Wanna Help Design The HOG SAR Knife ? ? ? ? . . .

I know Jerry doesn't want drawings, but this is more to flesh out what I was talking about as far as BIBB modification. I may just order a custom like this. :D I am not suggesting the swoop run from the handle to the tip rather have it as it was, just make the spine straight in line from where it would have been before the spine was relieved.

You pros will pardon my chop job. I half arsed a little penetrator tip on her.

I would dig this blade on River8's handle though.

I like that a LOT  I have always loved the looks (and perceived function) of the BIBB

Progunner--thanks for the thoughts and doing some photochop work--definately enough to get the point across.

I agree with everything Dunner has said. He along with River 8 know their stuff. I don't have near the SAR experience they have. I have only participated in seven SAR missions 2 rescues and 5 recoveries. I do have a few opinons about an SAR style knife though. I don't think we need serrations or a recurve style blade. I think a straight spine with edges sharp enough to get sparks from a ferro rod and batoning is needed. If it is a larger blade 6.5" or better will need a choil, but with a shorter blade specially if it is 4.5" to 5" it does not need a choil. I want as much blade for cutting as possible in a smaller blade. I also like the idea of having a pommel where it can be pounded. A smaller blade needs to be around .2 thick. A larger blade somewhere around .25-.3 thick. I really would like a full height grind with a convex edge.

I must confess that I have had several Busse Combat blades in the past, but have sold them all. I do have several Swamp Rats still. However, if this goes the way I hope and we listen to those who really know the SAR field like Dunner and River 8 I will for sure have another Busse Coombat blade. I wish we could get SARHound in on this thread as well. Thanks for listening to everyone's ideas Jerry!

Here is all the stuff I like to carry when I go out. I figure that if I get lost some SAR types are going to try real hard to find me.

Trailside great to have you in the discussion. I have been training (goofing off in the woods) extensively with River 8 for about 4 years on but only on the team for the last two. It sounds like we have been on about the same number of missions and your experience sounds more rich (for lack of a better word) than mine in ways. I have been deep in a knife addicted state for all these years though and think about the "ideal" knife constantly so I'm glad you like the ideas ;). SARHound would be great to hear from for sure. I miss the SAR guys from RatChat. Have made some great friends through that forum including River 8, Bruce Wayne, 360Joules and others

8 on the other hand has BOUCOUP SAR experience that we are lucky to draw from. River 8's the man!

I do like the Stripper sized/shaped blade with the changes you mention Progunner. No swedge, no recurve for this kid :)

That would be great, a ripper w/o the recurve.

If the BIBB were flat I think I would like it better, I am not as big an upsweep fan. Course it could grow on me.

LOL Tony! My team would find you for sure. Fear not! You are well geared

5 to 5.5", .22 blade, like a smaller SJT, very slight recurve drop point. serrations on the bottom like ST ripper, hammer pommel instead of skull crusher.

I would see spine serrations (ala NARK) as a definite no no in terms of SAR. It would seem that there would be a good chance of using a knife like this around people. More specifically "in close"; cutting rope, webbing, harnesses, or even opening a pant leg. Single edge makes this much easier. Not to mention safer. A slight drop point would also facilitate this.

And I know you'd typically have specialized tools (EMT shears) for this but you never know. Just my 2 cents.

Here's my recipe:

  • DCH handle
  • blade to handle relationship like the HOG Muk, but with the ricasso extending further forward and down to serve as an integral guard (keep the index finger away from the sharp corner of the blade edge plunge)
  • 6"+/- blade of 0.22" or thinner stock (personally, I vote for 0.187")
  • blade tip profile similar to the original satin jack or CPABA
  • straight edge and spine

4" blade
Titanium Framelock
Yellow G10 scales
INFI

SAR FOLDER !!

The new DCH handle in Yellow G-10, Orange G-10, Natural Micarta, or Green Micarta with a choil-less 6" drop point in Satin.
