We were all new here once

Thanks guys. Surleyone I'm also not a young one. I'm in my 40s.... just took me a while to take the plunge and try this.

Hey guys, don't know if I'll turn into a collector like most people here - but I've been looking for an EDC knife and after much deliberation, I landed on a Chris Reeve Sebenza. Also purchased a Spyderco sharpening system (heard they work great and are newbie-proof). I grew up with a Buck 110 but other than that I'd say I'm completely knew to the hobby.

And I know I say I don't know if I'll turn into a collector... but it hasn't even arrived yet and I find myself looking at my next CRK, among some Benchmade, William Henry, and ZT knives as well... We'll see what happens :)

Thanks for having me.

Welcome!

Don't know if you'll become a collector or not but getting a Sebenza for EDC is a great choice. I have a few knives and outside of work I almost always carry my Sebenza 25.

Hi everyone!

New to this site as well as the knife world, but everyone seems really nice here.

I have a question: Will a knife's condition deteriorate (dull, stiffen, rust, etc) over time if I don't use it?

I have a Real Steel E77 folding knife that I'm really happy with, and was planning to get another one as a back-up. The thing is I'm not sure when I would use it, if ever, and was worried if its condition would deteriorate.

Welcome to Bladeforums.

To answer your question, moisture (humidity), and other climate and environmental changes can have a variety of affects on a knife in storage. For example-

Metal parts can corrode and/or discolor (like brass).

Steel parts, even some stainless steels can rust (sometimes that rust cannot be perceivable to the naked eye).

Rust (like the "invisible" kind) can dull the edge of a knife all by itself.

Some greases/lubricants can become gummy or harden over time.

Natural handle materials can shrink, crack, discolor, and even be eaten by insects (stag, bone).

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. If you post this same question below in the main area of General Discussion you might get other answers and opinions, including answers from people who are familiar with the specific knife you are asking about.

Some people will store knives in ziplock backs, or in waterproof plastic cases (like Pelican or Storm cases), and some people will use dessicant packets to absorb moisture from inside their storage containers.

Morning Blade Forums,

I just registered today. I have been interested in and using knives since I was a little kid. I used to wait for the Cold Steel catalog to come in the mail. I grew up in Florida and Mississippi, and was constantly around sharp blades. As Steve Erkel like, as I am, I still have all fingers and toes.

My mother raised me, so I am a Mamma’s boy. She is an industrious southern woman, and preached endlessly about having a good sharp knife. She cooked with them, camped with them, and worked the green house with them.

SO, Mamma is why I am here. She is 64, and arthritic. She still does a lot of cooking, and handling task for my nephews. I am going to make her a knife that will be as ergonomic as possible, increasing her longevity with the knife.

I am not a novice with files, metal cutting, welding, or shop practices. But just for the sake of me building Momma the best blade possible, assume I know nothing, as not to miss anything for my learning purposes.

She uses her right hand exclusively for cutting and slicing task and tends to choke up on the blade moving the balance more in her hand. So I was thinking a Japanese style right handed chisel design with a secondary bevel for easier sharpening for her with a 4 inch blade, couple with a handle that would be shaped to just her hand. She uses a smaller Perring style knife for almost every task.

I have bought some 1095 steel from New Jersey, and $50 dollar Knife shop, and Murray Carters Blade Smithing book. This build will be all stock removal. I will build mine first to work out the kinks. This is something I am serious about and all knowledge is welcomed.

In lieu of the upcoming Force Awakens I am your Padawan.

Very Respectfully,

Cody Brown

Welcome Cody. I think it's great that you want to make a knife for your mother. She sounds like a cool lady.

If you're looking for any help or advice on knife making, there is a sub-forum here at Bladeforums dedicated specifically for that purpose. And there are lots of helpful and friendly people there who are very knowledgeable on the subject of knife making.

You can find the knife making sub-forum by scrolling to the top of the screen and clicking on the white box in the upper left hand corner that says "Forum" under the Bladeforums logo. That will take you to the forum directory. The knife making sub-forums are in the second box down.

Greetings. Just joined up here as I have caught the "knife bug"? In particular, Spyderco folders. Always liked knives, but really, never knew anything about them. What a big world KNIFE STUFF is, wow, I had no idea. I have some Gerbers and such, but when I got my 1st Spyderco (Endura4), I was sprung. Its going to be habbit forming I can see. I now have a Delica, and on the way I have a Manix2 LW and a Sage 2 Ti! Been tracking the packages daily! Anyway, a new Spyderco/knife addict on board. Great site so far. Tons of great info. Looking forward to exploring the new world!

This might be my first post. Ive been lurking around here for years. Been collecting case knives for years. Just recently got into nicer folders. Its becoming quite the problem - ha. Lots of good information here already that Ive found, and tons of nice people. Noticed a few people here from car forums that Ive known for years. Looks like this can be a place to call home for a long time.
