What did you rehang today?

About a week ago I hung what I believe to be a hatchet head. I didn't weigh it. I put it on a boys axe handle. It has a good feel to it. I found the head about a year ago in the edge of the woods behind my house. I stepped on it in the leaves and it just didn't feel natural so I looked under the leaves and found it. True Temper Flint Edge.

Yes. I carved it with my SFA out of some fire wood from the wood shed. It was hickory. The cross piece might be Ash or pear. I can't remember now.

I used a drill for the holes to pin the blade. You can do the mortises with a knife and chisel.

Always wanted one and never thought about making one, good job looks like another project for me.

Thanks for posting, the splitting haft is a big improvement over the plastic!

I just wanted to try the Collins splitting axe. So far on a few test pieces I'm impressed. It's short handle gives good control. The 4-1/2 lb head isn't too heavy. I'm used to an 8 lb sweet potato maul and a 12 lb monster maul for the tuff stuff.
And for the place with the helpful hardware folks, I though the grain was nice in the replacement handle.

Nice work JB! I wish I could handle a few of my heads, but work in the summer is 24 /7! Looking forward to the fall to post a bunch of projects! But once again, you did a great job!

This is a 3.5lb Collins Homestead on a 30" House Handle, sanded and oiled.

That's the only other homestead I've ever seen with convex cheeks and the simple homestead stamp ( all I usually see pics of also say Collins on them, or are the Mann edge versions )
How common would you say these are ?

That axe has a nice profile from the top.

Great work JB! - another one gets a second chance at life.

That one will fit right in to its new home wherever that might be :)

*I had some Humane Shelter/cat rescue analogy but I can't seem to get it out...

I noticed that, too. Must be from before Collins folded in 1965.

I seem to be doing these at a faster rate than usual lately. The one is an unmarked but very nice 2lb Dayton head on a boy's axe handle. I received the handle without a label, but it looks and feels like a Link handle to me. I've always liked them. Grain orientation is hit or miss, but they are always straight, symmetrical and comparatively slim. Pricey though, but this one wasn't.

The axe weighs a hair under 3lb total and is 27.75" long. Just needs sharpening.

That would be my last piece of purpleheart. I bought a little for fun but wouldn't again. It worked just fine, but others are free and work just as well.
