What are you watching & why? (splain)

Just watched the "Prey" that others have watched and commented on already.

I liked those parts that I paid attention to while streaming it. Of course, the ending was entirely predictable and it's a "girl-power" themed movie which seems to be the prevailing trend in "action" type movies these days but it was still entertaining to find out exactly how the female heroine would prevail.

Not as much as a downer as Adrien Brody's "Predators" (2010) -- there's no hope even after killing the "bad" Predator -- was, which also had a female power symbol. It was more like "Aliens vs Predators" (2004) where the female heroine forms an alliance w/the Predator and kills the evil Alien Queen.

Put it on my Netflix DVD list for more attentive viewing in the future. Worth watching if you are a fan of the Predator movies and haven't seen it already.

Just watched the 2 opening episodes of "The Rings of Power" (RoP) on Prime this evening and I liked them.

In fact, I think the 1st 2 episodes of RoP are better than the 1st 2 episodes of "The House of the Dragon" (HotD) on HBO.

There's much more action in the 1st 2 episodes of RoP and they're shot on a grander and more epic scale than the 1st 2 episodes of HotD (dragons notwithstanding). Some of the dialog in RoP also takes on a Shakespearean tone and rhythm which gives it more weight to my ear.

Both shows also are going with the current trend of featuring a woman in the lead on screen. I like the female lead in RoP better than the one in HotD because her portrayal of the her character is more compelling to me than the one in HotD. It also doesn't hurt that she's "prettier" from my POV. ;)

Both women attempt to express certain emotions with their facial expressions but, IMO, the female lead in RoP does a far better job of it, as well, and the term "if looks could kill" applies far better to the woman in RoP than it does to the one in HotD. 🧐

These are just my initial impressions and I'm looking forward to seeing how both shows (and the characters) develop over the rest of the season.

Good to hear!

I wasn’t aware of The Rings of Power until a few weeks ago but I’m excited to try it. I first read LOTR when I was about ten, and several times since, and I thought Peter Jackson’s original trilogy was brilliant. I thought The Hobbit films were a dumpster fire, and I’ve never been able to get into any of the George R. R. Martin books or shows.

We watched The Wheel of Time not long ago, and it was super fun. Had kind of a B movie feel but we enjoyed it.

I re-watched A Discovery of Witches a few days ago while working in the shop. Definitely one of my favorite fantasy series.

Watched Neil Oliver’s A History of Scotland the other day. He’s a good presenter, and I found it easy to listen to.

We were planning on watching the first two RoP episodes but I fell asleep in the middle of the first.

There is something about long-haired, made-up women, sparkling clean all around, and men that look just like them, when they are fighting, climbing up ice walls, etc., that puts me off .... seems too weird to pull me in. Not enough Dwarves, I'm guessing :)

Note that I'm a Tolkien fan and liked the original Trilogy (books and movies) just fine.

---

We just caught up with City on a Hill. I don't like any of the characters (except, maybe Cathy Ryan), but I like the series .... go figure.

I've seen those other shows but I didn't find them as appealing.

"The Undeclared War" wasn't just another cops/robbers crime series. The techno/hacking and political angles (and the current relevance of those angles) were what got me interested and got me to binge watch the show.
Watched it over the last week or so. Really good although I found the romantic triangle subplot distracting and unnecessary. Assuming there will be another season given the cliffhanger ending.

Three episodes into House of the Dragon and two into Rings of Power I think RoP is the superior show. Blows away Wheel of Time which was disappointing.

In lighter fare - Bloods just released the second half of season two on Amazon Prime. It’s hilarious, kind of like a British Tacoma FD (which is also funny and you should watch it if you liked Super Troopers).

Just re-watched the last episode of Wheel of Time (WoT). I liked the show the 1st time I saw it and I still like it, even though a lot of people have recently commented that they didn't.

There are parallels in WoT to RoP and LotR, especially the Trollocs (Orks) & the Dark One (Sauron) but I liked it in its own right and hope there is another season.

----------------------------------------------

In any event, I also just watched Episode 3 of HotD and it was better IMO than the 1st 2 because they mainly featured a bunch of talking heads and except for a few dragon scense, a fatal caesarean scene and a teaser brothel scene, those episodes were pretty boring.

The 1st half of Episode 3 involved just more talking but the ending made up for it.

The King's brother -- Daemon -- is proving to be a real "pr*ck" -- and now clearly is the designated villian of the show -- and the screenwriting was a bit far fetched in Episode 3.

WARNING - A FEW SPOILERS AHEAD!

Daemon's fighting a war (I'm not sure why) and losing badly. He brutalizes (if not kills) a messenger who delivers a message from his brother -- the King -- telling him that he (the King) is sending support to assist Daemon in the battle. A message he didn't want to hear because he didn't want any help from his brother who banished him to Dragonstone to keep him out of the way. Didn't he ever hear that you're not supposed to kill the messenger?

Then Daemon falsely raises a white flag to lure the enemy out and attacks them single handedly, somehow runs across the battlefield alone (killing everyone he meets while avoiding volleys of arrows falling from the sky) towards the opposing leader until he's finally hit by a couple of arrows and is about to be overrun and killed by 100's of soldiers who are surrounding him, when (of course) a dragon flies in to burn everyone around him to death which allows him to hunt down and kill the opposition leader while the 2 sides engage in a pretty butal hand-to hand battle scene.

Crazy but at least entertaining in the end. LOL! ;)
