What are you watching & why? (splain)

Big Trouble in Little China. No explanation required.
One of my favorite movies of all time. So many great lines.

Ended the night with Violent Night, which has become my favorite Christmas movie. It might not be considered a "good" movie but I don't care. David Harbor is the man and I was ridiculously entertained.
Watched it with the family on Christmas Eve and loved it. Harbour is awesome as Santa Klaus. The Home Alone references had me dying.

Fair enough. Can I ask what turned you off? Just curious
I have a hard time dealing with complete suspension of belief...and there was nothing believable in the portion of the episode I endured. I found last season somewhat entertaining, I found this first episode simply silly.

I don't mind being in the minority on this...it's just the way I'm wired.

We went with a sci-fi theme for our movie night last night. I love sci-fi but it can be very hit and miss in cinema.

Started with Rebel Moon: Part 1. I didn't go into this film with high expectations. It's been pretty excoriated by critics but I am of a general mind that critics are miserable people and likely no fun at all at parties. I'm easily entertained though and have enjoyed many a bad movie. That said, Rebel Moon was not good. To sum up my thoughts: It's a fractured mess of a story that draws elements from Seven Samurai/Magnificent Seven, Star Wars, The Matrix, Harry Potter, LOTR, anime tentacle porn, and romance novel cover art.

Zack Snyder needs to chill out with the slo-mo - clumsy action sequences were unnecessarily drawn out and extended where the time could have been better spent making an attempt at giving me a reason to give a damn about any of the characters. I'll watch Part 2 when it comes out but I have no expectations that it will be any better.

Finished the night out with The Creator. This movie, barely two minutes in, was a vastly superior film to Rebel Moon. It's not a perfect movie, yet it has elements of District 9 in it (loved that movie) and some genocidal mania akin to Avatar (didn't love that movie). Definitely worth a watch if you like the whole "humans vs. robots" trope. The kid who plays Alphie is adorable and does an excellent job.

.............And Serinda Swan is hotter than the sun.

Terry gets it.

You are watching it wrong, E. Approach it like an action comedy. You'll like it much better.

I read that there is a three hour directors cut edition (rated R) of Rebel Moon/part 1 that will be released later. With an hour difference it could be a different movie. Between that, and the horrible reviews, I figured if I watch it I’ll watch the longer version.

I’m seriously gonna have to read those.

My son brought home the first book. I got about halfway through in about an hour or so - it's easy reading. I know that it's a genre that a lot of folks enjoy but I could see myself getting bored pretty quickly if I continued with the series. That's just me though.

I think we can all (maybe) admit the show is waaaay better than the Tom Cruise movies?

100%

I should have known (this being a Snyder movie and all). An R rated version would have been way better and an extra hour (or more) could do a lot to fill in the gaps.

He still needs to chill the f out with the slo-mo. Seriously.
