What are you watching & why? (splain)

Yeah, he's awesome in this. So far S3 is just as good as the previous seasons.

I loved the line that Ho had in Ep. 2 when he said, "This must have been how Jesus felt. Surrounded by dickheads." 🤣
I had previously read the books that the first two seasons were based upon. I gave up on the books after those two because some of the author's tricks were getting too repetitive from one novel to the next and I found it annoying, though I think Herron is an excellent wordsmith.

The Killer 7/10 for decent action and cinematography, but very weak plot.

Magpie Funeral 8/10 great drama, tears may fall, the little girl steals the show

The Creator 6/10 for great visuals but very weak storyline

The Holdovers 8/10 good drama, good acting and good story.

SPIN 100 greatest rock stars on AXS TV. What a crock of BS! Not so much for who's on the list, but the order they're in. How is Elvis #100?!?! Guy makes more money dead than most of the others that are still alive.

Follow up on The English - finally got around to watching the final episode. Opinion remains the same - it's a good show. If you like Westerns and want something that's just enough different to be interesting but not too different to take away from the genre, I recommend it. Emily Blunt is superb in it, as is Chaske Spencer.

Got started on Lawmen: Bass Reeves and am a few episodes deep now. I'm really digging it. I know there have been complaints about the slowness of its pacing but I haven't minded it at all. Westerns, by their nature, are and should be slower paced ('tis my opinion, anyway). I've enjoyed the subtleties in David Oyelowo's acting and Bass Reeves as a historical figure is pretty fascinating. I think I'll pick up a few books on him and get more familiar.

I hoped for more from "The English", which we saw a year or so back, as I recall. I found that I had a hard time buying much of what they offered. I liked the scenery and the general concept...but it asked a lot, imho.

The first few episodes felt odd to me. I'm not sure if it was the cinematographic style or the pacing but it was pretty distracting at first. I found myself getting into the characters and story though, about mid series, and the distractions were no longer a concern. I don't think I'd watch it again though - it's not Hell on Wheels, Godless, or Deadwood by any means.

Watched a couple of films last night at my weekly movie night with buddies. It was a great time, very much enhanced by adult recreational beverages.

Started with Red Cliff, a John Woo movie based on the historical Battle of Red Cliffs, or at least a romanticized account of it. It was a very fun watch - in our somewhat inebriated state, we all kept making comparisons to LOTR. Seriously, it was a bit uncanny...

Ended the night with Violent Night, which has become my favorite Christmas movie. It might not be considered a "good" movie but I don't care. David Harbor is the man and I was ridiculously entertained.

Ghosted on Apple TV+. Ana de Armas as a CIA operative, and Chris Evans as the boyfriend who finds out the hard way.

Entertaining enough action comedy, and Ana deArmas is a hotter.

Family Plan, starring Mark Wahlberg (also on Apple TV+). Another entertaining enough action-comedy. Marky Mark as an ex-assassin, hiding that fact from his wife and kids.
