Whacha Been Up To......

here's a little sneek peek of a knife I'm almost done with. I'll post better pictures in my thread with all my work when it's finished.

(EDIT: oh wait, just realized this is a thread for sheaths, not knives.... 🤦‍♂️)

If you've got a sheath planned for this knife I don't see why we can't have ya post here too. I post about some of my knives here but do include the sheaths and other leather work. After all it is Sheaths and Such and its hard to be interested in sheaths if ya ain't interested in knives first.

oh yeah, I'll definetly post again when I start work on the sheath

As a lot of you folks know, I'm not keen on making fixed blade sheaths, just not something that I enjoy, folding knives are more my favorite and slip sheaths too. I guess since I so tightly form the leather around the folders I can't change the feeling that the fixed blade sheath needs to be snug as well, but having a razor sharp edge out all the time, you need to take extra care when returning the knife to the sheath. I've seen some nasty accidents when someone tries to insert a knife and the tip catches inside the sheath and ends up poking through the back and possibly into that person's hand or leg. BUT on occasion I will make a fixed blade sheath when it becomes necessary. This recent fixed blade I bought has a nice leather sheath but uses a strap to retain the knife. I worry that if while wearing it the snap comes undone, the knife could fall out and cause harm, both to a person and the knife itself. So I made this pouch sheath today, has a cam lock and a small shelf inside that the knife's guard strikes so the knife can't go any deeper. The retention is excellent, no worries about it ever falling out and with the copper rivet swivel belt loop, I can pivot the sheath forward when I go to sit down, much more comfortable carry.

used a small drill bit in my dremel to get through these 5 layers of 8-9 oz leather, much fun to hand sew it as well ;)

And that knife is a bit of a beast, the blade is just a bit over 4 1/2" long, spine thickness is about 4mm but the high flat grind brings it down to a fairly thin edge. I hand sharpened the Nitro-V blade and it took an excellent edge, wicked sharp.

So, not a fancy sheath but a practical one for me, the Celtic embossing is one of my favorites and used Ritza red tiger thread for a little contrast.

and no, I am not taking orders for fixed blade sheaths ;) !

once again, I'm planning on taking some better pictures, but I'll just post them in the Sankel Knives thread.
Very nice work. I would like to make one suggestion for future sheaths with overlays. They will look much more finished if you skive the edges meeting the tooled area a lot thinner. It makes the transitions less pronounced and blends all the colors and textures smoothly. Nothing wrong with what you have done but it would take them to another level of leatherwork.

Thanks for the tip! I hadn't thought of that... but I'll definetly do it next time!

That's my normal range of luck my friend.....I don't belong anywhere near Vegas......... If it wasn't for bad luck I'd have none.......... Quit gambling when I quit drinking in January 12, 1994......🤔.... Been a minute huh..😉

Finishing up my first square front pocket sheath, first time using any tooling punches. The double stitch added a lot of thread! The other is a simple fold over sheath with a belt loop.

Not doing the blades. Getting them from Woodcraft and then putting elk scales on for the handles:

Fixed the broken tip on this one and re sewed the sheath. Looked like the knife ahad been put in the sheath upside down a few times.

That's what I'm saying. We could take you to vegas and have you put a bit of money on black while we bet the house on red! It's a communal effort :)
