*Warning* Virus Alert ...For those who use Photobucket.

Hey JAXX did the Geek Squad guy say what registry key he fixed and how?

No he didn't. I meant to ask, but forgot. It was only one, IIRC, but he literally typed it in by hand from memory once he gained access through a bootable CD. everything he did was done right in front of me accross the counter. Must be nice to have those skillz...! :) I gotta go look at printers sometime this week, so if I see him there, I'll ask.

Sounds like you got lucky - from most reports, most 13 year old video game players are more talented computer technicians than the typical best buy employee. :D

I thought the reports said most 13 year old video game players are more talented computer technicians than most people over the age of 14.:D;)

It's still there. I got a trojan warning today from Windows Defender.

Thanks for all the info in this thread!

Question: I've been in and out of Photobucket many times in the last few days, and I've not had a single warning, and remain bug-free. Are your photo albums set to Private or not? Just wondering if that might have something to do with it.

If you have Adobe Acrobat, check to make sure that you have the latest version, and definitely do the same with Adobe Flash. Once you have those updated, you should be OK... With Adobe Acrobat, it's been posted in the Norton Symantec forum that it's better to completely uninstall your old copy of Acrobat if it's not the current version and then just re-install the latest version off the Adobe site. I've been back on Photobucket quite a few times since my problems with no further problems or alerts so far (although I am still a bit gun shy!). Also... Run those full scans to make sure the Trojan viruses didn't get through. :)

Also, you may want to give Photobucket a heads-up. The more people report this, the more they can do to try and nail the problem down. If you do report it, try to remember exactly what you scrolled over when you saw the warning, especially if it was one of those expanding advertisements (and if so, which one) as these run on Adobe Flash.

Definitely run that scan, and I wouldn't wait to do it.

Also... Microsoft has issued a patch for IE today, so if you're not on auto updates and you are running IE7 or IE8, definitely grab that too.

please look into firefox or any of other
browser programs other than IE.
much more secure.

I also got hit by this (currently using The Wife's machine)
I had service pack 3.
I use Foxfire for everything but listening to one radio station and netflix.
I did upload some pics quite recently to photobucket to sell some knives. (Glad I now have money to pay for repairs, /sigh).

The problem arrose with the same black box etc. described above.
Updated and ran spybot and things went down hill from there. I then had the 'loading personal preferences, windows for 1/4 second, saving personal preferences' loop.

The fake security software that kept popping up, about every 30s, was called, "Internet Security 2010"
Ctrl-Alt-Del, would not work, it said I no longer had administrative privledges to use that fuction.

Loading the last working configuration did nothing.
Safemode did nothing as did most other options on the setup starup.

I reloaded windows from scratch and am currently unable to use any of my external hardware and most of the software now wants fresh registration codes. Oh joy.

Might just have to follow the above and take it in, /sigh. I wonder if there is a new plain of hell for these people.

Ouch... :( Sorry to hear, man. If you didn't reformat before loading Windows, hopefully you still have access to your HD files or can recover them all. (ALSO... IF YOU HAD ANY BANKING or CREDIT CARD info stored, or used them recently to make online purchases... please do yourself a solid and get in touch with your bank and CC companies to cut off unauthozed access). I lost no data, just the ability to run Windows profiles. and access the data. Did the attack happen while you were on Photobucket? If so, they will want to know as they are trying to put a stop to this any way they can.

If you didn't notice my post(s) about Adobe Acrobat or Flash, please check 'em down the thread as this may allow further exploitations until updated.

Best of luck to you, and yeah, there should be a 'special' place in hell for these $4!#heads... :grumpy:

For anyone's interest, the final list of malware that I was attacked with in no specific order:

Trojan.Zbot
Trojan.FakeAlert
Trojan.Blotter
Trojan.Virantix
'Downloader' (2 were found on the same scan & Norton labeled them as a virus)
Win32.Agent.pz

It took 4 different scanners to find them all.

+1 on http://www.kaspersky.com/ better than norton, but i prefer and have an imac, a whole lot less problems and expense in the long run!! they sell them at best buy as well.
+1 on what mustard man said about the geek squad, best buy i really like.
the geek squad is a good theory, but you must take your chances...

Well, I am back up on my computer. It is a seven year old machine and I was crushed for drivers for, well, everything. I am pretty much having to re-install anything and everything I want to use. The Geek Squad offered to find drivers but wanted $140 to do so. I declined. The USB was still accessible so I downloaded a set of basic drivers from Dell.com.

I was not on photobucket at the time the computer started to, noticeably, die. I am pretty sure my adobe software was not the most up to date.

I mainly wrote the above to let people know that the problem can occur regardless of being on Foxfire or having SP3. Computers seem to have a special ability to aggravate me faster then just about anything else.

The conspiracy theorist in me is starting to believe these viruses, etc., have the financial backing of a computer manufacturer as a way to force people to upgrade. It is hard to think of any legitimate reason beyond this for someone putting them together. The line at bestbuy was pretty impressively long.

Just noticed another attack attempt while posting pix from Photobucket a few minutes ago...

Trojan.Pidief.G (blocked by Norton)

...Well, time to run Malewarebytes to be sure it didn't breach the firewall. :grumpy:

Yesterday I had five or six IE pages open, including Photobucket. When I clicked to change pages in PB, there was an immediate threat warning from McAfee regarding a blocked Trojan attack. Shut them all down and ran a full scan, seems to be clean. I can't be certain if it came from PB, but it would be my leading suspect.

Is Photobucket doing anything about this?
