to have a bit of a kleptomania problem; he stole a walker's head, he stole Rick's beard, so he probably stole the Busse too, and AMC didn't feel like paying for a new one.

There is another explanation: the Busse is still at Terminus. Carol got the crossbow, Rick's watch, and several other items, but she was on a clock and apparently didn't have the time to search for it, or a Terminus member already had it.

I think I'd rather have a sharpened hunk of steel broken off from a bed frame than that piece of crud. At least then I'd know I'm using an untrustworthy hunk of junk, and not some knife-shaped piece of franken-metal that might or might not hold together when I need it to.

It's almost like the TWD has hired the Duck Dynasty marketing team to come over and run things. Jeez.

I spoke with the guys at Southern Grind about this project.

They were given the design to reproduce in their machine shop. It is simply a prop knife, NOT a Southern Grind knife.

When they found out that it was a near identical copy (profile wise) of the Team Gemini, they immediately took action and voluntarily backed out of the project.

Zac Brown and his crew are a class act.

Thanks for clearing that up Bossman!
I'm actually a big fan of both Zac and TWD. Never owned a Southern Grind knife, but I have heard nothing but good things about them. I've liked Zac Brown Band's music for quite a while.
I've always been a very staunch advocate for Busse knives (duh!), and will continue to be as long as I draw breath. I didn't know what to think when I saw that knife other than I didn't like it.
Anyhow, thanks again Jerry for clearing that up, and a virtual toast to you sir. Salud!
I think I just might crack this and have a glass or three, or 5... (Sorry Mr. Busse, I'm fresh out of Carling Black Label!)

From what I know of him and his company, this is what I was expecting.

I am confused and probably just misread a bit.

Let me try to rephrase it to make sure.

The movie's prop guys made this prop knife design (heavily inspired by the TGLB) and then asked Southern Grind to make some real steel workable copies of this prop knife to be sold to Southern Grind customers?
And Southern Grind didn't realized instantly that it's a TGLB?
Hmmmmm

Even my wife and kids know that blade from 30 feet away. ;)

 Glad to hear it. Always liked ZB and saw him in concert a couple times here. Thanks Jerry.

Well, it's good o know that ZB and company came clean and decided to do the right thing, but it would be interesteresting to know the timeline when all this went down. Between this thread and the mirrored one over on the Busse sub-forum the conversations at least a month or old.

In other words, without sounding too cynical, I find it a little hard to believe that no one in the Georgia-based Southern Grind shop watched and was a fan of the Walking Dead show before they got this interesting "prop" to copy. I've seen enough of these deals to see that the Boss Man's just takin the high road. Well done Jerry.
