What did you rehang today?

This is a head that I have had for over a year, waiting for me to do something with it. The most suitable handle that House Handle had was this 20" faller's axe handle. The total weight is a bit under 5lbs, it is 20" long and has a 6.5" edge. The head is a C. Hammond No 5.

Beautiful! I'm working on a C. Hammond carpenters hatchet. Dates back to the late 1800's

The Flint Edge axe...

Actually has an edge! I don't make a habit of sharpening my refinishes, I always assume that people can do it themselves...but I'm rethinking that. Also it makes them more attractive. Now I'm going to have to start selling these with sheaths....

Nice job on that Flint Edge JB. Are you testing out the market for value-added products or is this a logical extension of your amazing tool gathering abilities?

She has a nice "smile"!

How long is the handle on that one JB?

The handle is a 32" House FH handle. It turned out well enough, but I spend about 2 hours shaping and removing wood, it was SO thick. I'm not %100 happy with it, but it's perfectly good. This is why I want to get going on making a batch. If I'm going to put the time in, I would rather be making my own than fixing someone else's.

I went to the local junk shop and spent a few hours cruising around yesterday and came home with this Council 8#. It will be a user so $20 vs $45 for a new one, ehh, what the heck. Not sure when they changed but the mauls pictured on line are not painted red anymore best I can tell.
Don't know why there was so much room to slide between the shoulder and the wedge, or if this is the original handle but I only used a new wooden wedge and reused the round wedge.

I re seated the head down to allow me to cut about 1/2-3/4" off the top to allow better access to the round wedge. Got all that apart.

Rasped the shoulder down and recut the kerf.

Tested it out on a few pieces of seasoned hickory. Should serve me well.

Oooh la la! Pretty handle for your maul.

Chatoyance (learned that here).

I'm not a fan of metal wedges but that looks dead center and really clean - nice work.

Bet there are some spooked Persimmons around your place right now...

Yes it's a nice looking piece of wood. I wasn't sure it came through on the pics. The original finish was kinda orange colored. The owners name in green marker and red paint at the grip. I sanded it down and oiled it up. Still working on that. But it looks nice.

I didn't remove enough length to get deep enough past where the metal wedge was so there was going to be a ring there anyway. If I have to rehang it later I'll take a full inch or so off.

I have a hypothetical question for you.
If you were to get a rusty 1-1/4 lb hatchet head for under 5$, how much would you need for it as is ?

Are you asking what I would want to sell it for? Depends on what it is. Condition, brand etc. Really messed up, overly worn stuff I try not to buy. But US made heads in good shape aside from surface rust usually go for $12-20 with most going for $14-15. This is for good ones. Something a little unusual, in top shape may go for up to $24. Swedish stuff a bit higher. If you are asking, I can find you something nice for $20 shipped Priority. I have a couple clean carpenter hatchet heads that would be less. Also, I can fit two heads in the box so shipping is free on the second one.

BTW, pricing is roughly the same for full size heads. A bit more for Connie's because I love those, and Maine heads are case by case.

OK, that's very reasonable 👍
I just don't find anything in my area but my best chance would be the swap meet 45min away, so having to drive there plus walk around in the summer heat for a few hours to probably not even find anything may not be worth it.
I'll definitely keep an eye out on your hauls to see if you get anything that interest me ( preferably a Michigan pattern hatchet, plumb or Collins would be nice but brand doesn't matter )

This is a couple weeks old but the hardware store handle was really chunky and I didn't like it. This morning I decided to take the spoke shave to it and try to thin it down. I think I like it for a first attempt at really reshaping one. Do I need to thin it a little more closer to the head? Would I take material from the front or back?

.30WCF, how does it feel? Just based on your pictures, I wouldn't take too much more off of it from the front. Seems like it matches up with the eye there.

You could take some off the back of the shoulder. Jersey's sometimes look good thinned on the sides to kind of slip under the lugs - that's all user preference that probably doesn't make any difference during use.

Is the head already wedged on there?

Also, it looks good as you have it.
