Well let's start! Hand Tool Knife WIP Thingy

I'm gonna have to subscribe to this forum....I am eager to follow it along. It has been helpful for me starting out. I just don't have access to the panther piss... I do have a 2yr old we are trying to potty train though lol.

Will,
I am happy with my design so go ahead and cut it out!!

I will get everything on the list but I was thinking about trying either
the new gorilla glue epoxy, I will see though not sure yet!!

As far as panther piss, I cannot get it but I might be able to get bobcat piss if that will be a good enough substitute.

Also, I think I can only afford 1 bucket of blood unless its a really small bucket, I strt getting really pale and dizzy if I go waste over 1 gallon:D

You'll never be a knifemaker only giving up 1 bucket of blood :p

Ern, don't worry about the tile, I've got an extra one.

My buddy, Charlie Edmonson is making up file jigs for y'all  and I've got an anonymous donor for handle material. He is sending finishing instructions with the scales so you'll know who he is but he told me he didn't want any "shout outs" or credit for helping new makers.

As a new maker you need slooooowwww setting epoxies, if the scales can shift they will shift, if stuff can ooze and cause a mess it will ooooozzeeee and make a mess. So use slow stuff so you can get stuff right and clean up the mess.

Ok.........I will eat better and drink lots of water, I think then I could spare 2 buckets, maybe even 2 1/2!!

Thanks for the tile too!!!!

Ok, take 2 here since BF decided to log me out and delete my entire reply the first time.

I got the go ahead from Will about being a student here. So here goes the obligitory Bio and info.

My name is Dan, Im 28, from NE Ohio, Ive been (In no peticular order) A mason, carpenter, contractors right hand man, driver, laborer, road crew.

My hobby is mainly firearms and shooting. Palma matches, long range shooting, varminting. I tinker on firearms too. Im a kit builder, a custom maker, I repair, tune, and modify them. I hunt for meat, and I could care less about taking that 18 point buck, does fill the freezer all the same to me.

I enjoy the outdoors and 4 wheeling. I dont own my own, I just use a friends. I just received a dirt bike in a trade the other day, so I'll see how riding a bike off road goes. I autocross, and enjoy a fast car too. Campings another one up there on the list.

Tool wise off of Will's list.

1 thick marble tile - the folks might have one, or else I'll need one of these.

Sandpaper from 60-400x, - I'll need some over 220 grit. I have emery cloth.

Spray adhesive - check

Sanding lube - Ive got plenty of lube and metal preservatives. Im sure somethig here would work from kroil, CLP, rem oil, 3 in 1, motor oil, etc.

pinning material - I have a lathe, so I already own small amounts of copper and brass, I have some brazing rods, and a broken brass cleaning rod that would work great for pinning material.

Drill bit - Ive got em en mass. HSS, cobalt, TiN, metric, numbered, fractional.. not a problem.

A 4 in 1 rasp - check

C Clamps - I have 12" down to 1" c clamps.

A sharpie marker - These have legs in this house.. I'll try to locate a lost one.

Rubbing alcohol - Check.

Paper towels - Check

Tape - Duct, masking, painters, packing, scotch, etc. Whats the use for this exactly? Im thinking wrapping up the knife for pattern purposes and for scratch resistance.

Epoxy - I have A + B type 5 min epoxy.. the good stuff, modeling epoxy, some various other stuff too.

Wax - Case wax, bees wax, bullet lube thats mainly wax, paraffin, shoe wax, sno seal. Covered here.

1 bucket panther urine - I'l need to import some or if bobcat urine can be substituted I'll go with that.

2 buckets of sweat - I'll provide this one we start working

2 buckets of blood - Only 2? I thought we were going to make something sharp and pointy?

A patient spouse/loved one/family/friends - check, I havent drove her nuts yet.

I'll get the sketches later tonight or tomorrow. Todays been a busy day to say the least.

You also forgot handle material on the list Will.

He covered the handle material in his last post.

For marble slabs, give a call to a renovator that does counter tops, chances are pretty good they'll have a nice thick piece cut out for a sink hole. I got lucky and found 2 double sink cut-outs in an alley leaned up against a stop sign.

One thing that I think needs clarification... ummmm 2 people were selected for me to cut blanks and gather/make tools and materials (it's all I can afford right now :( ) everyone can work along and if you're using 1095 or 1084 I can HT it for you.

Not a problem will. I have paracord here and some maple laying around for handle material. Theres steel out in the garage, but I have no clue what it is. 1/4" x 4" x 36" stainless, and some even bigger. I'll order some 10xx series to stay up with you on here, its not a problem at all.

I picked up my 12" X 12" piece of polished granite from my local big box home improvement store for $5. It's a nice working surface.

Will, perhaps I misunderstood that you might be able to help us "non-winners" procure our steel blanks if we were to cover the cost of the material and your time?

If not, (which is fine, as I greatly appreciate all you are doing for us), what source would you recommend to obtain the steel?

Michael

PS I've mocked up my litte coffin-handled blade in cardboard and I think it will work.

Michael,
Hmm let me clarify my clarification..... I can get cut a blank for ya if you can cover shipping, it's the freeby stuff like handle materials and tools I can't cover.

I hope that clears things up although I haven't finished my first cup of coffee (night shift ya know :p )

That's more than fair--thanks again!

Unless you think I'm way off base, I think I would like to proceed with my design. Please PM or email me at your convenience and I will forward funds via PayPal.

I have some black micarta coming and also some of Burlsource's walnut sample scales so I'm covered for handles and I have some brass pin stock and epoxy already. I'll pick up any odd tools I don't have.

Michael

Good minds think alike--this was just posted in the gallery and is pretty much what I would like to make:

You're going to need more panther piss and Ninja Monkeys to make a revolver:cool:

Well, I've got plenty of weasel piss and a mean JRT, will that do? :D

To hijack my own thread, back in the day when we had our Title II manufacturer's license we did plenty of gun smithing, but not much with revolvers--I did carry the enclosed hammer Ti version of that 'Smith for several years.

Heres one Will. The silver is the actual edge, but it should go all the way to the tip. Thats an error in thepicture. The red is just a false edge, taken down to make it a bit more pointy and get into boxes tops etc if needed to to pen them.

Im working on a second one that the blade drops down instead of a finger guard, and has more of a belly to the blade.

Dan,
Accckkkk straight lines  :p

A nice thin point prevents the need for a false edge/swedged for getting into stuff. I prefer pointy :D

Seiously, you're comparing a JRT to a ninja monkey? Sighhhhh one day you'll learn.

For cut and shoots you'll need to get with Mr. Bump.

Okay for the people that feel their design is ready please post something to that affect on here to confirm this and pm or email me your address.... will46r at yahoo

Double posting to add some information.....

Just got the scales in from our benefactor, if you guys don't like this wood you have no soul and I'm coming to your house to kick you in the taint until your eyes bleed! This stuff is freaking better than great!

Ha ha--our stupid 16 lb. Jack has attacked everything up to and including a 175 lb. Great Dane but a Ninja Monkey would probably be the end of her.

Have been out of the gun biz for years, but we did have fun with it for a while--a license to make as many machine guns, suppressors, short barreled shotguns, etc. as one wants can keep you busy (and broke) for quite some time.

Anyway, I like my coffin-handle design, especially after seeing a similar design all done. I'll PM you my address and PayPal info shortly :-)

Michael

I'm good with mine.
I annealed some 1084 a couple days ago, and will cut out my blade this weekend.
