What did you rehang today?

I've got a couple of handles that show chatoyance and actually thought maybe it was compression from turning or something.

Square_peg mentioned poachers locally taking the bases of tree to get to it - "figured" is was a maple or exotic wood that displayed it.

For example, here is a straight 28" that I kept putting back in the bin just because I thought it to be a lesser piece of wood for a handle.

Not to be esoterically sesquipedalian about it... I just hadn't heard the word "pedantic" in a while.

Thanks Bridger

Using words such as these on an axe forum makes me somewhat uncomfortable, and surreptitiously suspicious of your clandestine activities outside of posting here, Agent_H??:)

Y'all dun lost me, quinton how's the maters this year?

Y'all dun lost me, quinton how's the maters this year?

For the first time in over 30 years, I didn't start an early crop in my high tunnel, I did however start the seed and planted them later. They are doing great right now, and I saw the first fruit turning just this morning, but, they're about a month and a half behind normal.

Fruit set is good, and they are sizing up nicely!

But, the #1 thing I wanted to do this year is add a generation of selection to a hybrid mater I've been working on de-hybridizing for the last several years, as F1 seed for the variety has become discontinued. My selections from parent stock have looked very promising over the last several years, and I may proclaim them stable this year in their F4 generation. They are late planted also, but are looking good as well!

Looking good! They got some size on already, color will change soon, I eat em like an apple, can't get enough of em. Once the home grown are gone I'm done with em.

Fellow 'mater grower! What variety did you start with? I grow almost all heirloom varieties these days.

Thanks, I love them too, but under no circumstance will I buy one from a store.

Steve: the variety is Big Beef. It's the only hybrid I grow now. Thinking about de-hybridizing it as well.

Found this old GBA 2.5LB head in a local junk shop. Spent a sunday cleaning it up, sharpening it, and carving a new hickory haft. It a 2.5lb on a 30" haft. Hope you enjoy.

That's beautiful work, COTS..YOU are an artist of the highest order! I also keep an old Master Quality hatchet handle for a pattern.. I wish the private messaging worked.

Agreed on COTS' hatchet there.

Quinton - have you checked your user settings?

Top of the page>settings>My Settings>General Settings>Private Messaging> “on”.

You can set who can send you PM’s and you can link your email as well so users can send you messages offsite. I have not received any junk email from having it enable.
I think that the sender has to have them on as well as the recipient because I see the option to send private messages to all levels of membership. Nice tomatoes!

That is a good looking axe there as well Wake31.

Heard of that variety, never grew it, though. My main stay is Old German. Doesn't put out a lot of fruit like the hybrids, but she makes up for it in size! Also this year I am trying Abe Lincoln and something called Cherokee Purple. Heard a lot about both, so we shall see.

All my 'maters are sure to be cross pollinated this year, but I may just very well keep the seed and see what becomes of it next year. I could have the next great thing when it comes to heirloom tomatoes!!

Had to do quite a bit of reshaping this Hardware store handle which was too big and then when I was banging it down to get the head on a piece broke off the back but it was so clean I simply reshaped it some more....I think it turned out Ok and an old hatchet head has a new life....should make a nice little splitter....The Blue was a can of Pontiac engine enamel paint sitting around the shop..couldn't resist.

Quick and dirty, a Craftsman head that has seen a lot on a 17.5" House handle and a 4lb Warwood head on half (19") of an old gray sledge handle.

You do hang a mean hammer, Jblyttle.

The Craftsman looks a little offset at the head.

I like it. Looks like it would snap out and cut hard.

If that Craftsman was scaled up to a 3-3.5lb size, it would be mean.

Collins-in-a-box, 32” octagonalized, cherry wood wedge.

The head was a couple oz shy of 4 1/2lbs and is unmarked with a weight so I don’t know what it started at – 4.5 or 5lbs. It’s also marked on the opposite of what seems normal – facing a right hand user.

The extra weight is nice but it would take a stronger guy than me to fell more than two trees in a day swinging sideways with it. It seems to like old dry juniper full of knots though. I kept avoiding a couple of pieces of it as I can do most of what I need to here with a boy’s axe.

Octagonalizing the handles is fun and looks cool but I keep finding myself intentionally smoothing the angles off some if I know it’s going to be used. This one will work out fine I am thinking.

The cat gets a little wacky every time – that always makes me laugh. As far as assistants go he is a little tight-lipped and takes too many breaks but has some great situational awareness going on.
