Loves me some vintage "Clodumbo." It would be great to bring that one back, but how is anyone going to follow Peter Falk? Then again, I didn't think they'd ever find another Spock, but Zachary Quinto seems to have worked out OK.
Meanwhile . . . I have started watching two actual old skool over-ther-air broadcast programs, both on NBC: Law & Order Season 21; and Endgame.
I always enjoyed the original L&O (L&O CI not so much, and L&O SVU not at all). It was of course totally unrealistic, but . . . hello, TV! Anyway, after 20 years on the air, it departed more than a decade ago. Now they've brought it back for a new season, Season 21. Sam Waterston is back as DA Jack McCoy, and Anthony Anderson is back as Det. Bernard. Jeffrey Donovan is Bernard's partner now, Camryn Manheim is "The Loo," and they have two new ADAs.
Very little Sam Waterston in the first episode of L&O Season 21. Maybe 2-3 short scenes. But he's 81 YO now, so what do you expect? IMO, the detectives are fine. Anderson knows his part and plays it well, and Donovan has done a lot of these procedurals in this career and he is OK here. I didn't see any chemistry between them good or bad - it was like they operated independently. A bit strange, but OK. Never been a fan of Manheim, but in limited doses here she is tolerable. The ADAs had zero energy or charisma AFAICT, and were the weakest link. Kind of surprised how flat Hugh Dancy was. The story was also not strong. and the conclusion was very unconvincing - the verdict seemed to come out of nowhere.
Endgame's pilot episode was a bit better than I expected. Seemed to me to have a bit of "Alias" and a bit of "Black List" - neither of which shows I made past a few episodes. Morena Baccarin has had failed TV series on Fox and ABC, so maybe she's going for the network trifecta with NBC. I guess "Gotham" did OK, but I couldn't make it past the second episode. In the first episode here, she deploys with wild abandon her greatest theatrical weapon: "The Knowing Smirk." She specialized in that in her old TV show, "V" and in the "Deadpool" movies, and given the character she plays here maybe that was why she was cast in this part. The production values of the Pilot were high, the plot (so far) was somewhat intriguing, and the rest of the acting was fine. Just not sure how much of that "smartest-gal-in-the-room" smirking I can really take. We'll have to see if she tones that down in the second episode.
I tend not to make it past three or four episodes of 90+% of new shows I try. These two were "aiight" but I'm not sure I'll make it past a couple of episodes of either of them if they don't "fix" a few things.
