Wanna Help Design The Busse "Woodcraft" Knife????

Not that you should COPY it, LOL... but the handle on David Mosier's small Trigonaut is very comfortable in the hand... I'd love to see something close to it on the NukeNessmuk. :D

The maroon/black handled knife on the LEFT:

One of my favorite, "go-anywhere" blades is this lil bit o'cheese. A bit of modification in the blade shape for a Nessmuk style but the grip is perfect. Please, please, please use the "mini-mag" contoured grips of this one again! A spine thickness of 0.1552" and double cut. :D

For a nessie style, I suppose you could lose the choil (though I like it on this blade A LOT) and even lose a bit of blade length with the edge gained from the lack of choil.

(No, this pic isn't mine. Mine is much more well used than this one! :D)

That's mine ;)

Sorry for throwing up a bunch of Rats for comparision, but here is my idea of a Bush knife:

Bog Dog II - Concept

(.... my submission for a Swamp Rat - Bush Knife!)

.... Or Busse Bush Knife.....

I think the Bog Dog has certain elements for a good bush knife. Mainly in weight and blade-shape.

The Bog Dog had a blade shape similar to the SJTAC, but smaller.

My concept for a great Bush knife would combine some of the Bog Dog characteristics and the HRLM/Ratmandu handle, but a little slimmer and lighter in the handle.

IMO, if a Bush knife is going to have a choil, the choil should be in tight and close for a more comfortable grip and help bring the blade edge closer to the reguler grip.... or no choil at all. Unfortunately, it is my opinion that this means eliminating the Talon hole.... my opinion....

The radius of the handle on the Ratmandu/HRLM handle is in good and tight behind the guard. I think this is a better radius than a shallow radius that makes it hard to get your grip up on the blade.

I don't feel that a Bush knife needs to have a monster thick blade, but obviously that is debatable.

Here are the dimensions of the HRLM and the Bog Dog:

HRLM.....= 9.0 ounces; .190" thick; 4.13" blade; 9.3" oal
Bog Dog = 5.0 ounces; .140" thick ; 4.75" blade; 9.56" oal

I propose the Bog Dog II have dimesions close to:

Bog Dog II = 7.5 ounces (?); .175" thick; 4.375" - 4.5" blade; 9.4 - 9.5" oal

Key features include:

- Similar handle to HRLM/Ratmandu, but slightly slimmer handle proportions - height and thickness

- Blade shape similar to Bog Dog, but with slightly less drop than older Bog Dog and slightly more belly, but still pointy - see comparison pick of Concept Bog Dog II vs. older Bog Dog - or basically a smaller version of SJTAC blade.

- Skeletonized tang - to save, weight, improve feel and balance and will still be plenty strong!

- Choil in closer for better comfort when choked up and more blade edge.

Under HRLM and above old Bog Dog and Ratmandu:

... notice the cut-out areas have rounded inside corners to help reduce weak-spots! ...... I assume Busse has the blanks laser cut (????).

I like these two concepts:

BusseWoodcraft1.jpg

Busscraft.jpg

But, along the lines of what I have mentioned before..... the Talon Hole sacrifices a functional choil.

If you delete the Talon Hole, you can have a choil and have the blade in close.

Compare:

Busse-BusscraftTalonHolevs.Choil.jpg

After making a modification to the Woodcraft I's choil,..... I also tinkered with the handle thickness near the little finger / pommel area.....

I don't know the dimensions of the Woodcraft, so I just scaled it to the same size as my Bog Dog Concept.

Here is another interesting comparison:

SwampRat-ConceptBogDogIIwithWoodcra.jpg

I like the penetrator tip on yours.
I prefer the lanyard hole at the bottom of the pommel.

I like both blade profiles.
Your blade profile is slightly better for drilling - especially with the penetrator tip.

The Bog Dog Concept has a little more belly for improved skinning.
Both good in my book.

I prefer the closer in choil and the full height convex grind.

I have a slight preference for the thumb ramp, but for me the thumb ramp has to be just right or I would rather not have one.

The Swamp Rat HRLM and Ratmandu have it just right for me.

Most other don't work for me.
The ramp on the SJTAC, and the Extravaganzaaa Dog Skinner and many others are off for me. My thumb falls right on the peak which I find annoying.

I own something like that from Jens Anso. It is a pretty useful multi-purpose blade for as large as it is. Jerry could do worse than to adapt it to about a 5" blade.

Here's what I would love to see:

BusseBushcraftKnife0001.jpg

The top one is a classic drop point without a gaurd, which I feel just gets into the way. I feel this pattern is the most effective for utility/bushcraft use. (My Fav.)

The Middle one is the same as the top but with a small guard.

the top two have dimensions (approx.) of:

Overall length: 8.5"
Blade length: 3.75"

And the bottom one is a pretty standard drop point shape which is a little shorter and stockier than the top two.

The bottomb one has dimensions (approx.) of:

Overall length: 8.2"
Blade length: 3.75"

here's a pic of my fav. (guard less) with a background:

Thanks for the opportunity! :D

I like that one but still would like to see the Nessmuck.

and the folder...

There you have it Jerry (the Great Genie of the magic INFI lamp!) our Three Wishes
Folder
Axe
Kukri

and the Nessmuk, don't forget the Nessmuk...

I've been watching this thread from the beginning and I think the no choil Bussmuk wins hands down for the nessmuk design. I would definitely buy one of those. As for the Busscraft that Samek designed I would only make two changes to it. I would make it a no choil knife and I would move the talon hole up so that the bottom of the talon hole would be in line with the blade edge. As for edge type I think the busscraft should be a scandi grind.

If there's going to be a Busse Bushcraft Knife, I don't see any reason at all why it should have a choil. I would suggest leaving that part out.

these all look great. Since Busses are extra ordinary I am adamant that the "busscraft" knife be thin and that the "bussmuck" would be cool. I am also spamming the busse kukri!

I am on the warpath against small/medium sized knives with a choil. These knives should have a handle that allows you to USE THE HANDLE for small chores...not a choil. A traditional bushcraft knife is not a chopping tool. By all means, bring us more choppers... just not labeled as bushcraft knives.

I couldn't possibly agree more even if I was threatened with decapitation should I refuse to agree more! The handles are for gripping the knife - the blade is for cutting stuff with. The choil doesn't belong on a small to medium knife (which I'd define as anything between 0 to 5 or even 6").

Nice design - simple and efficient...yet attractive!

Jerry did some recurve blades a while back...but I too would love to see a Busse Kukri.
