Hey guys, don't know if I'll turn into a collector like most people here - but I've been looking for an EDC knife and after much deliberation, I landed on a Chris Reeve Sebenza. Also purchased a Spyderco sharpening system (heard they work great and are newbie-proof). I grew up with a Buck 110 but other than that I'd say I'm completely knew to the hobby.
And I know I say I don't know if I'll turn into a collector... but it hasn't even arrived yet and I find myself looking at my next CRK, among some Benchmade, William Henry, and ZT knives as well... We'll see what happens![]()
Thanks for having me.
Welcome to Bladeforums.Hi everyone!
New to this site as well as the knife world, but everyone seems really nice here.
I have a question: Will a knife's condition deteriorate (dull, stiffen, rust, etc) over time if I don't use it?
I have a Real Steel E77 folding knife that I'm really happy with, and was planning to get another one as a back-up. The thing is I'm not sure when I would use it, if ever, and was worried if its condition would deteriorate.
Morning Blade Forums,
I just registered today. I have been interested in and using knives since I was a little kid. I used to wait for the Cold Steel catalog to come in the mail. I grew up in Florida and Mississippi, and was constantly around sharp blades. As Steve Erkel like, as I am, I still have all fingers and toes.
My mother raised me, so I am a Mammas boy. She is an industrious southern woman, and preached endlessly about having a good sharp knife. She cooked with them, camped with them, and worked the green house with them.
SO, Mamma is why I am here. She is 64, and arthritic. She still does a lot of cooking, and handling task for my nephews. I am going to make her a knife that will be as ergonomic as possible, increasing her longevity with the knife.
I am not a novice with files, metal cutting, welding, or shop practices. But just for the sake of me building Momma the best blade possible, assume I know nothing, as not to miss anything for my learning purposes.
She uses her right hand exclusively for cutting and slicing task and tends to choke up on the blade moving the balance more in her hand. So I was thinking a Japanese style right handed chisel design with a secondary bevel for easier sharpening for her with a 4 inch blade, couple with a handle that would be shaped to just her hand. She uses a smaller Perring style knife for almost every task.
I have bought some 1095 steel from New Jersey, and $50 dollar Knife shop, and Murray Carters Blade Smithing book. This build will be all stock removal. I will build mine first to work out the kinks. This is something I am serious about and all knowledge is welcomed.
In lieu of the upcoming Force Awakens I am your Padawan.
Very Respectfully,
Cody Brown
