We were all new here once

Very new to all this knifey/pointy world! I love learning about new stuff, and I have spent 25 plus years working on bicycles, so I am pretty good at the nerdy, technical stuff once I get going. I also spent time unloading semi-trailers, working in warehouses, and installing flooring. Now I teach at a college. Started getting into knives about 9 months ago, and currently, I EDC a Kershaw Leek composite blade, and also have a Kershaw Wild Turkey VG-1 tucked away. I love most of the RJ Martin Kershaw designs. I am also digging on Opinels, and have some Mora carbon steels kicking around as well.
I have enjoyed lurking here, and hope I am off to a good start.
Thanks!
B.

I don't mean to be preachy, but those of us who have been here awhile know that sometimes newbies don't always receive much in the way of patience and understanding. Sometimes it's easy to jump on those who are new to knives, know less than we do, or simply have different tastes in knives. Sometimes criticism comes a little too easy on internet forums.

Remember that we were all new to knives once, we didn't know anything. And if we were lucky someone with a generous amount of patience and understanding was willing to take the time to teach us, even if it meant pushing their patience and understanding to the limit.

How many of us can say that every knife purchase we made was a smart one. How many of us at some point have bought a knife simply because we thought it was "cool", or "tactical", etc. How many of us have bought knives from questionable companies with silly marketing. I doubt that any here are perfect.

In my humble opinion, this forum should be about more than personal entertainment, it should also be a place to provide guidance to those who are new to this "hobby", even if that means exerting a bit more patience and understanding. After all, how would we want to be treated if we were new here? In the end, we can teach newbies a lot more with patience and understanding than with insults and criticism.

Of course, if you've been here a while then you better have thick skin, because you're fair game ;).

Just my thoughts.

I can agree with what you are saying 100% My first post here was in the Bear Grylls Ultimate Pro topic, and talk about a sh*t storm LOL.I mentioned that I took that knife out in the woods and beat the tar out of it and a few members did not like that. Anyways we like what we like right? I consider myself a fan of many diffrent knives but above anything else, I like what works. Ka-Bars, Mora, Kershaw,ESEE to name a few.Gerber makes a few good knives as well like the Pro and the LMF 2, not sure about the rest but I hear mixed reviews.

Anyways this is just opinions on my part, im a fan of a variety of knives, and im happy to be apart of a community that appreciates them like I do. So warm welcome or cold reception, thanks for having me. - Stay frosty, stay safe.

I have to shake my head at all the money wasted in my early days because of the SEALZZZZ and tacticool factor with absolute no regard to the company's reputation and quality. My pocket would be lined with a Sabenza or a few more benchmades or spyderco's and my trash can would have a little less steel inside.

I can't call myself a knife expert but I do like to steer my "curious" friends away from crap and into better knives made by more well respected companies. I also try to tell them what I don't like in a particular knife they're looking at. Of course if they really want that serrated tanto with pot metal steel I can't stop them.
I do find it difficult to explain to them why they would want a $100 knife over the gas station special when they focus on the price tag. But I've learned the hard way that if you buy something good now, you only cry once

Money wasted, but you learned something from spending that money when you used the blades, right? So, it really wasn't money wasted unless you missed the mortgage/rent payment because of those now ignored blades.

We all start where we start in terms of choosing blades for whatever purpose based on our experience and factors that are hard to often define. I find carrying a pocket knife to be immensely useful and practical and I don't care if it is tacti-cool or the latest and greatest steel. We learn about the steel as time goes on. Hard to convince a blade newbie to spend $200 on a knife when they can get a pretty good knife these days for $30-$50 if the cost is a big issue. I felt that way when I first started buying blades and it is all part of the learning experience. Read, learn, buy, use, and enjoy..... then do it all over again and again and again. :D

Survival Solutions mentioned the Bear Gryllis Ultimate Pro above and that particular thread is probably still active. It is not a bad knife overall. Many here would simply choose something else. New posters also tend to have a rather thin skin and take things a little too seriously at times. For me, I really don't care if somebody doesn't agree with me or that my choice is not their choice.

Hello all,
I am new to this forum. I am from NC, but moved to Texas after serving in the US Army. My father is the co-owner of a knife company in Aberdeen, NC. I really don't know too much about knives, but plan to use this forum as a tool to learn more!

Welcome aboard and thanks for your service to our country! If you want to learn more about knives, you came to the right place.

I am also new. I carried a 110 for about a year and about 4 months ago I changed jobs and needed something smaller. I bought a leek, and I blame that damn thing for unleashing the knife nut inside me. Since that leek, I have steadily been buying better and better knives, so much so that I've had to cut myself off for the past couple weeks. I can't say it hasn't been fun though. I've always checked this forum when trying to make a knife decision, so I figured It was about time I joined.

And we are glad you joined. Great source of info here and we were all new once. Chime in anytime, the power of this forum is the posts and the users.

I'm brand new here and I hope this is the place to at least say hello to everyone! I own a few knives but I'd by lying if I said I knew a lot about knives . . . I do not. I'm hoping this is a good environment to observe what is going on and to start asking a few questions. I learned long ago that knowledge begins with an acceptance of ignorance first. So hello to you all and I hope to learn from you!

Welcome. This is a great place to learn. Many people here with lots of experience. Enjoy the forums.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts killgar. I haven't been a very active member over the years but I do get on here. I just am not much of a group thinker and a lot of these people are. We all have our own taste but some people like to criticize others who don't like what they like or what is "popular":/

As a brand new member I could make all kinds of comments about this but it seems it's all been said. Suffice to say thank you to Killgar. I'm not thin skinned but the less BS there is to wade through to find someone willing to share real wisdom, the better. Isn't that what forums are about? And who knows, I may just have a little wisdom to share as well.

Thanks again.

And my continued thanks to all of you who contribute to this thread. I read every post. :)

Killgar,
Thanks for starting this thread. Also, reading very post shows your dedication to BF and our newer members. Well done.

I am also new to the forum, but have been a blade steel snob for decades. So I think I will fit right in ;-)
