What are you watching & why? (splain)

Just watched "Memory" on DVD in which Liam Neeson plays a gun-for-hire with a conscience.

So, when did Neeson become an action (anti)hero?

I just took a look at his filmography and he has an amazingly wide variety of roles and his role as a "revenge" killer/hero seems to have started as early as "Darkman" (1990) over 30 years ago! In any event, this is another one of that kind of role for him.

This film also finds Guy Pierce playing a befuddled LEO trying to make sense of a string of murders connected with a sex ring but cannot manage to do his job without the help of his prime suspect -- in this case, Neeson -- who not only gives him clues to solve the crime(s) but spares his life in the process.

Another movie of Pearce's like this in which he plays a similar role was "Traitor."

So, there was too much redundancy in this film for my taste. I also found it particuarly frustrating that Neeson's character failed to "finish" the job on his own but the film was ultimately satifying for its "Shooter" type ending.

Can't really recommend this movie but, if you like Neesom and/or vigilante type movies, you may enjoy this movie in a way that I did not.

I think I first saw Liam Neeson in Schindler’s List, and it was good, but The Pianist has become my favorite WWII/survival film. Adrian Brody completely nails the character.

For some reason, I think of Kingdom of Heaven as Neeson’s most memorable performance. “A crusader who returns home to France in search of his son” (Orlando Bloom). Excellent film. Terrific cast. Marton Csokas. Jeremy Irons. Eva Green. David Thewlis. Brendan Gleeson. etc.

I caught-up on The Rings of Power on Saturday. I think it only feels slow because they’re still introducing the cast of characters three episodes in, but I’m happy with the series so far. They’ve managed to make me care about all the characters. Looking forward to E4!

I also just watched the 4th episode of HotD which I've already commented upon elsewhere but it just involved more of the same -- talking heads & political intrigue without any action-- which I hope is a "setup" for something better to come.

Between the 2, I'm still liking RoP better and I am also looking forward to Episode 4 of that series.

My favorite movie is Excaliber, 1980, which had LOTS of British/Scottish/Irish in it who were very young. Including Liam Neeson. And you will recognize the actress who played Morgana, and I almost forgot, Patrick Stewart made his debut in this movie. And the sword is the star.

We finished watching last night as well. Oh, that Kreese. No more red jello for him.

I figure they left just enough story lines open to justify another season...needed or not. I'm not a huge fan of the show, I find it entertaining, but I get a kick out of how much enjoyment my wife gets from it.

I used to compete in Shotokan back in the late 70's...so the tournaments bring back memories.

There will be another season with Kreese and probably another with the Mexican angle too
Eh, I think any storyline with Creese is a stretch. He’s an escapee. Gonna have to keep an extremely low profile to not end up back inside. As soon as he popped up, I would expect US Marshals to be all over his ass if they want to keep it realistic. Yes, I know I just used realistic in a discussion about karate fighting teens in CA where no parents press charges after the weekly all hands on deck rumbles that occur in public.

LOL!! 🤣

I just went over the list and I didn't watch ANY of the people/shows that were nomirnated and/or won in ANY category for this year's EMMY awards, except for 2 -- "The Amazing Race" and "Top Chef," neither of which "won" in the "Best Competition Program" category.

See: 2022 Emmy Awards: The Full List of Winners

I tried watching the "Squid Game" but just thought it was "dumb" and also tried watching "Dopesick" but just found it boring.

Nevertheless, I haven't been at a loss for anything to "watch" on TV this year, which I do for hours every day while I'm at home, which is almost always. I just didn't watch stuff that the members of the "Television Academy" thought was worth watching. Fortunately, my TV viewing choices are not limited by them.

just watched that the other night! My dad brought me to the theatre to watch it when it was released. Made a lasting impression!

I just finished watching Red Sonja- unbelievably for the first time- and it was pretty ok. Totally didn't recognize Brigitte Nielson, either due to the mullet or maybe some plastic surgery

I never much liked Liam Neeson until I saw him in Cold Pursuit. Which is a remake of Kraftidioten, both outstanding movies if you like my kind of humor.

"In order of disappearance:" :)

The other one I liked was The Marksman, not because of Neeson but because it stars an M14 :)

We watched the new Thor movie the other night. I can say, with no small measure of certainty, that it is easily the dumbest movie in the entire MCU. It was unbelievably bad, such a tremendous waste - it makes you wonder how they could drop the ball so badly after its excellent predecessor.

Followed that up with watching the new Pinocchio (can you believe that the original Disney take is like 80 years old now?). Pretty standard for Disney's lineup of "live action" reskins - fun to see the story in a modern light but like the others it lacks the "soul" of the original, despite the efforts of Tom Hanks as Geppetto.

I've been REALLY enjoying the Rings of Power series and I've also been making my way through Peaky Blinders with a buddy, which has also been good so far.
