We were all new here once

I'm a noob too. Although I have followed BladeForums on an off for a while, I have just recently registered here so I can participate, rather than lurk. :^)
I've been fascinated by sharps since I was very young, and both collected knives, swords, axes, etc. (in a fairly casual way, until recently) and used them. While I technically grew up as a city boy, I spent a lot of my youth either on family farms and ranches or backpacking in the Appalachians and the Rockies.

In the past year, following my father's death and inheriting his collection (he had the bug too!), I have rediscovered my love of sharps and have started collecting. I have a small but growing collections of traditional folders (some antique, some new), fixed blades, and more modern non-tactical folders (mostly, but not exclusively, Spydies with a smattering of others, including my new Doug Ritter Mk 1 mini-Grip in M390). I have become very interested in knife making (although have not yet tried my hand at it) and both the artistry and the materials that go into it.

I'm happy to be a part of this forum now, and am looking forward to participating, learning, and sharing! In the process, I'll try not t be one of THOSE newbies! ;^)

New to Blade Forums and new to knives but not new to passion and enthusiasm for great products!

Here to listen and learn from the experts.

Thank you for letting me be a part of it this great place :)

Hi, Brad from Madison, WI. What a great forum! My knife knowledge has quadrupled in the last month thanks to this great site. Glad to be aboard.

New user to the forums, also a member of iKnife Collector, been collecting blades for 40 years but only started collecting folding knives late last year, looking to learn as much as I can.

Regards,
Mike

Yep, yet another n00b here...

I've been fascinated with knives for as long as I can remember. My Dad would let me wear his Camillus Pilot Survival Knife that he got in Vietnam when we would go camping and I thought I was such a little badass... HA!

Anyways, I've fully embraced my love of all that is sharp, pointy and all-around good to have on one's person at all times.

I don't have a lot of knives (maybe a dozen or so) and am only just learning about the finer points (no pun intended) of owning, maintaining and understanding steel but I knew I needed to sign into these forums because there's such a wealth of information here that I might as well give it a shot.

Anyhoo... Thanks for reading and please excuse any silly questions.

Thanks for your thoughts. Refreshing to read. We have to remember we have much more in common to disagree so vehemently. Lots of unnecessary "virtual jabs" some people take. You mean we don't actually have to tear each other apart?

Have you ever seen a healthy, winter-weary horse roll in a freshly ploughed field in spring - and rise to stand tall and shake with great pleasure?

Perhaps you have dropped in during the rolling. It has been a little more sharp here recently in my opinion.

There is more compassion, assistance, fellowship, knowledge & skill sharing ... in more aspects of life than could possibly be expressed in the name of this forum. Bladeforums.com

Read and read ... and in time the body of information, camaraderie and peer-help here will be the body of your discussion.

Respectfullly, Susan

Hey! Welcome to the forum.

This forum is moderated by members and official mods. Kudos, hats off ... offer respect and compliance to those who make this forum what it is - it is pretty free-flowing IMO

Howdy! Noob as of today to this forum and blades in general, but certainly not to the internet, Jeeps, guns, and a variety of other hobbies. Lots to read, so off to the stickies so I don't get hammered in my first topic :)

As someone who's brand new here - like seriously this is my first reply ever - I agree with everything you said.

Just want to say that I always love looking at this thread/sticky and seeing all the new faces. I have been here for what seems like a long time, but in reality is only a little over a year.
I still learn things every single day, and am meeting so many wonderful people and real friends on here that I can't even keep track of all of it! :D

Hope to see many more new faces wandering around!

I feel very much the same way.

I've noticed that many new members will post in this thread first, sometimes after lurking for quite a while. It makes me feel good knowing this thread inspires some people to make their first post on Bladeforums. And hopefully once they have "broken the ice" in this thread, they will feel comfortable participating in more forum discussions.

I read, and appreciate every post in this thread. :)

I am as new to this as new can be. I have taken exmark blades, ground them down
w/o any heat treat or quench. The blades were apparently tempered or heat
treated already because I had to use a carbide bit to cut the scale holes. I
used a leather strap w/ jeweler's rouge for final sharpening and I feel
confident that it will be a good all round knife. Excellent cutter (rope &
cardboard is not a good test) will cut paper in any amount with weight of the
blade.
Q: What am I missing as far as preparation for use?

Welcome to Bladeforums Knkmott.

There is a sub-forum here at Bladeforums specifically for knifemakers and people with questions about knifemaking. To find that sub-forum, scroll to the top of the screen and click the white box that says "Forum" under the Bladeforums logo. That will take you to the forum directory where you can see all the various sub-forums here at Bladeforums. The second box down is the "Knife Maker's Discussion Forum". Click on "General Knife Maker's Discussion" and you will find many friendly and helpful people who are extremely knowledgeable on the subject of knifemaking, and who will likely be able to answer any questions you might have on the subject.

That knife you made sounds interesting. I'd love to see a picture if you can post one.

New here as well. found this site after buying my first knife in many years (still have all the old ones). Love the reviews and comparisons.

I have been reading this site for a couple years but never post anything. i have bought several new knives recently so maybe i will do a review if i have time.

New guy here as well! I look forward to gaining some knowledge from all the folks who participate. Primarily a lurker, but man I sure do read a lot of the posts and who knows, perhaps one day I will know a thing or two and pass on some knowledge to others.

Thanks in advance for the education:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

My first intro post. Lost my first regular carry knife a couple months back. Replaced with a cheaper folder, but currently have 4 that are typically on me now (SAK, folder, fixed, & multi). 3 more will arrive this week (including one for the wife). Have an additional 5 on the wish list. Right now I'm having fun practicing sharpening techniques at home. D'Eskabar probably wasn't the best bet to learn with, but the other blades come up nice and sharp!
