What did you rehang today?

.30WCF, how does it feel? Just based on your pictures, I wouldn't take too much more off of it from the front. Seems like it matches up with the eye there.

You could take some off the back of the shoulder. Jersey's sometimes look good thinned on the sides to kind of slip under the lugs - that's all user preference that probably doesn't make any difference during use.

Is the head already wedged on there?

Also, it looks good as you have it.
Yes. It's wedged. I hung it a few weeks ago. I think I'll thin the shoulder a bit more the. Since they are wider than the head.

Thanks guys.

Lowes or ACE. It was so fat you couldn't grab around it.

Got this finished today. Love the patina that was under the rust.
This old hammer was made by Simonds in Fitchburg Ma.

Overall length is 17.25". I've never seen this stamp on a handle. Must have been a hardware chain that is out of business. Nice NOS handle that is perfect for this hammer.

Should I cut the haft flush with the head and cross wedge with a steel wedge?

Il leave it till it needs a metal one.
Looks good.

It's perfect just like that. I love those lineman/rounding heads, if you didn't already hang it I would have asked you to sell me the head. Very nice.

TISUCO = Tidewater Supply Co., which evidently was a distributor in Virginia.

Thanks Steve, you are the best at digging up info.
I bought this handle and a hatchet handle as a pair off ebay. The eye of the hammer is the same shape as the haft so it didn't require a lot of wood removal to get a good fit. When I originally saw the pair I wanted the hatchet handle but had no need for the hammer at the time. Later that afternoon I needed the hammer handle so I hit buy now.

Thanks JB. I like this rounding hammer too. I see a lot of people metal wedge hammers but not axes. I'm not a metal wedge fan on axes either so I'll leave it as is.

How did you remove the rust and leave the patina so nice???

I agree with the others. That's a thing of beauty right there. Nicely done and a great find.

Thanks cots, in the first picture you can see the black under the rust. I didn't expect it to have such a nice finish after I removed the rust. I'm tickled with it. Found it at an outdoor flea market on a table piled up with tools, he had an old council #10 brush axe for 8 bucks, had to have it, a ten was my smallest bill so I dug around and saw this hammer, that ten sealed the deal for the pair. It was a good day.

Picked up this hatchet head for 5 bucks and handle for 6. It's unmarked but steel seems decent. Handle is 14 inches and has nice grain. This makes the 4th stricking tool I've hung this year and I'm getting a lot better and more confident. I gave it a nice edge and sanded the handle and rubbed down with boiled linseed oil.

Happy to add I chopped down some love and dead hickory less than 4in on my place tonight and it did great. Area needs a lot of thinning. 5v
