We were all new here once

New to knives and to this forum. But, I've got a pretty thick hide from years on gun forums and just plain old years. Before semi-retiring, I spent over 40 years helping people start and build their own businesses. Now, I help a couple people every year get started in their own business voluntarily and without compensation.

I met a young man who is an excellent knife maker and I'm helping him with the business, sales, and marketing side of things. And, that brought me here. This is one amazing forum. And, yes, overwhelming. I'm looking forward to listening and learning.

Hey there from the Hoosier state. I'm new to knife collecting and love this site. So much information in one place is awesome.

Hey everyone,

New to knife collecting and to the forums. I'll probably lurk a little more before I start posting but thanks for putting together a nice site with tons of information.

Well said. We all have different things about knives we like. There are things about knives I have learned that I didn't know when I was new to the hobby. Not that I know everything now cause I don't. Yes, you are right about the benefits of educating people. I have found that there are two types of educating. Those who show patience and understanding, who are truly trying to be helpful, and those who take great satifaction in proving that they are smarter than the person they are talking to. It is usually very obvious to tell when a person is speaking for the benefit of the person they're talking to or for themself. Thanks for a great post.

I'm glad you liked it. And thank you for your post.

Welcome all new comers! We're glad to have you and look forward to reading your posts. This is a pretty good group of people and I'm sure overall you'll feel welcome.

Hello/

What is most comical to me are the guys whom are quick to point out others areas of fault, as if they are the Holy Grail of all things sharp and pointy. I would venture to guess that men like Kephart and George Sears would make the majority of these " experts" feel quite inadequate in there use of cutlery in the real world outside of a chatroom. just a guess anyway.

Hello everybody, I'm new here, but I took time reading the forum.
I'm from Spain, here we have an ancient tradition regarding knives and folders too, but I'm in love with the pieces made there.
Apologies for my English, I will continue reading and learning from all of you, and I hope to contribute something to the forum also.
Greetings from Spain!!!

I am very new here but i must say i have not met a knife maker who would not help out a newbe if they ask ..you are real good guys here. Thanks

Hi everyone. I'm very new here too as well as new to knives. I've spent quite a bit of time reading and will continue to do so before asking a lot of questions. My interests currently lean towards hiking/culinary & knives suitable for a female edc at work or for evening dress. I enjoy the knives I have but they do tend to clash with a gown LOL. The gents are pretty fortunate to have William Henry. So far the ladies equivalent has been elusive but I will enjoy the search. I've already received quite a few compliments from knife dealers who are both surprised and delighted that I know some of the knife basics thanks to all of you :) I still have a long way to go. Thanks again to those that post and share your knowledge.

I have just recently joined, and this is my first post. After lurking, reading reviews, and purchasing several knives, I figured it was time to introduce myself.

Not sure why I have taken an interest in knives: I don't hunt, don't fish, don't really go off into the wilds of anywhere...unless you consider suburban Cleveland wild (it isn't).

I think it's the beauty of knives - siplicity, art, and sometimes complexity. And of course, they do come in handy.

I've been concentrating on picking up a few EDC knives, and I'll purchase a few more. I may move on to a fixed blade or two - though at this time I don't really see a use for them.

Below is a photo of several of my recent purchases. It seemed to me that Benchmade (Mini Griptilian and Mini Barrage 586) were a good place to start for EDC knives. I liked the looks of the Case canoe - and I have to say both blades are as sharp as my Mini Barrage 586. The Kershaw is kept in the kitchen for cutting veggies and such.

This evening a pair of Buck 110s will arrive from Amazon. I figured I'd try out the standard and finger grip models.

Tomorrow the family takes off for a trip out to New Mexico (starting to think about where I may want to retire), and the Mini Griptilian will be in my checked luggage.

The next purchase will be a pair of Spyderco - a Sage 1 and Sage 2. From there, not sure.

So, to those whose posts and reviews have provided insight so far, I say many thanks. And I appreciate the opportunity to introduce myself.

Best regards and a happy holiday season,

This is my first post and I'm glad I found this forum! I look forward to learning as much as picking up some decent blades. I will be along shortly with some questions, I look forward to gathering a little knowledge from the folks here!

Glad I found this thread as well. I've been lurking for a while reading and researching. Semi-long time collector with a broad range od tastes (inexpensive to full custom). I look forward to contributing and learning more.

Im slowly starting a collection of knives and came across this site, and im really glad i found it!.

What a fantastic place for reading/talking about knives and sharing input with other knifeoholics. :)

I'm an old new guy. I was encouraged to join the forum by some long standing forum members who I've been collecting / sharing knives with for many years. I had been thru a recent tragedy and they felt it would do me good, bring some happiness. I have visited Blade Forums over the years but I finally joined this month. My first post was a reply to a question about new factory made axe heads and within 15 minutes another user pounced right on it with some rather disparaging words. Okay, I thought, this is how it works around here. I moved on to another thread and got into a heated discussion about knife brands. I tried to explain that I am a blacksmith but no matter. Oh boy, don't say anything about somebody's favorite knife (learning curve) My forum buddies were reading my post and visiting with me about the pros and cons thru our usual communication and I expressed how I was so discouraged from the posts that I had decided Well this isn't for me.
No wait, I was told, theres a place you can go and ask for advice on how to post, reply, and act. Really I asked. Why yes, I was told... Its called Whine and Cheese.
I had no idea what that really was, one "trusts" ones friends so away I went to the W&C. Meanwhile all my little advisory group turned on their laptops and sat back to watch.
Dear God......
W&C does one thing real quick. It harden tests your steel. I got called many colorful things by some amazingly "brilliant" forum personalities. They shred everything. Nothing is sacred. Your profile, your spelling, where you live, user name, all ripped. To my friends (two of which are mods here) who were monitoring the exchange it was like watching a comedy show. But I survived it and I'm learning to dance on this ballroom floor.
Here are some things I've learned so far:
1. W&C is NOT a forum advice column.
2. Stay on topic.
3. Don't post too much personal info unless it pertains to the thread. Nobody here really wants to read a persons resume' and if you relate something remarkable it probably won't be accepted or believed.
4. In line with that don't demand proof or authenticity. Just read on and glean the useful.
5. Like any large group of people there are those in here that are a real delight to hear from. When you find them ask to be thier friend. Watch how they post. Immitate thier methods.
6. Don't get fired up because someone who you don't know doesn't agree with you.
and
7. W&C is not a forum advice column (I had to learn that one twice)
All in all it has been an educating if not enjoyable experience so far. Now on to month 2. :D

Welcome to Bladeforums.

This thread doesn't get a lot of viewing so you're not likely to get many knife-specific responses. You might get more responses to your question by starting a new thread.

There is also a sub-forum here at Bladeforums that is specifically dedicated to KA-BAR knives. You can find the KA-BAR forum by clicking on the Quick Navigation menu on the lower right hand corner of the screen (the one that says "General Knife Discussion"). If you click on that it will bring up a scrolling menu. Scroll on down until you see "KA-BAR Knives" (it's a good ways down). Click on "KA-BAR Knives" and you should find many KA-BAR lovers.
