We were all new here once

There is a sub-forum here specifically for identifying knives. If you look under the page counter at the lower right hand corner of the screen, you will see a "Quick Navigation" box with "General Knife Discussion" in it, click on that to activate the scroll-down menu, scroll down just a little until you see "Bernard Levine's Knife Collecting" and click on that. That's the place to get knives identified. But just so you know, unless you are a paid "gold" member here you aren't allowed to ask how much a knife is worth.

Got it, thank you so much.

I remember about 2 summers ago, when i first came to having money for knives, i spent a good 100$ at BUDK and i kick myself in the ass to this day. Coulda bought a griptilian with that or an 0350 blem. Instead i bought like 8 dull, poorly crafted knives. Always willing to learn new things and give out advice! Love learning about knives man, really baffles me some of the things i come across. Considering im 16, id like to imagine i know a little much for my age about knives. Great post!

Hello everybody,
At first, please excuse my "bad" english, but I usually speak French. I live in Belgium.
I'm 66 years old and retired. So, I don't work anymore and I have time enough to enjoy my collection of knives.
My favorite knives ? US WWII combat knives.
I hope to learn on this forum.

I am new to the forums but have about 7 years of knife experience my first blade i got when i was six it was some china 420 stainless piece of junk.

Are you making knives or culturing pearls in your vagine? If the newb shit gets out of hand, have a subforum or sticky thread on general Q&A, Links, annoying questions that will be answered regardless of how many times the questions been asked in the past.

You can redirect new members to the area, and force readership. If they post dumb shit outside said area, mods can redirect... If they refuse to abide by those standards, then flame on!!! Fresh blood is the future of these crafts, but some people are dumb shits on purpose, and need to be weeded out for the collective good.

I'm not going to lie, the forum layout is a bit complicated even to the seasoned forum member... I assume the perks of paid membership enable easier surfing? If that's so those with general free membership should be given the proper means to post, receive necessary guidance and attention, and hopefully their experience will encourage them to pay dues... If people lack communal cohesion and/or a sense of solidarity, they're more likely to move on with their lives... away from our already eroding craftsmanship culture...

food for thought.

SinePari, some good advice there, but guess what? We already have stickies and announcements with information for new members. We have the FAQ with our rules, and several moderators have links to all that in our sig lines.

We have Tech Support for questions on Bladeforums procedures, and moderators do routinely move posts and explain where they should go.

We've been here for years, and are used to new members needing time to fit in.

Great post. I'm a newbie but my friends would say I'm an expert. So with that said I still ask newbie questions here and I love how much knowledge is gifted back.

Awesome! As a legitimate nooberwitz I had no clue, and haven't fallen upon that thread as of yet... No worries though, sometimes even a blind squirrel finds an occasional nut...

To the forum; my apologies for language...

I have good intentions but lack eloquence and tact... I'll just exclude myself from these threads...

I'm new to serious knife collecting. I like many other people got some cheap knives because they looked cool and quickly found out how those cheap, cool knives are almost impossible to sharpen. I have wore some nice diamond hones to useless status. I have started buying better knives. I have not gotten to custom knives yet but I will. It's just a matter of money. I am having some difficulty with abbreviations though. Does anyone have a thread they can point out to me that will help with the abbreviations. thanks

Welcome. As for the knife abbreviations, feel free to start a thread and ask about them here in the General Discussion forum. The members here will be happy to decipher any abbreviations you want to know about (no one's going to give you a hard time for not already knowing them). Heck, I've been here over ten years and sometimes I see an abbreviation get used that I don't know.

Hi there,

new guy here as well, from far away too (Germany).
For years I had one EDC Knife (Buck Alpha Dorado 2006 with dark scales), but then some stupid politicians made up some new knife-laws that makes EDC'ing it illegal around here.
I started looking for alternatives and got hooked since ;)

Keep it sharp,
Nal0n aka Bernd

Thank you for this affirmative post. I have never had a negative experience here, but hey, I haven't been here long.

Sincerely,

A Newbie

Some my first posts here definitely make me do a face palm when I look at them today. Even after 3 years on this forum I'm still very much on the learning side of the spectrum. A lot of what I've learned here has influenced my taste in knives. I went from "tacticool" to utilitarian. My favorite knife is still the rift, it just has a plain satin blade instead of a black serrated one now ;). I want to thank everyone here who has helped me and I hope to continue to be part of the community long enough to be able to help others. My #1 favorite place on the internet.

This is an overwhelming place for newbies. Thanks much for this thread. I was lucky to have gotten into knives after starting my gun collection. So, I knew to study carefully, look around, take my time, ask others who are experienced and credible. (I live in the southern U.S., where gun people are so damn nice, generally.) And, to hold onto to my money until I had a very clear idea of what I wanted or needed. I am fortunate to have bought some very decent Kershaws and Spydercos starting out. Then, Benchmade. I am dreaming of a Sebenza 21 now. All in a progression. But unlike guns, who have a very open and vocal constituency, knives are much more undercover in nature and harder to get into. So much more personal. So this place is important. Thanks fore making it that way.

Hi,

Im from Canada, this forum is the perfect tool for knife collector im using Tapatalk App for Iphone and to read the forum.

Newbie to forum but not for knife.

I am a new guy from Georgia. I have collected knives on and off since my grandfather gave me a old Case knife that belonged to his dad when I was five. After that I have been hooked ever since buying and collecting through the years. Even though I have had this "obsession" (that's what my wife and my dad calls it anyway) for knives for so long I feel like I still only have a limited knowledge of blade types, designs and different types of steels. I have been a lurker of the site for a while and finally decided to join. I am looking forward to meeting everyone and learning all I can.
